OFELIA The European OpenFlow Experimental Facility EU-JP symposium on Future Internet / New Generation Networks Part: Federation of testbeds: Control, tools and experiments Tokyo, January 2012 Presenter: Koichi Funaya; NEC Europe Ltd.
Outline Some background information Why Ofelia is invited to this track. OFELIA the European OpenFlow experimental facility Opportunities to extend scope and partnership under the WP 2013 time frame? 19/01/2012 2
Some background information There was a discussion about connecting testbeds in EU & Japan during the previous EU-Japan Symposium Joint Collaboration Sheet Agreement: It would be good to Connect Ofelia testbed with JGN++ OpenFlow network Connect the test network operational platform Run international tests by third party users Expected impact and benefits World-wide Internet Experiments with diverse setting and technology availability; larger scale experiments Integration of diverse engineering methodologies More comprehensive and more reliable test results Improved applications 19/01/2012 3
OFELIA OpenFlow in Europe Linking Infrastructure and Applications EU FP7 project Started September 2010 Duration: 3 years Total budget 6.3M, funding 4.45M 12 partners Academic institutions Industry partners: Deutsche Telekom, NEC, ADVA Optical Stanford university (Nick McKeown, Guru Parulkar) official partner (control framework, architecture, experience) 8 OpenFlow-enabled islands at academic institutions Berlin (TUB) Gent (IBBT) Zürich (ETH) Barcelona (i2cat) Essex (UEssex) Rome and Catania (CNIT) Trento (CREATE- NET) partial replacement of existing campus network with OpenFlowenabled Switches central hub, large-scale emulation connection to OneLab and GENI L2 switches and Optical equipment (ROADM ring) national hub for UK optical community; L2 switches and L1/L0 ROADMs (optical mesh network), FPGA testbed two islands with focus on Information Centric Networking a city-wide distributed island based on L2 switches and NetFPGA; opt-in users via heterogeneous access technologies 19/01/2012 4
Scientific challenges and objectives OFELIA builds the first OpenFlow switching testbed in Europe. Essential for Future Internet experimentation. What is OpenFlow and why experimental facility? Scientific challenges? Open issues? Advances beyond state of the art. Priorities w.r.t. scientific challenges? Future Internet research needs large-scale flexible environments supporting virtualization, allowing new control and routing algorithms Poor support for experiments in today s routers & switches Large OpenFlow testbeds in the US (GENI) & Japan OFELIA creates real-world experimental networking substrate Allows flexible control down to individual flows Is protocol agnostic, programmable, scalable Allows deployment & test of new controllers & control apps Main objective is the creation of a research facility including Virtualization: automatic creation of slices Multi-domain extensions of controllers (for federation of islands) Extension into optical and wireless technologies OF extensions needed for multi-layer, multi-domain experiments Any domain or layer borders require flow processing; Interface between controller and processing plug-ins needs to be developed & tested Extend filter format description to generic labels (CarrierEther,IPv6, opt. circuits) non-ip experiments such as content-based addressing NW Control application OpenFlow controller Switch packet/ circuits Processing 19/01/2012 5
OFELIA facility operation and phased extension From isolated islands to centralized resource management. Explain how an early operative prototype will be gradually expanded Three and who project will do phases it, including to set-up budgetary and extend issues the facility Gradual expansion of early operative facility Open Calls Operation of the individual islands, one partner per island has the lead Phase i: OF controllers and switches in place, first local experiments concluded Phase ii: Connect islands and extend OF experimentation to wireless and optics Phase iii: Automate resource assignment and provide connections to other FIRE and non-european research facilities Open Calls to extend facility & consortium will be published after M5 & M17 Total budget 830,000 max. 200 K funding per experiment First closed March 30, 2011 Second call will close end of March 2012 Open Calls are promoted through and FIRE Station Standard communication channels (mailing lists, IEEE ComMag) Industry fora: Optical Internetworking Forum, Open Grid Forum i: Create islands on L2 M7 ii: Connect islands and extend to wireless/optics M19 iii: Ressource assignment automization and connection to other facilities 19/01/2012 6
OFELIA is Available And Free For Use The OFELIA facility is open as a best-effort service Any user accepting the usage policy is welcome Connection to the facility through OpenVPN via the central hub at IBBT in Ghent Through a graphical user interface, a user can create and run experiments An experiment/slice consists of A number of end points (Xen-based virtual machines, currently) OpenFlow access to a set of switches that connect the end points The user s OpenFlow controller can be deployed on one of the VMs Links between end points and switch ports Best effort (shared), mostly Dedicated capacity will be available at least on some lines Facility is publicly available for experiments Feedback is very much appreciated Instructions, Wiki, Videos, Open Calls, press releases, contact The control framework software is free Build your own OFELIA islands, connect over to us, develop further 19/01/2012 7
Interconnecting OFELIA with other testbeds Once the OFELIA islands are interconnected/federated, experiments can span several islands The control framework will enable experimenters to create experiments that make use of several islands` specific functionalities OFELIA is not only connecting/federating its own islands Interconnecting and federating with other OpenFlow testbeds are on the agenda More about this in the talk of Dimitra 19/01/2012 8
Conclusion OFELIA: The European OpenFlow Experimental Facility The facility is set up and is publicly available. Efforts to interconnect it with other test beds under way. OFELIA ends August Question: How to best exploit its results? OFELIA provides a suitable platform for collaboration. 19/01/2012 9
END
Opportunities to extend scope and partnership under the WP 2013 time frame? Federated EU-Japan OpenFlow-based facility enables Joint research Organizational issues in terms of using and accessing resources in the (federated) network Technical issues on interaction between the facility/cross-domain management systems Application/Service-specific topics World-wide Internet Experiments with diverse setting and technology availability Bigger variety and better scalability of experiments Integration of diverse engineering methodologies More comprehensive and more reliable test results Allow for larger scale experiments (scalability being a criticism of the OpenFlow technology) Improved applications 19/01/
