MagicSoft Version 3.02 Chapter 1 Introduction MagicSoft is designed to be intuitive and easy to navigate. You ll never find yourself buried deep in a menu without quick access to the screens and tools you need most. Navigation through menus can be done three ways: Many buttons are clickable from the screen, You can scroll left/right and up/down with gestures similar to a tablet or phone, Arrow keys at the bottom of the controller are used for navigation, as well. All brewing screens include a navigation map at the bottom of the screen. A blue dot will always be shown on the map representing your current location. There are 4 columns home, recipe checklist, mash and boil. Navigating left/right moves you through the columns. Scrolling up/down moves you through the column where you are currently located. You have three options from the Main Menu. 1. Brew If you don t want to load a recipe you can simply choose to start brewing (you can still load a recipe after you ve entered a brewing session, 2. Recipes Select this option to choose a recipe to brew or write a new recipe, 3. Settings Select this option to configure your Brew Magic system.
Chapter 2 Recipes When you select Recipes from the Main Menu you ll see the Recipe Book. We have pre loaded three recipes for you. These are read only and cannot be modified. Simply touch a recipe name to highlight it, then press the Load Recipe button. You can add a new recipe by touching any blank line and pressing Load Recipe. Think of each number as a recipe folder which may contain an existing recipe or could be empty. Empty recipe folders are available to be used for new recipes. After loading a recipe you can use the navigation tools explained earlier to view and modify all recipe fields. There are three sections to a Brew Magic recipe: checklist, mash and boil. You can navigate left/right to move from section to section and scroll up/down to view more fields in each category. The navigation map at the bottom of the screen helps you identify your current location in the recipe folder. Navigate to the Home column (or press ESC) when you ve finished building or viewing the recipe. From this page you ll be able to either exit the Recipe Book or brew the recipe. It is possible to load a recipe after a brew session has begun. If you select Brew from the Main Menu you can navigate to the Mash and/or Boil sections and load a recipe. This allows you to brew different recipes for the mash and boil processes. This is useful when brewing back to back batches. You may want to mash one recipe, boil that recipe, and then start another mash while you boil, using a different recipe for your second batch.
Chapter 3 Brewing Once you enter a brew session (by loading a recipe and selecting Brew or by simply choosing Brew from the main menu) you will see this screen: This is the main brewing screen and it gives you access to the most common information and options: At the top left you ll see a status bar. This section describes what the system is currently doing. Several different messages may appear. These messages are described below. o Scroll Down to Start Mash/Boil This message alerts you to the fact that you are not currently in a mash or boil sequence. MagicSoft is waiting for you to do something. You can manually start the pump or enable temperature control but you are not currently doing any of this. The system is waiting for you. o Pumping The pump is on but the heat is not enabled. o Use Burner The pump is on and heat is enabled. MagicSoft suggests you use the gas burner to achieve the target temperature currently set. o Self Regulating The pump is on and heat is enabled. MagicSoft is using the electric heater to maintain your temperature very precisely. You should not be using the gas burner. o Temp Control on Standby The pump is off and heat is disabled even though you ve started the mash sequence. You have manually disabled the pump and heat control. o Sensor error The controller is not receiving a usable signal from your temperature sensor. At the top right you ll see two boxes. One tells you the status of the pump and the other tells you the status of the heating feature. o Pump is off. o Pump is on.
o Heating feature is disabled. o Heating feature is enabled but the heating element is not on. MagicSoft automatically controls the heating element and this icon indicates the temperature is being regulated automatically but the element does not currently need to be turned on. o Heating feature is enabled and the heating element is on. MagicSoft is automatically controlling the element and the current temperature is below setpoint. This section shows the current target temperature and the actual current temperature. The target temperature button will be blue if a recipe is not loaded into the mash section. The blue button indicates you can press it to manually enter a target temperature. If a recipe is loaded, MagicSoft will automatically set the target temperature. A warning message may periodically appear if MagicSoft senses your burner is set too high. An Exit button appears on the bottom right corner. Press it at any time to exit the current brewing session. Scroll down for the Mash, Sparge and Boil initiation screen: This screen allows you to initiate the mash, sparge and boil sequences. If a recipe is loaded into the section you initiate, MagicSoft will control the pump, set target temperatures and prompt you for boil additions at the appropriate time.
If no recipe is loaded into the section you initiate, this screen will simply run the timers for your convenience. You ll manually control the brewing session but the timers will be helpful. Scroll down again for the graph screen: This screen provides a real time graph of temperature. Several features are available to you: It is possible to zoom in and out by touching the numbers on the Y axis. Touching the numbers allows you to enter a new number, thereby changing what is viewed on the graph. Near the bottom left of the screen you ll see current temperature slope. It is scaled for degrees per minute and it helps you regulate the gas burner. If you receive a warning message indicating this, you ll be taken directly to this screen so you can see the temperature slope and adjust your burner accordingly. Near the bottom right of the screen you ll see the current temperature. Navigate right to view the recipe checklist. You can press the button. This allows you to load a recipe into the checklist section (or change the recipe that s loaded). Please note this will only load the recipe into the checklist section. Mash and boil sections remain unchanged. Navigate right again to view the mash section. You can press the button. This allows you to load a recipe into the mash section (or change the recipe that s loaded). Please note this will only load the recipe into the mash section. Recipe checklist and boil sections remain unchanged. Navigate right again to view the boil section. You can press the button. This allows you to load a recipe into the boil section (or change the recipe that s loaded). Please note this will only load the recipe into the boil section. Recipe checklist and mash sections remain unchanged. If you are running a mash or boil sequence, helpful timers will appear above the navigation icons on the main brewing screen. These timers tell you where you are in the mash and/or boil processes by counting down from the starting values. In the case of the mash, the timer counts down how much time remains in the current mash step. In the case of the boil, the timer counts down the remaining boil time.
Chapter 4 Cleaning the Mash Tun The Brew Magic system has been supplied with a basic cleaning recipe. It is saved under recipe 4 Basic Mash Tun Clean and can be loaded into the mash section (see chapter 3). You ll need to manually control the valves but the temperature and circulation time will be set automatically. You can modify this recipe to suit your cleaning preferences and/or add new recipes for alternate cleaning methods. For instance you could leave recipe 4 as is but add your own recipe for a periodic deeper clean.
Chapter 5 Settings and WiFi Connectivity Pressing Settings from the Main Menu will take you to this screen: Choose to operate in either degrees Fahrenheit or degrees Celsius. Choose to receive audible warnings and reminders by enabling the beeper. Scroll down for Communication Settings (these screens are only available if your controller is equipped with an Ethernet card for connecting to a local area network). It is possible to place the Brew Magic controller on your local area network (LAN). If your system is equipped with a WiFi adapter you can do this wirelessly. WiFi adapter configuration:
1. Power up the Brew Magic system 2. Enter IP Address, Subnet Mask and Gateway. a. To determine the correct values to enter, use a computer that s on the network already. i. From the Windows Start menu, choose run or type run into the search box. ii. Type cmd and press enter. iii. Type ipconfig/all and press enter iv. You ll see a box like the one below. v. Use the information to enter the IP address, Subnet Mask and Default Gateway. b. For IP Address, use the first three numbers from the command prompt shown on your PC. For example, the box shown on this page displays IP address This is the IP address of the computer. You would use on your Brew Magic screen but choose a different value for the last field. We recommend trying 99 to start. This would give us a Brew Magic IP address of c. For Subnet Mask, use exactly what is shown on your computer screen. In our example, that would be d. For Default Gateway, use exactly what is shown on your computer screen. In our example, that would be e. The Brew Magic Name field is not important unless you own more than one Brew Magic system. 3. Once the communication settings are entered, unplug the Brew Magic, wait 5 seconds and plug it back in. 4. If your router has a WPS button a. Press the WPS button on the Netgear WiFi Adapter located inside your Brew Magic s electrical control panel. The button can be found beside where the cables enter on the back of the adapter.
b. Press the WPS button on your router within 30 seconds after pressing the button on the WiFi adapter. 5. If your router does not have a WPS button a. Unplug your Brew Magic system. b. Remove the Netgear WiFi Adapter from the electrical control panel. Simply unplug it and leave the Ethernet cable and power cable in the control panel. c. Use the Ethernet cable and USB cable supplied with your system to connect the Netgear WiFi Adatper to a computer that s on your local area network. d. Wait until both the Power and LAN LEDs on the Netgear WiFi Adapter are solid green (no blinking). Open your internet browser and it will automatically take you to the setup page. Follow the instructions on the setup page. e. Disconnect the Netgear WiFi Adapter from your computer and re install it in the Brew Magic electrical control panel. f. Plug in the Brew Magic system and turn it on. 6. Wait up to two minutes for the Brew Magic to be added to your network. Ideally, all three LEDs on the Netgear WiFI Adapter should turn green (it s okay if the WLAN LED is amber) 7. If you have trouble connecting, try changing the last field of the IP address to a new number and repeat step 3 above.
Chapter 6 Exchanging Recipes with a Computer or Mobile Device If the Brew Magic system has been configured on a local area network (see chapter 4), then you can view and exchange recipes with any computer using a web browser. Any PC, Mac or mobile device will be acceptable as long as it is also on the network. This feature will not work over the Internet. Both the Brew Magic and the computer must be registered on the same LAN. Open a web browser and enter the Brew Magic s IP address (see chapter 4) into the URL bar. You ll see this screen appear: Click Index 1. All of the Index pages will contain Brew Magic recipes. Most of them will be blank on a new machine but you ll see the three recipes we provided.
To load a recipe, select Edit Value. A new window will appear: Change the value from 0 to 1 and press OK. The screen will now indicate that particular recipe is loaded. You can choose to load a recipe from any of the four index pages. Once you have a recipe loaded, you can view the recipe by clicking one of the recipe categories, Setup 1, Setup 2, Setup 3, Mash or Boil. Each recipe category contains recipe fields identical to what you see on the Brew Magic s controller screen when building or viewing a recipe. You can choose to build or modify any recipe except the first three. Those are read only. Modify the recipes by clicking Edit Value beside any of the fields you wish to change. Some fields call for a number, some call for text.
Please be aware the recipe has not been saved to the Brew Magic controller immediately after you edit a value. You must save the recipe as a separate step. Look for the area circled below. You must choose this Edit Value field, change the value to 1 and press OK. This saves all your recipe changes to the file stored on the Brew Magic controller. Failing to edit this value to 1 will result in the changes only temporarily appearing in your web browser but they will not be saved to the controller. You can print any of these pages from your web browser if you d like a hard copy.
