The main drivers for migration Explosion of active IP-based end point devices iphone, smart phones, mobile broadband. New services and new user behavior 50 billion IP connections globally by 2020 driven mainly by machine-to-machine (M2M) and new applications Running out of IPv4 addresses can hinder growth of number of subscribers Regulation IPv6 Transition for Mobile Networks Ericsson Confidential Ericsson AB Page 4
Status of IPv6 in Cellular Networks Deployment today involves either public IPv4 addresses or private addresses and a NAT But networks do support both IPv4 and IPv6 Supported in 3GPP releases since R5 Network products generally support this today Some newer signaling protocols are even IPv6-only Some but not all terminals support IPv6 The situation in cellular networks is a part of the overall IPv6 deployment situation - lack of IPv6 services is a barrier IPv6 Transition for Mobile Networks Ericsson Confidential Ericsson AB Page 5
Burning issues & Key questions How will new services impact existing services? How to provide always-on services to cater for M2M? Do we need to migrate now? How far can our current address space go? How can we provide IPv6-IPv4 co-existence? During migration, how can we minimize the impact on user experience? How can we minimize migration costs? IPv6 Transition for Mobile Networks Ericsson Confidential Ericsson AB Page 6
Ipv6 migration Migration from IPv4 to IPv6 cannot be done in just one day Smooth migration to IPv6 Need to still support IPv4 for a while Co-existence phase of IPv4 and IPv6 IPv6 transition means you don t have IPv4 anymore IPv4 Only IPv4 / IPv6 Co-existence IPv6 Only today IPv4 depletion IPv6 transition t IPv6 Transition for Mobile Networks Ericsson Confidential Ericsson AB Page 7

Benefits of the strategy Enable new IPv6-based services as required by the operator s business Stepwise approach allowing people to gain experience and competence gradually Introduction in existing network in multiple steps until full IPv6 functionality has been reached in all parts of the network Cost-effective network design reducing both risk and the cost of implementation IPv6 Transition for Mobile Networks Ericsson Confidential Ericsson AB Page 10

Technical recommendation (cont.) Transport plane Introduce IPv6 depending on IPv6 availability in client nodes and market needs Walled Garden Services Services and users reside within a contained environment - Walled Garden (e.g. IP Multimedia Subsystem IMS) One IP version. No IP version Interworking functions within the Walled Garden. i.e. may remain with IPv4 IPv6 deployment may be OPEX driven O&M Network May use IPv4 forever IPv6 Transition for Mobile Networks Ericsson Confidential Ericsson AB Page 20
So, now you are ipv6 only Before everybody is IPv6 your network may be IPv6 How to reach those IPv4 cavemen? ;) IPv6 Transition for Mobile Networks Ericsson Confidential Ericsson AB Page 21
LTE and IPv6 IPv6 Transition for Mobile Networks Ericsson Confidential Ericsson AB Page 22
Lte overview LTE is specified by 3GPP as an All IP Networking Architecture LTE offers superior user experience and simplified technology for next-generation mobile broadband. LTE needs more capacity for demanding applications such as interactive TV, mobile video blogging, advanced games and professional services. LTE provides downlink peak rates above 100Mbps. The current standardization of LTE allows for speeds more than 300Mbps. IPv6 Transition for Mobile Networks Ericsson Confidential Ericsson AB Page 23
Lte and ipv6 More and more devices are using mobile networks to reach the Internet Also to IP services such as IPTV and Multimedia Telephony Mobile Broadband Router is another device connecting to mobile networks IPv6 must be a requisite from the beginning for LTE to support such amount of devices and services Verizon is requiring IPv6 devices to connect to its LTE IPv6 Transition for Mobile Networks Ericsson Confidential Ericsson AB Page 24
conclusions IPv6 Transition for Mobile Networks Ericsson Confidential Ericsson AB Page 25
conclusions IPv6 helps to expand customer base 3GPP and IETF already have standards Equipment providers already supporting those standards Migration can be done with a stepwise approach A detailed plan is needed for migration Co-existence is inevitable (and maybe forever) Need of NAT64 for those still in IPv4 Dark Ages LTE must be configured with IPv6 from the beginning IPv6 Transition for Mobile Networks Ericsson Confidential Ericsson AB Page 26
