3 1. In this lab, we work through a simple demonstration program called UART_Loopback for the MSP430F169. Once properly connected this program will read data from the Tx/Rx pins on the FT232BM. The data is incremented (UART0) or decremented (UART1) and sent back to the FT232BM. Using HyperTerminal you will be able to send data to the FT232BM via USB cable and read back the new values. 1.1 Step One, Organize Your Materials For this laboratory exercise, you will need the following: FT232U169 Evaluation System from SoftBaugh USB cable supplied with FT232U169 Evaluation System SoftBaugh USBP JTAG programmer with USB cable or SoftBaugh FETP JTAG programmer with 25-pin straight-through parallel port extension cable. (USBP, FETP, or equivalent). 14-pin cable supplied with the JTAG programmer. Installed IAR v2 or newer software development tools on a compatible PC. UART loopback sample code FTDI s Virtual COM Drivers Jumper wires, SoftBaugh PWIRE or equivalent 1.2 Step Two, Install Virtual COM Port Drivers 1. Go to 2. Download the Virtual COM Port (VCP) Drivers for your operating system. Note the location where you are downloading the zip file onto your PC. 3. Unzip the driver files onto a blank floppy disk or into an empty file folder. 4. Plug the USB cable into your PC then into the FT232U169 J The found new hardware wizard will appear. Select the option that lets you install from a list or specific location, then select Next. 6. Check the box labeled Include this location in search, then browse the folder that contains the unzipped driver files. Finally select Next. 7. Select OK once you see that the hardware was installed successfully. Page 3 of 6

4 1.3 Step Three, Connecting the JTAG Programmer To program and debug your FT232U169, the JTAG programmer must be connected. These instructions assume you are using a SoftBaugh JTAG programmer, but other equivalent devices may be used. Warning: If you have a new, very fast, or "green" PC, you may have difficulty with equivalent JTAG programmers on any MSP430 target. Obtaining a genuine SoftBaugh JTAG programmer will usually resolve these problems (as of this writing, we haven't seen a case where it hasn't yet!). 8. Connect the JTAG programmer to your PC. Then, connect JTAG programmer 14-pin header to FT232U169:J11 using the 14-pin JTAG cable. 9. For this exercise, the jumper options will be in the following configuration when using USB power supply: Jumper J16, J17, J26.1-2, J9.2-4, J and J Step Four, Connecting the MSP430F169 to FT232BM 10. 5 Figure 1-1 UART1 Connection 1.5 Step Five, Open the UART Loopback Sample Project 11. Download the UART loopback sample project from our website at: Unzip the code samples into an empty file folder on your PC. 13. Open IAR by selecting Start>Programs>IAR System>IAR Embedded Workbench for MSP430>IAR Embedded Workbench. 14. After IAR opens, select File>Open Workspace. 15. Find the UART_Loopback.eww workspace file that you downloaded from the SoftBaugh website. Select Open. Note: if you cannot see this file in the folder you placed it, you may need to extract the file out of the zip file previously downloaded.

6 1.6 Step Six, Make the Project 16. Select Project>Make in the upper taskbar. 17. In the Messages window at the bottom of the screen it should now show zero errors. 1.7 Step Seven, Program the Target 18. To program the target select Project>Debug in the upper taskbar. 1.8 Step Eight, Execute the Code 19. Select Debug>Go to begin executing code. D1 should have now turned on. 1.9 Step Nine, Echo Data 20. Open HyperTerminal by selecting Start>Programs>Accessories>Communications>HyperTerminal. 21. Name your connection. Then select OK. 22. Connect using the COM port that was assigned when you loaded the FTDI Virtual COM drivers. Then select OK. 23. Enter the following settings: Bits per second: 2400 Data bits: 8 Parity: None Stop bits: 1 Flow control: None Then select OK. 24. Try to type a character onto the screen. You should see your character plus or minus one depending on the UART on the MSP430F169 that you have connected to. UART1 will decrement one while UART0 will increment one. minus one. For example if you have the FT232BM connected to UART1 and you type a B you should see an A in the HyperTerminal Window. For each character sent D1 will toggle. Page 6 of 6
