1 Installing Lemur on Mac OS X and CSE Systems Everything all at once For those of you who just want to copy and paste, here is the quick and dirty. # Config for black.cse.msu.edu # Note that you need to be SSH'd in with -X for X11 export JAVA_HOME=/soft/linux/jdk16 export INSTALL_DIR=/user/cse484/Projects/YOUR_PID/install # Config for Mac OS X users export JAVA_HOME=/System/Library/Frameworks/JavaVM.framework/Home export INSTALL_DIR=$HOME/lemur # Download and extract wget tar xvzf lemur-4.12.tar.gz cd lemur-4.12 # Configure./configure --prefix=$install_dir --enable-java --with-javahome=$java_home # Make. Try to build everything as fast as possible, then make sure # we got everything. make -j8 # Fast make -j2 # Less fast make # Anything that got missed # Install make install # Run cd $INSTALL_DIR java -cp share/lemur/lemur.jar -Djava.library.path=lib -jar share/lemur/lemurindex.jar # Voila. Prerequisites Java is installed by default on all Macs. No need to download it. It is also pre-installed on the CSE systems. $ java -version java version "1.6.0_20" $ javac -version javac 1.6.0_20 X11 is required in order to run the GUI tools on the remote Linux systems. For OS X 10.5 and up, as well as Linux users, this is supported via the -X parameter for ssh. For example:
2 ssh -X Windows users can follow the instructions here to install Xming and Putty, but I have no guarantees: Download the Lemur source Download Lemur from SourceForge. This is the same source for both Linux and Mac. $ wget To extract lemur: $ tar xvzf lemur-4.12.tar.gz $ cd lemur-4.12 Configuring and Compiling Lemur We want to build Lemur with Java enabled. For some reason, the Lemur configure command does not look at the $JAVA_HOME environment variable, and you must specify the location of the Java header files with the --with-javahome flag (as shown below). This command will install it into your home directory at ~/lemur, but if this is the CSE system you will want to use --prefix=/user/cse484/projects/yourpid/install instead. Setting $JAVA_HOME # black.cse.msu.edu $ export JAVA_HOME=/soft/linux/jdk16 # Mac OS X users $ export JAVA_HOME=/System/Library/Frameworks/JavaVM.framework/Home # Make sure that the include files can be found $ ls $JAVA_HOME/include... jni.h... Configuring Lemur $./configure --prefix=$home/lemur --enable-java --with-javahome=$java_home Compiling Lemur The -j flag makes it compile files in parallel. This makes the compilation go much faster. You will have to run this command a few times to get everything built, because the way Lemur builds does not necessarily like the parallelism. You will know that it s done when you see a whole bunch of Nothing to be done for all If you run into issues, remove the -j flag and just use make
3 $ make -j4 Go grab a soda. This will still take a few minutes. Installing Lemur $ make install You will see a bunch of errors, and operation not supported, regarding copying files while preserving the permissions. This is not a problem, it s just an issue with the way Lemur expects things to happen. Running one of the GUI tools $ cd $HOME/lemur $ java -cp share/lemur/lemur.jar -Djava.library.path=lib -jar share/lemur/lemurindex.jar What this Means cp specifies the Java classpath, and tells Java where to look for all of the functionality provided by the Lemur library Jarfile. -Djava.library.path=lib tells Java where to look for the Lemur JNI library, liblemur_jni.jnilib. This serves as the interface between the Java and the native C Lemur code. Other Utilities Where are all of the Java GUI files installed? $ basename $HOME/lemur/share/lemur/*.jar IndexUI.jar LemurIndex.jar LemurRet.jar RetUI.jar indri.jar ireval.jar irevalgui.jar jcommon jar jfreechart jar lemur.jar What about RetEval and all of the non-java files? They are all in $HOME/lemur/bin. You can make it very convenient to run all of these files from the command line like so: echo 'export PATH=$PATH:$HOME/lemur/bin' >> ~/.bash_profile And restart your terminal or SSH session. Now you should be able to directly execute the files: $ RetEval...
