Introduction 1 Overview The GrandVIEW Element Management System provides detailed management for the: BitStorm 1900 IP DSLAM BitStorm 2400 IP DSLAM BitStorm 2600 IP DSLAM GranDSLAM 4200 ATM Stackable DSLAM GranDSLAM 4200 IP Stackable DSLAM BitStorm 4800 IP DSLAM GranDSLAM 8600 and 8800 Series DSLAMs and their line cards and endpoints, whether managed by a Management Control Processor (MCP) or Shelf Concentration and Processing (SCP) card. GrandVIEW EMS is a distributed application. The primary user interface runs on the client side. The client processes can be started and stopped on demand A2-GB22-10 November

1. Introduction Application Server and Mediation Agent Before you can run GrandVIEW EMS your system must have a running Application Server and Mediation Agent. Except in distributed installations, starting Application Server starts both. Application Server. The application server runs continuously in the background and provides connectivity between all components. It also can act as the Mediation Agent. Mediation Agent. This application runs continuously. It handles all communications between GrandVIEW EMS and managed objects, receives and translates SNMP traps, and converts traps into events. The Application Server is normally implemented so it runs in the background, even when you log out. See the GrandVIEW EMS Installation Instructions and the Redcell Product Suite User s Guide for information about installing and configuring these required server processes (called services on Windows, and daemons on Solaris). If you have not installed application server as a service, start one from the application s Windows Start menu entry, or from a command line (startappserver). Mediation Agents The Mediation Agent is essential for normal use; if one is not running, administrative changes can still be made to the system, but no traps or other communication will be processed by GrandVIEW EMS. By default, the Application Server acts as a Mediation Agent. It is therefore not recommended that you initiate a separate Mediation Agent on the same computer that the Application Server is running on. If you intend to run a Mediation Agent independent of the Application Server, either on the same or a different computer, you must modify the Oware Application Server startup properties file. Procedure To prepare for running a separate Mediation Agent: 1. Open the following file with a text editor: <dorado>/owareapps/grandview/lib/owappserverstartup.properties (where <dorado> is the name you have used for the GrandVIEW EMS installation. The default name is dorado.) 2. Delete the last three lines of text: append.oware.server.startup.class=,\ com.dorado.core.mediation.snmp.owsnmpsrtraplistenermbean,\ com.dorado.core.mediation.snmp.owsnmpsrinformlistenermbean 3. Save the file. 1-2 November A2-GB22-10

1. Introduction Starting GrandVIEW EMS Once the Application Server and Mediation Agent are initialized, start GrandVIEW EMS. On Solaris, log in as the EMS user. Start GrandVIEW EMS by typing redcell at a console window command line. On Windows, start GrandVIEW EMS from the Windows Start menu: 7890-A2-GB22-10 November

Device Discovery 4 Overview Discovery is how GrandVIEW EMS identifies network elements. Once discovery identifies a network element, you can create equipment objects, so that GrandVIEW EMS can communicate with the element. Physical discovery represents the device and all of its sub-components including modules, ports and interfaces. You can discover devices interactively, through the Discovery Wizard, or you can can set it up in advance and schedule it for automatic execution, through the Discovery Scheduler. Discovery Wizard The Discovery Wizard simplifies the process of network element discovery, making it a step-by-step process. Select File > Open > Network Services > Inventory > Equipment Discovery Wizard or click on Equipment Discovery Wizard in the Navigation Pane to launch the wizard. Then go through the following steps: 1. IP Discovery Parameters 2. Discovery Results 3. Edit Results 4. Additional Authentication Information 5. Discovery Options 6. Network Inventory Update 7890-A2-GB22-10 November

4. Device Discovery IP Discovery Parameters In this step, specify address ranges to include or exclude, the authentication to use, and the ports to query. Figure 4-1. Equipment Discovery Wizard Enter Address Range Fill out the fields in this panel as follows: 1. Select an address type from the drop-down list. The available types are: IP Range or Address (From To , or ) Subnet (Net Mask ) CIDR Address (Net / 24) 4-2 November A2-GB22-10

4. Device Discovery 2. Enter information appropriate to the address type in the available fields. The application sends each address in this range an ICMP Echo command. If it receives a response, it lists the address as valid. Check any of the following options: Resolve? Resolves the host names (via DNS) for the selected range. SNMP Only? Restricts discovery to SNMP devices. When you enable SNMP checking, any address that responds to an ICMP Echo is sent an SNMP get command. If you check this option, only addresses with an SNMP agent return. Exclude? Excludes the selected range from the discovery process. 3. Click Add to add the address range and specifications to the processing queue, or Remove to delete a previously created range you selected. 4. Select the SNMP credential(s) for this discovery, and move the selected authorization objects from the Available side of the credentials list to the Selected (Listed in Order) side with the arrows. You can also change the order in which these credentials are tried once they are in the Selected side of the table by using the arrows at the bottom of that side. If you do not have any authorization objects, click the New button at the bottom of the Available table, and create one. See SNMP Authentication below, or consult the Redcell Common Services Administration Guide for details. You must have an SNMP credential to do discovery. You can also edit selected credentials by clicking the Edit button. 5. Enter any additional range specifications you may need. When you are done, click Next to enter Discovery Results or Back to return to the Enter Filters step A2-GB22-10 November

4. Device Discovery SNMP Authentication If you want to use discovery and deeper discovery options offered by installed device drivers, you typically must add at least an SNMP authentication object. First, click Add, then click New, and select SNMP. The subsequent dialog (Figure 4-2) specifies an object ID, SNMP version, Read Community string, and Write Community string. Figure 4-2. SNMP Authentication Object If you click the Equipment item in the navigation pane, the application opens a dialog where you can select equipment related to the authentication, and the User Groups navigation item lets you specify those who can use this authentication. For SNMP discovery of the SysObjectID, which is the basis of device driver functionality, you must have an SNMP authentication object. NOTE: If you do add an authentication object to this list, use File > Save to store it in the database. You can also enter new and edit existing authentication objects in the Authentication Manager. Access this manager through Settings > Permissions > Authentication Manager. 4-4 November A2-GB22-10

4. Device Discovery Discovery Results The Equipment Discovery Wizard provides a status message at the bottom of the window to indicate which address it is currently checking, which addresses have been processed, what network elements have been discovered, and when discovery is complete. Figure 4-3. Equipment Discovery Wizard Discovery Results You can elect to Save the results with the left-most checkbox, and can view the IP Address, HostName, SysName, Vendor, and SysDescr columns in the table of discovered entities. Only saved results appear in the next steps.
