Chapter 1: Introduction 5 Chapter 1: Introduction This document provides information about installing, configuring, and using the Avalanche Enabler (Enabler). This chapter provides the following information: Document Assumptions Document Conventions About the Avalanche Enabler Document Assumptions This document assumes that the reader has the following: Familiarity with the mobile devices to which you are deploying the Enabler. Knowledge of wireless networks and wireless networking protocols. Knowledge of TCP/IP, including IP addressing, subnet masks, routing, BootP/DHCP, WINS, and DNS. Knowledge of Wavelink Avalanche products including Avalanche MC and Avalanche SE. Document Conventions The following section contains information about text formatting conventions in this manual.

6 Wavelink Avalanche Enabler User Guide This document uses the following typographical conventions: Courier New Any time you interact with the physical keyboard or type information into a text box that information appears in the Courier New text style. This text style is also used for any file names or file paths listed in the text. Examples: The default location is C:\Program Files\Adobe\FrameMaker7.1. Press CTRL+ALT+DELETE. Bold Any time this document refers to an option, such as descriptions of different options in a dialog box, that option appears in the Bold text style. This is also used for tab names and menu items. Examples: Click Open from the File Menu. Italics Any time this document refers to another section within the document, that section appears in the Italics text style. This style is also used to refer to the titles of dialog boxes. Example: See Components of Avalanche MC on page 15 for more information. The Infrastructure Profiles dialog box appears. About the Avalanche Enabler The Enabler is an application that is installed on mobile devices. The primary function of the Enabler is to provide communication with the Mobile Device Server. The Mobile Device Server is server software that allows communication between the mobile device and the Avalanche Console.

Chapter 1: Introduction 7 NOTE The term Avalanche Console applies to both Avalanche MC and Avalanche SE. For brevity and clarity, the document will simply reference Avalanche Console for both sets of software. Mobile devices with a properly functioning Enabler are referred to as Avalanche clients. The Enabler can communicate with the Mobile Device Server via serial connection or RF connection to the system that hosts the Mobile Device Server. Communication allows the Avalanche client to download configurations and configuration changes from the Mobile Device Server. Because it is designed to allow administrators to configure mobile devices, the Enabler can take over a number of functions on the mobile device. These functions include: Control of the radio card, which allows you to configure the radio card (IEEE and WEP) settings of the mobile device from the Avalanche Console or at the mobile device through the Enabler GUI. Control of IP networking, which allows you to configure the IP settings of the mobile device from the Avalanche Console or at the mobile device through the Enabler GUI. You can also use the Enabler to perform the following tasks: Lock down the mobile device to prevent users from accessing other installed components. (This feature is only available for Windows CEbased Enablers.) Create shortcuts in the Enabler GUI to other applications on the mobile device. View communication between the Enabler and the Mobile Device Server, including software and configuration downloads. View messages sent by an administrator from the Avalanche Console to the mobile device. Launch applications that have been deployed to the mobile device through the Avalanche Console.

8 Wavelink Avalanche Enabler User Guide Installation Installation of the Enabler to a mobile device is facilitated over a Microsoft ActiveSync connection between a PC that is running the Enabler installation utility and the mobile device. It is also facilitated through the Enabler package installed in the Avalanche Console. Cold Boot Recovery The Enabler uses Flash memory to ensure that the Enabler survives a cold boot. During normal device operation, the Enabler is loaded into RAM. A copy of the Enabler is stored in the Flash memory of the mobile device. Wavelink works within the constraints of the mobile device to determine the best method to restore the Enabler to the mobile device from the Flash memory storage location in the event of a cold boot. Interfacing with Mobile Devices The Avalanche Enabler interfaces with the following components of a mobile device: The file system The radio card The registry This section describes how the Avalanche Enabler interfaces with each of these components. Interfacing with the File System The Enabler requires about 1 MB of space on the mobile device and additional space on the Flash drive to provide for cold boot recovery. Since part of the Enabler s design provides for the download of configuration files and applications from a Mobile Device Server, the Enabler may write other files to volatile and non volatile memory. For example, the Enabler allows users to download and install the Wavelink Telnet Client over the network connection.

Chapter 1: Introduction 9 Interfacing with the Registry The Enabler uses the mobile device registry to obtain and configure the IP settings of the radio card on the mobile device. Software packages that are installed through the Enabler may also add registry entries to the mobile device. Interfacing with the Radio Card The Enabler is designed to control and configure the radio (802.11) card on the mobile device. The Enabler interface allows administrators and/or users to configure the various components of the radio card on the mobile device, including the SSID and WEP settings.

Chapter 3: Using the Avalanche Enabler 25 Chapter 3: Using the Avalanche Enabler The Enabler contains two primary components: the Enabler GUI interface and the Avalanche Monitor. The Enabler interface allows you to interact with and configure the Enabler. The Monitor is the component of the Enabler that listens for communication requests from the Mobile Device Server. By default, the Monitor runs in the background (transparent to the user) on the mobile device. You can, however, stop the Monitor from launching when the mobile device boots or configure it to terminate whenever the Enabler is terminated on the mobile device. If the Monitor is not active on the mobile device, then the mobile device will not be able to receive communications from Avalanche Console and will not be able to receive any sort of automatic updates. When the Monitor receives an update request from the Avalanche Console, it initiates the process that allows the update to be downloaded to the mobile device. The Monitor is also responsible for keeping track of periodic updates. When a periodic update is due, the Monitor initiates the process whereby the Enabler launches and queries the Mobile Device Server for available updates. This chapter provides the following information: Licensing Managing the Enabler Configuring the Enabler from the Mobile Device Managing Network and Wireless settings Selecting the Primary Adapter Assigning Profiles to Adapters Managing Profiles Viewing Enabler Status Reviewing Information in the Adapter Info Dialog Box

26 Wavelink Avalanche Enabler User Guide Licensing The Enabler does not require a license to function on the mobile device. You can install and use the Avalanche Enabler without obtaining a license. However, each mobile device that reports to a Mobile Device Server requires a license. When you select this option, the Enabler manages all network settings. If you disable this option, the settings are managed by the third party software associated with network management.

Chapter 3: Using the Avalanche Enabler 35 Manage Wireless Settings. When you select this option, the Enabler manages the wireless settings. If you disable this option, the settings are managed by the third party software associated with wireless management. For most installations, these options are enabled by default. This is dependent on the manufacturer. The Manage Wireless Settings and Manage Network Settings options in the Adapters tab dictate global network and wireless settings for the Enabler. When these global settings are enabled, the Enabler maintains control of network settings or wireless settings or both. When downloading a profile that is configured to manage network and wireless settings using ActiveSync or the Avalanche Console, the Enabler will not apply the network and wireless settings to the adapter unless the global Manage Wireless Settings and Manage Network Settings options are enabled. Until these options are enabled, the network and wireless settings are controlled by the third party software associated with these settings. To enable the network and wireless settings: 1 From the File menu, select Settings. 2 Enter a password in the Input Settings Password dialog box. 3 Select the Adapters tab.

Chapter 6: Managing Clients through the Avalanche Console 81 Chapter 6: Managing Clients through the Avalanche Console This section provides information about using the Avalanche Console to manage mobile devices, including: Updating Clients Setting the Terminal ID Controlling the Mobile Device Device Statistics Configuring Mobile Device Properties Managing Avalanche Software Packages NOTE For more information about the Avalanche MC Console or Avalanche SE Console, refer to the specific user guide for your product. Updating Clients Updates are the methods that the Avalanche Console uses to download new information to Avalanche clients (mobile devices with a functioning Enabler). The type of information that is downloaded to a client during an update might include a configuration change, a new application, or instructions to delete an existing application. Updates are configured at the Avalanche Console. The configuration changes are then pushed down to the Mobile Device Server. Communication occurs between mobile devices and the Mobile Device Server, at which point a mobile device downloads the update from the server if the update is required. Update Media The Avalanche Console can download updates to clients using one of the following physical mediums:

82 Wavelink Avalanche Enabler User Guide Serial. The Avalanche Console can download updates to a client via a serial connection between the Mobile Device Server and the mobile device. RF. The Avalanche Console can download updates to a client via TCP/IP over a mobile device s RF (IEEE b) connection. The console must have a valid IP route to the mobile device and vice versa. The Avalanche Console does not support USB connections to mobile devices. Types of Updates Avalanche updates can be divided into three categories: Scheduled. A scheduled update occurs when the Avalanche Console is configured to contact the mobile device at a specific time and send any available updates. Client side. A client side update occurs when a user at the mobile device invokes a command that forces the Enabler to contact the Mobile Device Server and request any available updates. Avalanche side. An Avalanche side update occurs when an administrator at the console forces the Mobile Device Server to contact a specific mobile device. If the Avalanche enabled mobile device is available, it will download any available updates from the Mobile Device Server. This section provides the following information: Update Methods Preparing for Serial Updates Preparing for RF Updates Update Methods There are three ways to update clients: Single Device Updates Group Updates Scheduled Updates

Chapter 6: Managing Clients through the Avalanche Console 83 Single Device Updates You can update a single device from the Avalanche Console. You can force an update to take place or you can allow the device user to perform the update when they are ready. 91 Chapter 6: Managing Clients through the Avalanche Console 89 Figure 6-5. Defined Scheduled Updates If you are using Avalanche SE, the Mobile Device Server is updated with the changes. If you are using Avalanche MC, you must deploy the changes to the server. Preparing for Serial Updates You can configure Mobile Device Servers to automatically listen for mobile devices using the COM ports on the remote system. Only one application on a host system can maintain ownership of a COM port. If the Mobile Device Server controls the COM ports on the host system, then no other application will be able to use them. Likewise, if another application on the host system (for example, Microsoft ActiveSync) has control of the COM ports, then the Mobile Device Server will not be able to use them. Serial connections are required to implement Mobile Device and Server Authentication. Serial settings are configured in the Mobile Device Server Profile. Once you configure the connections and update the Mobile Device Server, the server will update your mobile devices according to the settings. To establish COM port settings: 1 From the Mobile Device Server Profiles List, select the profile you want to configure. 2 Click Edit. 3 Click the Device Connections tab.

90 Wavelink Avalanche Enabler User Guide 4 In the Serial Communication Settings (RS232) section, configure the serial port options. Select the Do not reserve serial ports for device management if you do not need serial ports to manage your mobile devices. Select Reserve COM1 and COM2 to reserve those two ports for Mobile Device communication on the Servers. Select Reserve a custom defined list of ports and click Add to specify which ports you want to use to manage your mobile devices. 5 Save your changes. If you are using Avalanche SE, the Mobile Device Server is updated with the changes. If you are using Avalanche MC, you must deploy the changes to the server. Preparing Avalanche Console for Serial Updates In addition to configuring the Mobile Device Server for serial updates, you must also set the Enabler to allow serial updates. You can configure the Enabler for serial updates on the mobile device or you can use the configuration utility. The setting is located in the Connections tab. NOTE You can not force an update over the serial connection from the Avalanche Console. You must initiate the update from the device. Preparing for RF Updates Network (RF) updates are the preferred (default) method for updating the mobile device. This section provides a list of guidelines to ensure communication between the mobile device and the Mobile Device Server: Ensure that the Mobile Device Server and the mobile device have a valid IP address. Ensure that the mobile device is configured with the correct IP address of the Mobile Device Server. Ensure that the mobile device is configured with the correct wireless network parameters (ESSID, encryption method, and encryption keys).

Chapter 6: Managing Clients through the Avalanche Console 91 Ensure that any firewall service between the mobile device and the Mobile Device Server passes Avalanche traffic. The Avalanche Console communicates on TCP/UDP port If the mobile device and the Mobile Device Server are on separate IP networks, ensure that each has a valid IP route to the other. Setting the Terminal ID The Mobile Device Server assigns each device a terminal ID the first time that the device communicates with Mobile Device Server. The number the Mobile Device Server selects is the lowest number available in a range of configured numbers. Alternately, you can use C style format to configure your own specific terminal ID. The following information is available when configuring the terminal id: Terminal ID lower bound. Specify the lowest terminal ID that the Mobile Device Server will assign a mobile device. Terminal ID upper bound. Specify the highest terminal ID that the Mobile Device Server will assign a mobile device. Generation Template. Use a C style format to allow the Mobile Device Server to assign alphanumeric IDs. Examples: Seattle %d (generates IDs such as Seattle 4) Seattle %05d (generates IDs such as Seattle 00004) Terminal ID settings are configured in the Mobile Device Server Profile. Once you configure the connections and update the Mobile Device Server, the server will update your mobile devices according to the settings. Device Statistics The Enabler collects various device statistics and writes them to a file for later upload to the Mobile Device Server. The following _DEVPROP.PRF

94 Wavelink Avalanche Enabler User Guide properties have been defined to help configure the frequency of gathering and reporting statistics to the Mobile Device Server: Reporting.Stats.Enabled 0-Disable, 1-Enable Default-1 Reporting.Stats.GatherInterval 0-n, Expressed in minutes Default-10 min. Reporting.Stats.ReportInterval 0-n, Expressed in hours Default-24 hours Reporting.Stats.ReportFileSize 0-n, Expressed in KB units Default-512 KB Reporting.MinimumLinkSpeed Expressed in KB/sec. Default-188 KB/s Enabled is if the device statistics will be reported. GatherInterval is how often to take a snapshot of the statistics. ReportInterval is how often to have the file uploaded to the Mobile Device Server for reporting. If GatherInterval or ReportFileSize is set to 0, this has the effect of setting Enabled to 0. MinimumLinkSpeed is used to limit the upload to connections that meet the specified link speed only. ReportFileSize is used to limit the size of the statistics file on the device. Once this threshold is reached, the oldest records will be deleted to make room for new records to be added. You can view the values for the preceding properties under Reporting in the Properties tab of the Mobile Device Details dialog box. See Configuring Mobile Device Properties on page 95 for related information. The Enabler will also inventory all installed software packages and (for WindowsCE) all.exe files on the device. Since this can be a time consuming operation, the inventory collection is done in the background. Unlike device statistics, the frequency is not configurable. Every 24 hours a new software inventory file is created. The following _DEVPROP.PRF properties are used to configure inventory collection: Reporting.Software.Enabled 0-Disable, 1-Enable Default-1 Reporting.MinimumLinkSpeed Expressed in KB/sec. Default-188 KB/s

Chapter 6: Managing Clients through the Avalanche Console 95 Configuring Mobile Device Properties Mobile device properties consist of pre defined and user defined properties. User defined properties can be associated with individual mobile devices or with mobile device groups. Pre defined properties are device specific and dependent on the version of the Enabler running on the mobile device. Properties can be used for selection criteria in addition to the selection variables. From the Properties tab in the Mobile Device Details dialog box, you can perform the following tasks: Viewing Properties Creating User Defined Properties Creating Device Side Properties Editing Properties Deleting Properties Viewing Properties You can view the properties associated with a specific mobile device. To view the properties: 1 From the Mobile Device Inventory tab, right click the device you want to view and click Mobile Device Details. 2 Click the Properties tab. The columns that appear in this dialog box are as follows: Name Value Pending Value Icon The name of the property. The value of the property. Indicates whether the property needs to be updated on the mobile device. If it needs to be updated, this column will display the pending value in italics. Indicates whether the property is static, snapshot, or configurable data.

96 Wavelink Avalanche Enabler User Guide Understanding Wireless Properties Wireless properties are properties that the device reports and are then sent to the Enterprise Server. Any property with a wles prefix is considered a wireless property and will be saved to the database. Understanding Real-Time Properties The Avalanche Console gathers real time properties from the mobile devices it contacts. These statistics are reported to the Console every five minutes. They are not saved to the Mobile Device Server. Creating User-Defined Properties From the Avalanche Console, you can create user defined properties on the mobile devices. These properties can then be used to build selection criteria for software updates. You can add user defined properties to individual mobile devices or to mobile device groups. When you add a property to a group, it is added to all mobile devices that are members of the group. Once you create a custom property, you can then use that property in the Mobile Device Inventory tab. NOTE Like the pre defined properties, user defined properties appear as selection variables in the Selection Criteria Builder. To create user-defined properties: 1 From the Mobile Device Inventory tab, right click the device you want to view and click Mobile Device Details. 2 Click the Properties tab. 3 Click Add Property. 4 From the drop down list, select what type of property you want to add. 5 Type the name and the value of the property in the Property Name and Property Value text boxes. 6 Click OK.

Chapter 6: Managing Clients through the Avalanche Console 97 The property is added to the list in the Properties tab under the chosen heading and the client will receive it upon the next update. Creating Device-Side Properties You have the ability to create property files on the mobile device and then use those files to collect device specific information and display this information in the Properties tab. A properties file is a plain text file with an arbitrary or generic name followed by the.prf extension. The plain text file contains key value pairs that represent properties. The Enabler reads the key value pairs and transfers them to the console as properties for the mobile device. These properties are displayed in the Properties tab of the Mobile Device Details dialog box. A properties file must: Have a unique name Have a.prf extension Contain a vendor entry Contain only one unique key value pair per line Mark supplemental, inconsequential text with the appropriate comment delimiters The Avalanche Console uses the vendor name to organize user defined properties. The Properties tab in the Mobile Device Details dialog box displays the device side properties that it has collected from the mobile device. Each property that displays is prefaced with the vendor name that is specified in the properties file from which the console obtained the property. A period (.) separates the vendor name and the property. For more information about creating device side properties, please contact Wavelink Customer Service. For contact information, refer to Appendix A: Wavelink Contact Information on page 137. Editing Properties Some of the pre defined properties (and all of the user defined properties) support editing of values. When you change the value of a property, the new value is downloaded to the mobile device at the next update.

98 Wavelink Avalanche Enabler User Guide User defined properties can be edited either for a specific mobile device or for a group of devices using the group property editor. To edit a property for a mobile device: 1 From the Mobile Device Inventory tab, right click the device you want to view and click Mobile Device Details. 2 Click the Properties tab. 3 Select the property that you want to edit. If the property is editable, the Edit Property button becomes active. 4 Click Edit Property and type the new value for the property. 5 Click OK. The new value downloads to the mobile device at the next update. If the device has not yet received an updated property value, the pending value appears in the Pending Value column for the property. Deleting Properties You can delete any configurable mobile device property from the selection criteria builder. To delete a property: 1 From the Mobile Device Inventory tab, right click the device you want to view and click Mobile Device Details. 2 Click the Properties tab. 3 Select the property that you want to delete and click Delete Property. 4 Click OK. The new configuration will download to the mobile device at the next update. The properties will then be removed from the device. Managing Avalanche Software Packages Avalanche software packages are specially bundled applications or files that can be deployed to mobile devices through the Avalanche Console.

Chapter 6: Managing Clients through the Avalanche Console 99 Software packages are divided into the following categories: Control. An internally used package (that is, specific to Avalanche Console). A network profile is an example of a control package. Application. An application that is downloaded and installed on the mobile device and can then be launched and used by users at the mobile device. Support. A package that is downloaded to a mobile device, but is not used. A device driver is an example of a support package. Auto. A package that is downloaded to the client and runs automatically, but does not appear in the mobile device s application list. This section provides the following information: Before You Deploy Deploying Software Packages to Clients Removing Software Packages from Clients Before You Deploy This section provides an overview of the tasks you will need to complete before you can deploy software packages to the mobile devices. The tasks are preformed in the Avalanche Console. For detailed instructions about each step, refer to the online help or the user guide specific to your console. Before you can deploy, perform the following tasks: 1 Create a software profile in the Avalanche Console and install the software package to that profile. 2 Configure and enable the software package. Deploying Software Packages to Clients Software packages or configuration changes to a software package are downloaded to a mobile device during an update.

100 Wavelink Avalanche Enabler User Guide When an Avalanche client is not up to date with the latest configuration for a software package or has not downloaded an available software package, the Mobile Device Inventory indicates that the client needs to be updated. Use one of the following methods to update the Avalanche client and download the software package: Avalanche side update Client side update Scheduled update For information about each type of update, refer to Updating Clients on page 81. When an Avalanche client is up to date, the Mobile Device Inventory lists the client as Updated. When an application type software package is downloaded to the mobile device, a shortcut icon for the application appears in the Programs view of the Enabler. Double click or otherwise select the application in the Programs view to launch the application. NOTE Depending on the configuration of a software package, shortcuts to the application may be created in other locations and appear in other menus on the mobile device. Removing Software Packages from Clients The Avalanche Console will remove software packages from clients through an update. A software package will only be removed from a client during an update if the software package has been orphaned. A software package is orphaned or considered an orphan package if it meets any of the following criteria: The software package has been disabled in the Avalanche Console. The software package has been deleted in Avalanche Console.

Chapter 6: Managing Clients through the Avalanche Console 101 The Avalanche Console to which a client reports has no record of the software package. (For example, if an Avalanche client is migrated to a new console and the client has software packages installed that are not part of the new Avalanche Console configuration.) This section provides the following information: Removing a Software Package from a Single Client Removing Orphan Packages from All Clients Removing a Software Package from a Single Client You can configure the Avalanche Console to remove a software package from a single client.
