1 Assignment A04 - Conceptual Space Planning Purpose: In any Integrative Design Process one must have an intimate understanding of the utilization of the spatial requirements, and the relationships between these different spaces of the program. The purpose this assignment it to assist you in developing an understanding of the spatial volumes and relationships of the building s space planning. TASK: Develop in Revit the spatial requirements of the building design, using digital program blocks to build spatial conceptual models of your building. Area Schedule. The first step is to establish the space activities for the design. This includes the area and volumes required for those activities, their furniture requirements, their occupancy type, and code limitations. 1. Area Schedule. Develop a spreadsheet of the space requirements of the building. Use the supplied Excel spreadsheet as a model for this area schedule. Write formulas to calculate the different spatial requirements. 2. Mass Floor Schedule in Revit. Include where appropriate any parameters and formulas (See REVIT Tutorials) Program Blocks. The next step is to develop a simple rectilinear mass model of each of the spaces required in the Area Schedule. These are not a design of the space, but placeholders for the spatial and volumetric requirements of the building. 3. Watch the Conceptual Space Planning tutorials by Daniel Nielsen. (See REVIT Tutorials). 4. Use Revit families to create simple rectilinear mass families of each space. 5. Building Spatial Analysis & Space Planning Concept. a. Program Block Studies. Arrange the program blocks based on the climate-response, site planning, space utilization and functions of the building. b. Conceptual Mass Studies. Compare your Program Block massing to your Concept Mass studies from Assignment 03. c. Concept Mass & Program Blocks. Merge the two studies above into a new massing study, adjusting either to meet the requirements of the other. Presentation. Develop a 36 x 48 sheet in Revit that includes the following drawings. (See attached images for examples) 6. Program Block Study. The program block layout you determined best met the design goals of the project. 7. Conceptual Mass Study. The conceptual mass you determined best met the design goals of the project. 8. Conceptual Mass & Program Block Proposal. The final version of your massing study which merges the Conceptual Mass with the Program Blocks. 9. Concept Floor Plans Revit floor plans of the mass model above with spaces, key points of entrance, site conditions annotated. 10. Concept Sections. Show vertical layout of key spaces, including the buildings relationship to the site. Color coded and to scale. 11. Concept Perspectives.
