1 RRS Color Management In order to achieve good quality, the proper color management files must be used.. You will be provided with the files shown below which are specific to the RRS. 1RRS Color Management 1Newspaper 1for Adobe Products North America Prepress.csf RRS_May2011.joboptions 3U.S. Web Coated (SWOP) v2.icc.icc You may have the above files already installed on your computer. If not the files provided will need to be installed in the correct locations on your computer for them to be available to image editing and other applications. 1. ICC Profiles (*.icc) Mac OS X Adobe Products: /Library/Application Support/Adobe/Color/Profiles/Recommended Mac OS X Other Products: Storing profiles in /Library/ColorSync/Profiles allows all users to use them. Note: An alternative area, for users without Admin privileges, is User/<username>/Library/Application Support/Adobe PDF/Settings or /Users/<username>/Library/ColorSync/Profiles. Profiles stored in these areas are available only to the current user. Windows 7, Vista and XP Adobe Products: \Program Files\Common Files\Adobe\Color\Profiles\Recommended Windows 7, Vista and XP Other Products: \Windows\system32\spool\drivers\color in Windows XP right click on the profile and select install profile. Windows copies the profile to the correct directory automatically. Important note: If you are replacing a profile in Windows XP, the above shortcut does not work. The Profiles must be manually copied to the correct directory for the original profile to be replaced.

2 We use InDesign CS2, Illustrator CS2, Photoshop CS2 and Acrobat 7.0 Professional. The following is based on those applications. 2. CSF (Color Settings File) files (*.csf) Mac OS X: /Library/Application Support/Adobe/Color/Settings/Recommended Windows 7, Vista and XP: \Program Files\Common Files\Adobe\Color\Settings\Recommended 3. Adobe PDF Preset (.joboptions) Mac OS X: /Library/Application Support/Adobe PDF/Settings Windows 7, Vista and XP: \Documents and Settings\All Users\Shared Documents\Adobe PDF\Settings \Program Files\Adobe\Acrobat 7.0\Distillr\Settings

3 Load Adobe PDF Presets Using Indesign: 1. Start up Indesign 2. Click on File, go down to Adobe PDF Preset then over to Define 3. Click on Load 4. Navigate to and highlight the joboption file needed, such as RRS_Newspaper.joboptions 5. Click on Open 6. Scroll down in the top wiindow and if you see RRS_Newspaper then the presets are in place

4 Load Adobe PDF Presets Using Illustrator 1. Start up Illustrator 2. Click on Edit, go down to Adobe PDF Presets Click on Import 4. Navigate to and highlight the joboption file needed, such as RRS_Newspaper.joboptions 5. Click on Open 6. Scroll down in the top wiindow and if you see RRS_Newspaper then the presets are in place and ready for use. 7. Click OK

5 2. Loading Color Management Files into Applications Once the files have been placed in the correct locations you can begin loading them into your image editing and other applications. InDesign, Illustrator, and Photoshop include several pre configured settings for working spaces and policies for color images, and can share *.csf files. To achieve color consistency among InDesign, Illustrator, and Photoshop, you must select the same color setting in all three applications. To select the proper Color Settings File, do the following in InDesign, Illustrator, and Photoshop: 1. Choose Edit > Color Settings to open the Color Settings dialog box. 2. Choose North America Prepress 2 3. Click OK. 4. You should quit the application at this time to lock in your changes.

6 Exporting PDFs from Indesign: 1. Click on File, go down to Export 2. Enter file name next to Save As: 3. Navigate to where you want the pdf saved 4. Make sure that Adobe PDF is selected in the drop down menu next to Format: 5. Click on Save 6. At the top next to Adobe PDF Preset: use the drop down menu to select RRS_Newspaper 7. If you have an application that allows you to extract pages, as single files, you can select All in the Pages section. If you don t have such an application you will have to process each page one by one. Select Range: and enter the page position number, for the page to be processed. You will have to do this entire process, for each page, from beginning to end. 8. Click Export

7 Exporting PDFs from Illustrator: 1. Click on File, go down to Save As Enter file name next to Save As: 3. Navigate to where you want the pdf saved 4. Make sure that Adobe PDF (pdf) is selected in the drop down menu next to Format: 5. Click on Save 6. At the top next to Adobe PDF Preset: use the drop down menu to select RRS_Newspaper 7. Click Save PDF
