7 Virtual Private Server (VPS) Virtual machine as a service by an Internet hosting service running within a bigger server runs its own copy of an operating system (OS) and allocated shared server recourses (hard disk, ram, cpu, bandwidth) Users may have superuser-level access so they can install almost any software that runs on that OS Isolated environment CS Department will create a VPS for each EPL371 student with the following specs and restrictions: centos-7-64bit OS 2GB hard disk 256MB RAM accessed via SSH from internal network workstations No graphical desktop environment installed (e.g. VNC Server)

8 Linux along side Windows Dual booting Linux with Windows If you install Linux on a system that already has Windows, when your system powers up, you can choose if which OS you want to use Steps: Download your favorite Linux Distribution (.iso image archive file) Popular Linux Distros

9 Linux along side Windows Burn.iso to a DVD or create a bootable USB using a utility such as Universal USB Installer (BIOS compatible) or Rufus (UEFI compatible) Prepare Windows Machine for Dual-Boot (create a partition of at least 20GB) Disk Management tool (diskmgmt.msc command) 1. Select USB device 2. Browse.iso 3. Create bootable USB

10 Linux along side Windows Windows 8 introduced a new feature called fast startup for quick boot. While it is not mandatory, it would be better to have it disabled The new secure boot feature of Windows 8 (and 10), originally intended for security feature for rootkit viruses, prevents dual booting of Windows with Linux. To dual boot Windows 8 (and 10) with Linux, we must disable secure boot in UEFI Place the USB stick or DVD in the appropriate drive, reboot the machine and instruct the BIOS/UEFI to boot-up from the DVD/USB

It requires you have relatively good technical knowledge Examples: DigitalOcean, Amazon Web Services (partially-ec2, EBS, S3), Linode, OVH, Rackspace, etc.
