2. TWAIN 2.1 TWAIN TWAIN is the specification that defines the standard software protocol and application programming interface (API) for data exchange between a software application program and an image input device such as the image scanner. [TWAIN development background] In the past, development of a new scanner inevitably required the development of a compatible driver and sample (demonstration) program that are designed exclusively for the new scanner. As the scanner is upgraded, the driver may need to be up graded as well to maintain its compatibility with the upgraded scanner. Therefore, the user is most likely to restrict himself to one specific model of scanners to avoid the complication of learning new operation method and replacing the peripheral driver, etc., involved in scanner replacement. In view of the incompatibility among different scanners and peripheral equipment and the accompanying inconvenience, there was a demand for standardization of the related hardware and software, and TWAIN was established as a result. The user may now choose among all the input devices and software (driver or application programs) conforming the TWAIN standard, and configure a most suitable system for himself, without being restricted to the products of a certain series or a certain manufacturer. 2.2 TWAIN Application The TWAIN mainly applies to the following three software components: 1 Application software 2 Source manager 3 Source The components are related to each another as shown below. Figure TWAIN Application 3

4. Using the Driver 4.1 Selecting the Driver To use this driver from the TWAIN application, select FUJITSU M309xDC Scanner for ASPI ( FUJITSU M3091DC or FUJITSU M3092DC for STI) from the TWAIN data source (driver) selection screen. For general application, the data source selection screen is displayed by selecting [Select Scanner] or [Acquire...] menu from the menus. Refer to the instruction manual for the application used for details. 4.2 Screen Configuration Tab header Configuration Dialog Help Version Information Dialog Save & Load Dialog Scan Information Dialog Status Information The following pages contain explanation and operation description for each part. 12

4.3 Status Information Status Ready Indicates that scanning is possible. Scanning Indicates that scanning is in progress. Monitoring Indicates that the link between the scanner and operator panel is working. In this state, you can start scanning by pressing the scanner s Scan button, specify double-sided scanning, or switch paper feeding between ADF/FB by document detection on the ADF. Linkage or non-linkage can be specified in the Configuration dialog screen. Setting Only This is displayed when a specified TWAIN-API command is issued from the application. The [Scan] button and [Pre-Scan] button in the main dialog screen become gray to indicate that they cannot be selected. Scanning range Indicates the scanning range: left, top, width, and height of the Frame Area (fixed scanning area). Data size The approximate amount of data per image when data is scanned in the present setting. The progress of transmitting image data read from the scanner to the application is displayed during scanning. Note: This value is the amount of uncompressed data. The size of the stored file will differ from this value and is usually smaller if image compression is chosen and the image is compressed. 13

4.4 Setting of Image Scanning Information Image Type Color Using the Color type, the image is scanned in full color (24 bit full color). B&W (Text) This is made Black and white image by a simple slice. This uses a typical black and white scan method. This scanning mode is suitable for scanning line drawing or text. B&W (Photo) This minimizes the difference between the pixel density of the scanned image and the pixel density of the printed image to created better reproduction of a scanned photograph. B&W (OCR) The image is scanned in black and white. Binary coding can be performed with the floating slice. This is suitable for use with a character recognition application. B&W (Diagram) Scans data using the halftone processing, with dithering. Uses the patterns set in Halftone to simulate data in black and white. Selection of built-in dithered patterns or three custom patterns is allowed. This image type is suitable for scanning images containing light and shadow such as a photograph. Gray Scans data using 256-level monochrome gray scale. Light and shade in photographs can be represented with greater fidelity. This scanning mode employs far more memory than the Black & White mode. 14

Scanning Type Selects the feeding device. The image scanner uses a document bed called the Flatbed as well as an automatic document feeder (ADF) for feeding scanned document. The ADF usually enables the some documents to be scanned only once. The flatbed allows the same documents to be scanned repeatedly. Flatbed Scan Reads a document placed on the flatbed of the device. This message is not displayed because the M3091DC image scanner has no flatbed. The displayed Scanning Type in the main dialog screen becomes gray when Enable Scanner s Panel and Document Detection and Select Scanning Type by Scanner in the Configuration Dialog is checked. When there is no document on the ADF, this paperfeeding mode is used for scanning. ADF Scan Reads the document on the device s ADF. Here, only one side is read. When Enable Scanner Panel and Document Detection is selected in the Configuration Dialog and when Select Scanning Type by Scanner is selected in the Configuration Dialog, Scanning Type in the main dialog screen becomes gray. If single-sided scanning is specified on the operator panel when there are documents on the ADF, this paper-feeding mode is used for scanning. ADF & Duplex Scan To scan both the front and the back of a page, select this setting. If this setting is selected, the document scanned in the front to back to front to back order. When Enable Scanner Panel and Document Detection is selected in the Configuration Dialog and when Select Scanning Type by Scanner is selected in the Configuration Dialog, the Scanning Type entry in the main dialog screen becomes gray. If doublesided scanning is specified on the operator panel when there are documents on the ADF, this paper-feeding mode is used for scanning. Note: To specify ADF & Duplex Scan, the number of copies designated should be based on the number of pages, not the number of sheets of paper. In other words, one original with a front and back is regarded as two pages. 15

Resolution Specifies the number of pixels (dots) per inch. Selects a fixed resolution from list or Custom. Custom is possible to define the resolution by one-grade increments from a minimum of 50 to a maximum of 600 (dpi). High resolution requires more memory. Density Specifies the scan density. Very Dark Select this setting for scanning at the highest density. Slightly Dark Select this setting for scanning at high density. Normal Select this setting for scanning at normal density. Slightly light Select this setting for scanning at low density. Very Light Select this setting for scanning at the lowest density. The density can be set again by using the dial on the scanner. When the option Enable Scanner Panel and Document Detection was selected in the Configuration Dialog and when Enable Select Density by density dial in the Configuration Dialog is selected, this item becomes gray. As the dial is moved toward Up, the density becomes higher (Normal -> Slightly Dark -> Very Dark). As the dial is moved toward Down, the density becomes lower (Normal -> Slightly light -> Very Light). Normal indicates neutral density. 16

Custom The scanning density can be customized. Selecting Custom activates the [Image Adjust] button. The following image adjustment dialog screen is displayed by selecting [Image Adjust] (when the image type Color has been selected). After Adjustment Shows a sample image after adjustment. Sample Shows a sample image before adjustment. Correction Selects an adjustment parameter. The setting value of the selected content and the slider control are displayed. Shadow/Highlight The highlight allows the brightest part of the document to be controlled. The higher highlight value, the heavier image. The lower highlight value, the lighter image. 17

All levels in the document that are higher than the designated value are set to 255 (the brightest level) in the output image. The shadow allows the darkest part of the document to be controlled. The higher shadow value, the darker image. The lower shadow value, the lighter image. All levels in the document that are lower than the designated value are set to 0 (the darkest level) in the output image. Any levels on the document outside these settings are flooded (all 0 or all 255), while the interval between the highlight and shadow settings is equally divided into 255 levels, which are used to create the output images. This means that if the highlight and shadow settings are close to each other, the contrast for that interval in the scanned document will be very strong (but with all other areas maximizing high or low). Contrast/Brightness <Contrast> Sets the contrast of light and shadow in a scanned image. Specify the contrast with a number in the range of 1(low[soft]) to 255(high[sharp]). If this value is increased, the dark part of the image is shown darker and the light part is shown lighter. <Brightness> Specify the brightness with a number in the range of 1 (dark) to 255 (bright). To brighten the overall image, increase the value of the setting. To darken the overall image, decrease the value. Gamma This setting corrects nonlinear distortion in the obtained image. Scanner sensors are generally designed to generate output linear to the density of the light reflected from the document. However, most output terminals do not produce output that has the desired linear relation to the input, and this distortion must be corrected. When the lower gamma value is set, the darker image is obtained. The higher gamma value is set, the lighter image is obtained. 18

Threshold Set the threshold value by which the black and the white of black-and-white images are distinguished. Specify a number in the range of 1 to 255. If the light color in the scanned document is read as white, increase the threshold value. To eliminate light colored area in the scanned document, decrease this value. Channel Specify whether the image adjustment parameters (e.g., for shadow, contrast, highlight) are to be applied in all channel (Red, Green, Blue) channels or whether the image is to be adjusted for each channel individually. The set values for the adjustment parameters when switching from adjustment for all channels to adjustment for each channel individually are retained whenever this channel parameter is selected. The selection of an individual RGB channel and the corresponding parameters cannot be specified from the application. Selection of this channel must be specified in advance using the user interface (UI). This setting is valid only when the image type Color has been specified. [OK] button Validates setting values and closes the image adjustment dialog screen. [Cancel] button Invalidates setting values, resets them to the previous value, and terminates the operation. [Default] button Resets setting values to their initial values. Sample switching The pop-up menu opens after clicking the right button in the main dialog screen. This makes it possible to change the sample by using the clipboard and the BITMAP file. Use a gray scale image not adjusted from the scanner as sample. 19

4.5 Specifying Driver Operation Scan Scans the specified scan range based on set values. The following progress indicator is displayed during scanning to show the progress of the scan operation. To stop scanning, click the [Cancel] button. Pre-Scan Scans in a preliminary image based on set values, and display the image in the layout window. Before actual scanning, the pre-scan function can be used to display the entire document for specifying the desired scan area. Close Closes the dialog box without scanning. When you change a setting, the changed settings are saved. 20

4.6 Scan Area Tab Frame Area Document Size Select the size of the document to be scanned. The following regular sizes are available: A4, A5, A6, B5, business card, letter size and legal size, etc. There are also three user-defined sizes. Select the desired document size to be scanned.
