3 Concrete tests Dimensions, tolerances and uses of cast test specimens 1 Scope This standard specifies a method of ensuring that the nominal dimensions and shape of cast concrete test specimens in the form of cubes, cylinders, or rectangular prisms of square crosssection are suitable for their intended use. 2 Dimensions Ensure that the dimensions of the test specimen are within 10 % of the appropriate basic dimensions given in figures 1 to 3. The tolerance on the basic dimensions between each face of a specimen is ± 1,0 %. The basic dimension d of test specimens should be at least four times the nominal maximum size of the aggregate in the concrete. NOTE The dimensions printed in bold type are the preferred sizes. Ensure that the generatrix (i.e. the longitudinal surface plane parallel to the longitudinal axis) of cylinders used in splitting tests is flat to within 0,001d. 3.2 Ensure that the angle between the adjacent faces of cubes and prisms and the angle between the end surfaces and the generatrix of cylinders is 90 ± 0,5. 4 Uses of test specimens 4.1 Cubes Cubes are used for compression tests and for indirect tension tests (by splitting) on the faces. 2

5 4.2 Cylinders Cylinders are used for axial compression tests for direct tension tests and for splitting along the generatrix. 4.3 Prisms Prisms are used primarily for bending tests. Cubes cut from the portions of prisms that remain after bending tests may be used for compression tests and indirect tension tests (by splitting). 5 Calculation of test results If the actual dimensions of the test specimen are within 1 % of the basic dimensions, test results may be calculated on the basic dimensions. If the actual dimensions are outside this tolerance, calculations should be based on the actual dimensions of the test specimen, measured to the nearest millimetre. SABS 3
