ESG s Reference Research content is designed to assist in market segmentation, market sizing, product requirements analysis, and other business planning exercises. This Reference Research brief focuses on 2012 disk storage system capacity trends among enterprise and midmarket organizations and includes analysis of storage capacity by number of, number of production, and vertical industry. Data Overview Data presented in this brief was collected via a survey of 418 IT professionals at enterprise (i.e., 1,000 or more ) and midmarket (i.e., 100 to 999 ) organizations in North America with day-to-day knowledge of or familiarity with their organization s data storage environment and/or strategy. 1 Respondents were asked to provide their organization s total installed capacity associated with disk-based storage systems. This data does not include storage capacity associated with tape and/or optical libraries, or desktop/laptop/mobile devices. Survey respondents total installed disk-based storage system capacity based on organization size is presented in Figure 1. While a more detailed view of installed capacity by number of can be seen in Figure 2 and Table 1, it is typically more useful to analyze storage capacity by an organization s overall number of production, which is provided in Figure 3 and Table 2. Disk-based storage system capacity trends are also shown by industry in Figure 4. Finally, Figure 5 illustrates ongoing storage growth by displaying the percent of organizations that now manage at least 500 TB of capacity, compared to similar 2010 ESG data. Figure 1.
