3 IS V Series Power Module Alarm De- Sensitized Firmware Upgrade INFORMATION SHEET 1 INTRODUCTION This document describes how to install upgraded firmware to V series power module interface PWBs (NAPI71). NOTE Upgrade all modules, including IPAs. 1.1 Equipment Affected This procedure involves the transmitter RF power and IPA modules as per Table 1. The upgraded firmware de-sensitizes the PA fail alarms to prevent false trips. 1.2 Responsibility for Implementation of Procedure This procedure should be carried out by suitably qualified station maintenance personnel. 1.3 Scheduling This procedure may be implemented at the convenience of station maintenance personnel. It will be necessary to have the transmitter off during this upgrade. 1.4 Manpower Requirements This procedure requires approximately 30 minutes to complete. 1.5 Equipment Required The following is a list of equipment which is required in order to complete the upgrades: PC with serial COM port (or USB port) and AVR Studio software Atmel AVRISP programming pod (AVR Studio is supplied with pod or can be downloaded from 2 PRE-INSTALLATION Perform the following steps before installing the firmware upgrade: Ensure AVRStudio software is installed on PC. Connect the serial / USB cable between the PC COM / USB port and the AVRISP programming pod. The power modules and IPA module(s) will be upgraded while they are installed in the transmitter. Ensure the AVRISP pod (with cable attached) can reach all the modules. The 6-pin programming header on the power module interface PWB is J12. Figure 2 illustrates the position of J12 and the correct orientation of the AVRISP pod ribbon cable when connected. 3 FIRMWARE UPGRADE INSTALLATION Install the module firmware as follows: (a) Place the transmitter in LOCAL control. Press RF OFF button and ensure RF is OFF before proceeding. (b) Start AVR Studio 4 as follows: Start Programs Atmel AVR Tools AVR Studio4 A default window will appear. Press Cancel. See Figure 1. 4 (e) Click on button and wait while software attempts to detect the AVRISP pod. It should detect, but if not you may be prompted to select the appropriate com port, or USB port. (f) Observe status window (bottom of Figure 3) and verify detection process, (e.g., AVRISP found on comx.. or detecting USB). Select device Atmega8 (see Figure 3). Figure 1: AVR Studio application (c) Connect AVRISP pod ribbon connector to J12 on module A interface PWB, observe red band on ribbon cable orientated to pin 1 of J12. (See Figure 2.) Figure 3: Status window Figure 2: Red band of ribbon cable on left NOTE It may be necessary to momentarily extract the module in order to connect the pod ribbon cable to J12. (d) Observe the status LED on the AVRISP pod flash green, then red, and then solidly green. Note that the LED on the USB AVRISP version will stay solid red and then turn green when connected to the module. (g) Set Programming mode to ISP and check the Erase Device Before Programming and Verify Device Before Programming boxes. (h) In Flash section press button and select V_NAPI71_1_MMDDYY.hex file or V_3_NAPI71_1_MMDDYY.hex as per Table 1. This file is provided by Nautel. A label on the NAPI71 PWB states the original.hex file. (i) Press Program button in Flash section. Note progress in status window and verify status is OK when completed as in Figure 4. 5 Re-install the module into its slot. (m) Repeat steps (c) through (l) for all power modules and IPA module(s). 4 RETURNING EQUIPMENT TO SERVICE (a) On the transmitter Diagnostic Display view the module status screen by selecting (pressing) either Menu > PA Status and Fans > PA Status or Menu > Module Status. Using the up/down keys scroll through all modules and the IPA module(s) and verify that no modules are reporting Offline. Figure 4: Program button and Status window (j) Extract the module and remove the AVRISP connector from J12. (k) Apply a new updated sticker to the PWB (rear end of module) to indicate the software version installed. (l) (b) Press RF ON. Verify the transmitter operates normally and no module failures are reported. (c) If the transmitter was in Remote control prior to this upgrade, reset control to Remote.
