Chapter 1. Reporting and Graphing Introduction The Tivoli Report and Graph Manager allows you to create reports and graphs from data archived in a database. Most of the reports and graphs work in conjunction with Tivoli Management Solution for Microsoft SQL Performance rules, which populate the Tivoli Performance Database with data archived at regular intervals. The performance rules are a group of rules that are part of both the Tivoli Management Solution for Microsoft SQL and the Tivoli Management Solution for SQL. These rules archive performance data at regular intervals to a database, and must be running to create that data necessary for reporting and graphing. The Tivoli Performance Database is the database that contains the performance data used for reporting and graphing. This database is populated by Tivoli Management Solution for Microsoft SQL Performance rules. The performance database accessed by the reports and graphs is defined by the ODBC system data source name (DSN) RoboMon Performance Reporting. The Tivoli Management Solution for Microsoft SQL installation creates this DSN to reference the performance database on your local computer. If you want to access the performance database on a different computer, you will need to change this DSN by running the ODBC applet of the control panel. The left pane of the Tivoli Report and Graph Manager displays the reports and graphs available in the current view in a hierarchical tree view, similar to the way folders are displayed in Windows Explorer. You can select the view you want at the top of the pane. Each view contains a group of reports and graphs designed for a particular user or group of users. For example, the sysadmin view contains detailed reports and graphs designed for a system administrator. Views are completely customizable. You may create new views, reorganize the contents of a view, and add or remove reports and graphs from a view. To select the report or graph you want, explore the tree by clicking + to expand each branch until you find the report or graph you want. For example, to select the Disk I/O Summary report (found in the Management view), expand Disk, expand IO under Disk, then select Disk I/O Summary Report. After selecting a report or graph, the selection options are displayed in the right pane. These options control the selection of data used to create the report or graph. Make any desired changes to the selections and click Run to display the report or graph. 1

Chapter 2. Views, Reports and Graphs The Sysadmin Views Three views are included with the product, each containing reports and graphs designed for a specific audience of users. The CIO and management views contain summary reports and graphs that would be of interest to management level users. The management view contains the full set of management reports and graphs, and the CIO view contains those reports and graphs that would be of interest to a Chief Information Officer. The sysadmin view contains more detailed reports and graphs that would be of interest to a system administrator. The following kinds of reports and graphs are provided in the sysadmin view: v The detail reports display activity or usage detail by hour of the day within date for the previous day. v The time line graphs display hourly activity or usage data for the current day, for each field, computer, and entity selected. In all cases, the dates, days of the week and times selected may be changed in the report s Dates/Times selection tab or the graph s Dates/Times selection tab. See The Dates/Times Tab on page 4. Also, the sort and summarization grouping of the reports may be changed in the report s Main selection tab. See The Main Selection Tab on page 4. The CIO and Management Views The following kinds of reports and graphs are provided in the CIO and management views: v v v v v The summary reports display an activity or usage summary by hour of the day, but providing no detail for individual days. The data is summarized for the current month, excluding Saturdays and Sundays. The computer bar graphs display a bar for each field and computer selected, containing an activity or usage summary by computer. The data is summarized for the current month, excluding Saturdays and Sundays, and including only the hours between 9:00 AM and 5:00 PM. The entity bar graphs display a bar for each field, computer and entity selected, containing an activity or usage summary by computer and entity. The data is summarized for the current month, excluding Saturdays and Sundays, and including only the hours between 9:00 AM and 5:00 PM. The hourly summary bar graphs display a bar for each field selected, for each of the 24 hours in a day, containing an activity or usage summary across the computers (and entities) selected. The data is summarized for the current month, excluding Saturdays and Sundays. The summary pie graphs display a pie containing a slice for each field selected. The data is summarized across computer (and entity) for the current month, excluding Saturdays and Sundays, and including only the hours between 9:00 AM and 5:00 PM. In all cases, the dates, days of the week and times selected may be changed in the report s Dates/Times selection tab or the graph s Dates/Times selection tab. See 3

The Dates/Times Tab on page 4. Also, the sort and summarization grouping of the reports may be changed in the report s Main selection tab. See The Main Selection Tab on page 4. The Dates/Times Tab The Dates/Times selection tab for reports allows you to specify the following information: The Dates frame allows you to select the date or date range of the report. Choose one of the options listed. For Days back, also enter the number of days to report. For Date, enter the date to report. For Date range, enter the beginning and ending dates to report. The Days of the week frame allows you to select which days of the week are included in the report. Check those days you want in the report. The Times frame allows you to select the times of day you want to report. Either select All times, or select Time range and enter the beginning and ending times of day to report. The Main Selection Tab The main selection tab for reports allows you to specify the following information: The Title contains the title text that is displayed at the top of the report. The Include graph checkbox controls whether or not the report will contain embedded graphs. If checked, at the end of each report grouping, a bar graph is included in the report containing the value of first field of the report for each grouping value. For example, if a report is grouped by computer and hour, at the end of each computer a graph will display a bar for each hour of the day for that computer. The items checked under Fields used define the columns of the report. You may check or uncheck fields in the list to select the columns of the report. Also, you can select a field and click the up or down arrow to the left of the field list to change the order of the columns in the report. The items checked under Groups define how the report is sorted and summarized. You may check or uncheck groups in the list to select the groupings of the report. Also, you can select a group and click the up or down arrow to the left of the group list to change the sort order of the report. The items checked under Computers define which computers are included in the report. The list will include all computers found in the database table associated with this report. You may check or uncheck computers in this list to select the computers to include in the report. Some reports will also display a list of entities, such as Disks, Process names, or Databases. Entity refers to a component of your computer for which there can be many occurrences. Examples of entities are Disk, Process, Service and Database. The items checked in this list define which entities are included in the report. The list will include all entities found in the database table associated with this report. You may check or uncheck entities in this list to select the entities to include in the report. 4 Tivoli Management Solution for Microsoft SQL: Reporting and Graphing

Chapter 4. Viewing Reports The Report Window Printing a Report Refreshing Report Data Exporting a Report Reports are displayed in a separate report window. After the report window is displayed, you may go back to the Report and Graph Manager to do other tasks while the report is being displayed, or after it is displayed. The main portion of the report window displays the report itself. One page of the report is displayed, beginning with the first page. To the left of the report, under the Preview tab, is a tree containing the groupings of the report. You can explore the tree by clicking + to expand each branch. By clicking a group, such as a computer name or date, the report will jump to the beginning of this grouping. Also, you can click on the arrows in the window s toolbar to page through the report, either forward or backward, or to jump to either the first or last page of the report. If you pass the cursor over any value displayed in the report, it will change into a magnifying glass. Double-click and a report is displayed showing only values for the grouping pointed to by the magnifying glass. A new tab is created in the left pane of the window for this report. You can now click any of the existing tabs to display its associated report. To remove a tab and its associated report, click the X in the report window s toolbar. If the Include graph checkbox was selected when you ran the report, a bar graph is displayed at the end of each report grouping containing the value of first field of the report for each grouping value. If you pass the cursor over any of the bars, it will change into a magnifying glass. Double-click to display all the values of this grouping in a new report. A new tab is also created in this case in the left pane of the window. To print a report, click the printer icon in the report window s toolbar. Specify which pages to print and the number of copies to print in the print dialog box, and click OK. To make changes to the printer used, the paper source or the paper orientation, click the printer setup icon prior to printing the report. The next occurrence of the text will be found. 14 Tivoli Management Solution for Microsoft SQL: Reporting and Graphing

Chapter 5. Creating Graphs Running Graphs Saving Selections for Graphs Running a graph can be as simple as selecting the desired graph in the hierarchical tree in the left pane of the Tivoli Report and Graph Manager, then clicking Run. However, prior to running the graph, you may want to specify what data is used to create the graph. The right pane of the Tivoli Report and Graph Manager contains tabs with which you can specify graph selections. To save a version of the currently selected graph that reflects the changes you have made to the graph s selections, click the Save button. Assign a name to this version of the graph and enter it when prompted. This name will now appear in the current view s tree as a user setting. When this user setting is selected in future runs of the Tivoli Report and Graph Manager, the current selections will be loaded. When the graph is created, it will use these selections to create the graph based on the contents of the database at run time. To also save changes you have made to the appearance of the graph, select Save from the File menu in the graph window. 15

16 Tivoli Management Solution for Microsoft SQL: Reporting and Graphing

Chapter 6. Viewing and Customizing Graphs The Graph Window Graphs are displayed in a separate graph window. After the graph window is displayed, you may go back to the Report and Graph Manager to do other tasks after the graph is displayed. The graph window includes the graph itself, and depending on the type of graph and the data selected, the graph window will also include titles and legends. Changing the Look of a Graph To change the look of a graph, click any of the icons in the graph window s toolbar. This will display the multi-tabbed graph control window. From this window, you can make many kinds of changes to the look of the graph. After making the desired changes, click Apply Now to see the changes in your graph without dismissing the graph control window, or click OK to make the changes in your graph and dismiss the graph control window. After you are done customizing the look of the graph, you can save these settings so you can create graphs in the future having the same look without having to make the changes again. Typical changes made to graphs include the following: Changing the Graph Type To change the graph type, click either the 2D Gallery or 3D Gallery tab, and click the desired graph type. Note that certain graph types do not make much sense for certain types of data. Common meaningful changes to the graph type include changing a 3D tape graph to a 2D line graph, or changing a 3D bar graph to a 2D bar graph. Changing the 3D Appearance For 3D graph types, you can click the 3D tab to change the three dimensional attributes of a graph. For example, you can add perspective to the graph and alter the position from which the graph is viewed. Adding Trend Lines to a Graph For 2D line graphs, you can add statistic trend lines to the graph to show lines for the mean, minimum and maximum, standard deviation, and best fit line or curve. To do this, click the Trends tab and check the desired statistic lines. Changing Colors To change the color of the graph, click the Markers tab. Click on each data set and select the desired color for each one. Changing Titles 17

Printing a Graph Saving the Look of a Graph Exporting a Graph Zooming in on a Line Graph Refreshing Graph Data To change the titles of the graph, click the Titles tab and enter the text of the titles to display with the graph. To print a graph, select Print from the File menu in the graph window. Specify the print options in the graph print dialog box and click OK. To save a version of the currently selected graph that reflects the changes you have made to both the graph s selections and the graph s appearance, select Save Settings from the File menu in the graph window. In the Save dialog box, enter the name for this version of the graph. This name will now appear in the current view s tree as a user setting. When this user setting is selected in future runs of the Tivoli Report and Graph Manager, the current selections and appearance settings will be loaded. When the graph is created, it will use these selections and settings to create the graph based on the contents of the database at run time. To export the graph, select Export from the File menu in the graph window. Enter the name of the JPEG file that will contain the graph, optionally indicate to include an HTML wrapper around the graph, enter any title and comments, and click OK. Exporting a graph allows you to include the graph within a web site. For 2D line graphs, you can use the mouse to zoom in to any part of the graph. Click on what you want to be the upper left corner of the graph, drag the mouse forming the rectangle to enlarge. When you release the mouse button, the graph will be redrawn, enlarging the selected rectangle into the total size of the graph. Repeat the process for further enlargement of a section of the graph. To return the graph to its original full view, select Full from the View menu in the graph window. To refresh the data in the report, select Refresh Graph from the View menu in the graph s window s. The graph will be recreated using the data at the time of the refresh. Four Admin rules (Hourly_Reports, Nightly_Reports, Weekly_Reports, and Monthly_Reports) will run at the appropriate interval to create whatever reports and graphs you specify in the corresponding batch folder. The Admin rules must be running for this to happen. When the reports and graphs are created, they are automatically exported to a file in the format specified. This file can then optionally be sent in an to one or more recipients. You may use the Report and Graph Manager to add reports and graphs to any of these batch folders, and to manage the list of reports and graphs specified. Adding a Report or Graph to Batch To add a report or graph to be run automatically in batch, select the report or graph in the hierarchical tree in the left pane of the Tivoli Report and Graph Manager, then select Add to Batch from the Edit menu. In the window displayed, enter the batch information for the report or graph and click OK. Entering or Modifying Batch Information for a Report or Graph The Title is the name that is displayed for this report or graph when managing the batch folders. The title must be unique since it is the identifying name of a report or graph in the batch facility. When modifying the batch information for a report or graph, you can not change its title. The Batch folder is the frequency the report or graph is created. Choose from the available list or click Add Folder to create a new batch folder. Note that populating a new batch folder is meaningful only if you also add a new Admin rule that is associated with this folder. When modifying the batch information for a report or graph, you can not change its batch folder. The Output directory is the disk and directory to which the report or graph will be exported. Click the box containing... to browse. The Output format is the format of the exported report or graph. Choose from the available list. The Output file name is the name of the exported file. Note that the file extension is based on the output format specified. to is the recipient or comma separated list of recipients that will receive the exported file in an . Note: To be able to reports and graphs, you must configure Tivoli Management Solution for Microsoft SQL to use Microsoft SQL as its mail service. This is done by selecting Configuration from the Manage menu of the Tivoli Enterprise Manager. Then, on the Mail Information tab of the Tivoli Configuration Manager, select Microsoft SQL as the mail service and enter a Profile name. If you enter at least one recipient, you may optionally specify the Subject and the Body of the message. You may also optionally specify to delete the file after it is ed. 19

Managing the Batch Folders If you want to temporarily suspend the creation of the report or graph, check Exclude from batch cycle. When you want to resume the creation of the report, simply uncheck the box. This saves you the trouble of removing the report or graph from the batch folder, only to re-enter the same information later To manage the reports and graphs run automatically in batch, select Manage Batch from the Edit menu. From the Batch Reports and Graphs window, you can add, modify or remove reports and graphs from the selected batch folder. First select the Batch folder, which is the frequency the report or graph is created. The titles of the reports and graphs currently defined in this folder are listed. Choose from the available list or click Add Folder to create a new batch folder. Note that populating a new batch folder is meaningful only if you also add a new Admin rule that is associated with this folder. If a report or graph is currently selected in the hierarchical tree in the left pane of the Tivoli Report and Graph Manager, the Add button will be enabled. Click Add to add the selected report or graph to the selected batch folder. In the window displayed, enter the batch information for the report or graph and click OK. To modify the batch information for a report or graph, select its title from the list displayed and click Modify. In the window displayed, make any desired modifications to the batch information for the report or graph and click OK.
