1 DELL EMC ISILON CONFIGURATION AS AN ARCHIVE TARGET FOR VERITAS ENTERPRISE VAULT Using a Dell EMC Isilon scale-out NAS cluster to store WORM and Non-WORM Veritas Enterprise Vault (EV) archive content requires minimal configuration settings to implement the solution. This configuration guide describes the basic steps needed to configure Isilon as an archive target for EV, as the Vault Store Partitions, and the related configuration settings. To summarize the process, simply join the Isilon cluster to the Active Directory (AD) domain used by the EV servers for authentication of the Vault Service account, create a directory and SMB share on the cluster for the Vault Store Partitions with the appropriate permissions for the Vault Service account, and then create sub-directories for each Vault Store Partition. When Isilon SmartLock is needed to enable hardware WORM retention for some or all of the archive content, configure the directory or parent directory on Isilon as a SmartLock Domain before configuring it as a Vault Store Partition in EV. If any portion of the WORM archive will require infinite retention, set the Default Retention to Forever on the SmartLock Domain. This will enable EV to correctly set infinite retention when specifically by Retention Categories and Policies using Isilon specific integrations in EV. It is generally best to not configure the remaining SmartLock Domain setting such as the Minimum and Maximum Retention, and Autocommit settings to ensure the file retention periods on the Isilon cluster are aligned with those set by EV. If compliance is needed, simply enable the Compliance option on the SmartLock Domain as well. The Compliance option is available on Isilon clusters in Compliance mode, which is enabled before the cluster is created, and that have the Compliance Clock set. The AD Domain Controllers will facilitate time synchronization between the Isilon cluster and EV servers, though confirm they are synchronized before setting the Compliance Clock, and ensure the same time zone is configured to prevent delays in the removal of expired content. SmartLock can be configured using the web administration interface in OneFS 8.0 and later, so that is the interface used in the below example EV Vault Store deployment on Isilon. 2 Isilon Active Directory Configuration Join the Isilon cluster to the AD domain used by the EV servers for authentication of the Vault Service account. Isilon Directory and Share Configuration Create an SMB share for the parent directory to hold the Vault Store Partitions with the appropriate share permissions for the Vault Service account; the parent directory can be created either before or during the SMB share creation process. 3 Modify the parent directory with the appropriate permissions for the Vault Service account. If the directory was created before the SMB share, confirm the directory still has the appropriate permissions; some permission changes may be applied during the SMB share creation process. From an EV server while logged in as the Vault Service account, browse to the share directory and adjust the directory permissions as needed to ensure the Vault Service account permissions are set to be inherited by sub-directories. Then create sub-directories for each Vault Store Partition and confirm the appropriate permissions were inherited. 3 Dell EMC Isilon Configuration as an Archive Target for Veritas Enterprise Vault

4 Isilon SmartLock (WORM) Configuration Configure each Vault Store Partition directory or the parent directory as a SmartLock Domain before it is configured and used in EV. The below uses a parent directory and assumes infinite retention will be needed for some portion of the archive, so the Default Retention on the SmartLock Domain is set to Forever. Veritas Enterprise Vault Configuration During the creation of a new Vault Store Partition in EV, select Isilon as the Storage Type and enter the UNC path in the Location field for the Vault Store Partition share and directory on Isilon. 4 Dell EMC Isilon Configuration as an Archive Target for Veritas Enterprise Vault

5 If SmartLock retention is needed, also select the option Device stores data in WORM mode. If WORM mode is specified, the new Vault Store Partition wizard will default to the trigger file option when it asks the question, How do you want to check whether items have been secured? 5 Dell EMC Isilon Configuration as an Archive Target for Veritas Enterprise Vault

6 This option enables EV to determine which files have a good backup based on the trigger file information and therefore which safety copies it can delete. The archive bit cannot be utilized since SmartLock will not allow changes to be made to even to file attributes. Ensure the backup application for the environment is configured to create a new trigger file at the root of the Vault Store Partition after each successful backup. 7 Summary With the basic steps above, we were able to configure Isilon to be Vault Store Partitions in EV to store both WORM and Non-WORM archived content side-by-side on the same Isilon cluster.
