Federation and Control Frameworks OFELIA has adopted the expedient framework FOAM is the next generation drop-in replacement for expedient FOAM development is done in Stanford, OFELIA development team plans to adopt FOAM for OFELIA s next release Separates GUI and clearing house functions (e.g. user management) from resource control (Aggregate Manager) functionality and opt-in manager for controlling FlowVisor (the slicing mechanism in OpenFlow) Implements GENI v3 Rspec and SFA v2.0 for SFA support, FOAM borrowed code from PlanetLab including certificate based authentication FOAM runs at BBN within GENI FOAM the de facto standard for federating with GENI based test beds in the US, will be adopted by OFELIA as well, work is ongoing for moving towards FOAM 7
OFELIA Architecture: The Big Picture 8
FIBRE: Blueprint for inter-continental cooperation Future Internet testbeds/experimentation between BRazil and Europe Goal: Inter-continental federated large-scale experimental Future Internet facility Partners from OFELIA and OneLab2, e.g. i2cat, Uessex, UPMC, UTH Islands in Barcelona and Essex will be enhanced to cope with the additional load of more users and experiments from FIBRE OFELIA CF will be extended for controlling NITOS resources NITOS is a wireless testbed heavily using the control Management Framework (OMF) from NICTA FIBRE kickoff meeting took place October 2011 in the context of the Future Internet Week, Poznan FIBRE opens OFELIA to a much larger user community and integration of the NITOS testbed will advance the OFELIA CF towards supporting OMF resources 19/01/2012 EU-Japan Symposium Experimental R&D over federated Japan and EU testbeds 9
Project at a Glance What? Main goal Create a common space between the EU and Brazil for Future Internet (FI) experimental research into network infrastructure and distributed applications, by building and operating a federated EU-Brazil Future Internet experimental facility. UEssex UFPA NICTA UPMC i2cat Nextworks Who? 15 partners How? Requested to the EC ~1.1M and CNPq R$ 2.6 in funding to perform 6 activities WP1: Project management UTH WP2, WP3: Building and operating the Brazilian (WP2) and European (WP3) facilities WP4: Federation of FIBRE-EU and FIBRE-BR facilities WP5: Joint pilot experiments to showcase the potential of the federated FIBRE facility WP6: Dissemination and collaboration UFG UFSCar CPqD,USP UNIFACS RNP, UFF UFRJ
Objective 1: FI Experimental Facility Build a shared large-scale experimental facility that enables experimentation on network infrastructure and distributed applications, consisting in a new testbed in Brazil and an enhancement of the FP7 OFELIA facility and the basic wireless facility of FP7 OneLab, the UTH NITOS testbed, both in Europe. How it will be achieved: i2cat and UEssex will enhance their local OFELIA testbeds (islands) to provide dedicated services for FI experimentation to the FIBRE users. Focus is on wired experiments. UTH will enhance its NITOS wireless testbed to provide dedicated services for FI experimentation to the FIBRE users. Focus is on wireless experiments. All the Brazilian partners will build and operate a Future Internet testbed dedicated to the FIBRE users. Focus on both wired and wireless experiments. i2cat, UEssex, Nextworks and some Brazilian partners will enhance the OFELIA Control Framework to serve as the CMF of some islands. UTH, NICTA and some Brazilian partners will enhance the OMF and OML control and monitoring frameworks to serve as the CMF of some islands.
FIBRE-EU facility FIBRE island at UEssex (Colchester), co-located with OFELIA island FIBRE island at i2cat (Barcelona), co-located with OFELIA island NITOS testbed at UTH (Volos)
FIBRE-BR facility Location and interconnection of FIBRE sites in Brazil FIBRE-BR site with examples of site specific resources and external connectivity 13
Objective 2: Federation of facilities Federate the Brazilian and European facilities, to allow researchers to use resources of both FIBRE-EU and FIBER-BR testbeds in the same experiment. How it will be achieved: Federation of control frameworks The control frameworks used in the project will be studied and federation requirements extracted. The right solutions for the federation framework will be chosen (for example SFA) and customized to the FIBRE facility Software tools will be developed and/or customized to implement and deploy the federation architecture. Physical interconnection FIBRE-EU test-beds will be connected among them, probably through GEANT FIBRE-BR test-beds will be connected through RNP FIBRE-BR and FIBRE-EU will be connected through an intercontinental link between the point of entry (hub) at each side
Objective 3: Pilot experiments and showcases Showcase the potential of the facility by demonstrating experimental networkenabled applications deployed on top of the federated facilities resources. How it will be achieved: Design and Development of 3 technology pilots Intelligent mobility management to provide (horizontal and vertical) seamless handover in a multi-technology wireless network in which low-cost laptops tend to transit in groups between dense connectivity and sparse connectivity scenarios Intelligent high-definition content delivery of high-definition media over WDM optical networks Automatic on-demand network connectivity services offered by the GMPLS control plane on top of the programmable optical network substrate controller The technology pilots will be first tried locally and later over the federated facility The technology pilots validate and showcase the power of the federated facility 15

Deploying Open Flow in the Optical Layer Current OpenFlow switch implementations do not support the notion of flow in a circuit switched core A proper mapping/translation between the concept of flow in packet switched and circuit switched domain is required The OpenFlow controller in circuit switch domain should be responsible for provisioning and termination of connections (via the extensions to the current OpenFlow protocol) We propose a migration of the OpenFlow concept to the Core networking: Extends the OpenFlow protocol to provide network provisioning and infrastructure slicing in circuit switch domain and interfacing (at the edges) with OpenFlow-based packet switching domain. ECOC: GMPLS-OpenFLow Integration, OFC: Optical Flowvisor
