2 Introduction In Unix/Linux, the default installation of BusinessObjects XI comes with the MySQL databases for the Central Management Server (CMS). BusinessObjects XI connects to the MySQL CMS database using the native connection, however, in order to use Auditor or report from the MySQL database, an ODBC connection is required. Compiling and installing the UNIX ODBC Driver Manager The ODBC driver manager is the interface between BusinessObjects XI/XI Release 2, and the ODBC driver. The driver manager principally provides the ODBC API so ODBC applications may link with a single shared object and be able to talk to a range of ODBC drivers. For example, an application on Linux links with libodbc.so (the main driver manager shared object) without having to know at link time which ODBC driver it is going to be using. At run time the application provides a connection string which defines the ODBC data source that it wants to connect to, and this in turn defines the ODBC driver which will handle this data source. The driver manager loads the requested ODBC driver (using the dlopen command) and passes all ODBC API calls on to the driver. In this way, an ODBC application can be built and distributed without knowing which ODBC driver it will be using. Unfortunately the ODBC manager provided with BusinessObjects (Located in <BOinstall>/bobje/enterprise115/<OS_Pross>/odbc/lib) does not function correctly, as it seems that it does not include the latest definition for all ODBC drivers. Therefore, there is a need to replace this with a more up to date version. Here are the steps: Download the UnixODBC from The unixodbc source distribution is a gzipped tar file. Uncompress it and then untar the resultant file e.g. gunzip unixodbc tar.gz tar -xvf unixodbc tar Change into the resultant directory and run: mkdir /tmp/unixodbc. /configure --prefix=/tmp/unixodbc --enable-gui=no make make install 3/13/ :21:00 AM Copyright 2008 Business Objects. 3 Note that, by default, the files are installed into /usr/local. As is usual with configure, you can change this location by altering the prefix option to configure (--prefix=/tmp/unixodbc). Once the compilation has finished, change into /tmp/unixodbc and copy the content of the lib folder to the Business Objects odbc lib cp /tmp/unixodbc/lib/* <path BO install>/bobje/enterprise115/<os_proc>/odbc/lib Where <path BO install> is the path to your BusinessObjects installation folder and <OS_Proc> is the folder for you Unix/Linux distr : linux_x86, solaris_sparc, aix_rs6000 or hpux_pa Change into <path BO install>/bobje/enterprise115/<os_proc>/odbc/lib and make sure that all file have been copied and that the user can execute them. Installing the MySQL connector/odbc drivers The Connector/ODBC drivers can be installed using two different methods: A binary installation: this is the easiest and most straightforward method of installation. Binary installation packages can be downloaded for the adequate OS. The source installation: this method should only be necessary on platforms where a binary installation package is not available or in situations where you want to customize or modify the installation process or Connector/ODBC drivers before installation. Download and install the binaries drivers Downloading the binaries The installations binaries are locate on the following page: Installing the binaries Once the tarball distribution (tar.gz) is downloaded, this can be installed as follow: Use the gunzip mysql-connect-odbc-xxxx.tar.gz Then >> tar xvf mysql-connector-odbc-xxxx.tar This will uncompress the tarball distribution Change directory to the mysql-connector-odbc-xxxx folder 3/13/ :21:00 AM Copyright 2008 Business Objects. 4 In the screenshot below the folder has been renamed mysql-odbc. Configuring the ODBC connector for Business Objects Auditor Configuring the odbc.ini file Note that Auditor should be activated using the cmssetup.sh (refer to the installation guide for UNIX/linux). Edit the odbc.ini located in the <BusinessObjects installation folder>/bobje/. Add a data source entry for auditor for example: boe115_audit. Add the connections parameters: [boe115_audit] Driver=<installation folder for mysql connector>/lib/libmyodbc3_r.so Description=auditor SERVER=<server where the MySQL database is located> (localhost) PORT=3306 USER=<username> Password=<password> Database=boe115_audit (database name) OPTION=3 SOCKET= Trace=off 3/13/ :21:00 AM Copyright 2008 Business Objects. 6 Reporting using the odbc connection (refresh Auditor reports) When installing Auditor the activity universe should be located on the CMS database: Ensure that the universe connection uses the right data source name (boe115_audit), and the user name and password are correct. 3/13/ :21:00 AM Copyright 2008 Business Objects.
