21 Search Steps 1. Identify the primary concepts in your search question 2. Choose the appropriate database(s) for your topic 6. Apply appropriate limits, browse retrieval and revise search strategy as necessary 3. Determine if you will be using controlled vocabulary terms, keywords or both 5. Use Boolean operators to combine separate concepts into a single set 4. Search the main concepts in your search separately

23 Step 2: Choose Appropriate Databases Think back to your question It should drive all of your searching choices What type of information do I need? What subjects does my topic cover? The library provides a large number of resources, each covers a discrete amount of information The library has provided lists of resources for each college under the E-resources list

24 Library Home Page: E-resources will provide links to other resources Select Ovid on the main page resources

25 Choose appropriate databases to search The I icons will give you information about the database Will it have the information I need? Tip: Search databases individually to make use of embedded tools

26 Step 4: Search Major Concepts Separately Enter each concept into the search box and search one-by-one. Ovid databases will attempt to map these terms to controlled vocabulary terms (MeSH headings). Presence of MeSH headings, and information in the scope note will help you decide if you should use these terms or keyword searching.

28 Ovid will present a list of possible terms based on your search Click on the term to view the concepts place in the MeSH Tree Scope notes provide additional information on the term in question

29 The Mesh Tree will highlight additional terms that are more broad or narrow than the original term Select a term and continue at the top to proceed Entry term will be highlighted in blue Tip: This is a good way to discover alternative terms if your search is not going well

30 Subheading page will present additional qualifiers that can be added to the term Select any terms of interest and click continue to proceed

31 Searcher will be brought back to the original screen with a new line in their search history Repeat process for subsequent concepts Begin entering the next term if necessary

33 Step 6: Limiting and Assessing Results Limits based on article check tags useful for adding a final bit of selection. Some limits are: Language type Publication type Age group Assessing results allows you to make final changes to the search strategy as needed.

34 Quick limits are available in the light blue box. Just Select the limits of interest and click search to add them Tip: We generally apply English and Humans to most searches to limit results Additional limits leads to a much larger list of possible limits

36 Use the Results Manager in Ovid to handle any kind of output for citations Click HSC Full Text Options If electronic full text is not available to the journal, please check the library s online catalog which reflects print holdings

37 Post-Search Concerns Once you have completed a successful search you will face new concerns Saving your search and/or search results Ovid allows users to save their search histories the search results to yourself Gathering the Full text for any article of interest Online full text may be found using the E-journals system

38 Setting Up an Ovid Personal Account Personal accounts are free Allows users to save full searches and run or manipulate them again later Allow users to set up AutoAlert saved search, which will run automatically and results to user Allow users to set up online project spaces within Ovid

39 Words of Encouragement Searching is a process If you are not finding what you need think back to the search steps diagram The best way to learn how to search is to just start searching Don t be intimidated by controlled vocabulary, Ovid provides tools to help you with their use Most importantly: You are not alone, librarians are here to help you!
