2 1. Activate your OpticStudio Online account Open your activation * and click Activate your account to open the OpticStudio Online account activation page. The activation page includes a link to the services agreement, which you must read before you continue. Activating your online account acknowledges that you have read and agreed to these terms and conditions. Enter your first and last name on the activation page, and create a case-sensitive password. Click Start to activate your OpticStudio Online account. After activating your account, your Launchpad appears. The Launchpad displays all installed applications and provides links to relevant pages on the Zemax website. *OpticStudio Online is hosted by Frame, so your invitation will be sent from Frame. 2. Start a session To start OpticStudio, click OpticStudio Instance 1. The system searches for an online instance to connect with, which may take up to three minutes during the initial system launch. The status indicator displays the anticipated wait time. The first time you open OpticStudio on your account, the following notification appears. 2

3 This notifies you that OpticStudio must copy the default files (such as catalogs and sample files) to your personal online storage, called the P drive. You have 10 GB of free secure storage on the P drive. Note that Zemax does not have access to this drive, nor any of the files that you store on it. The default files only need to be copied over the first time you run OpticStudio and when a new version is released. After the files are copied to your P drive, OpticStudio opens on the Startup Defaults page. If you plan to design imaging systems like cameras and telescopes, select Imaging/Afocal Systems. If you plan to design illumination systems like headlamps or backlighting, select Illumination Systems. Click OK to begin your work in OpticStudio. 3. Navigate your session During your session, you ll see a status bar at the bottom of the OpticStudio Online session window. Hover over or click the icons for more information. You can also check out the Interactive Session Guide. You can also double-click a blank section of the status bar to minimize or maximize the window. This lets you access the Launchpad while OpticStudio is open, enabling you to open another application or a second instance of OpticStudio. To restore the window to full size, click anywhere in the minimized window. 3

4 4. Stay connected To stay connected to your session, you must remain active. If there s no mouse or keyboard movement detected in OpticStudio for 30 minutes, your session is automatically disconnected (but not powered off). Disconnect Disconnecting from your session is similar to detaching the monitor from your computer; all active applications keep running after you disconnect. This enables you to pause your session and resume where you left off. You can even disconnect from one device and resume your session from another device. To disconnect from your session, click the gear icon in the lower-left corner and select Disconnect. Resume You can resume your session by clicking any of the application icons in the Launchpad. Idle time If OpticStudio isn t running calculations when you disconnect, your session remains active in the background for the duration of the defined idle time. The idle time is 10 minutes. When you disconnect, an idle time remaining notice appears to the left of the status indicator. After 10 minutes of idle time, there are two possible scenarios: 1. If OpticStudio is running a calculation (such as updating an analysis or running an optimization), your session remains active and the idle timer restarts. This process continues until OpticStudio finishes calculating, or until you reach the maximum session time. 4

5 2. If OpticStudio is not running calculations, your session powers off. OpticStudio automatically saves your files before your session powers off, and these files are stored in a folder called Autosave (P:\Zemax\Autosave). This folder was created when you copied the default files to your personal online storage drive. Maximum session time When you ve reached the maximum session time limit, your session powers off. The maximum session time is 16 hours*. If you need to extend this, please let us know at Support@Zemax.com. To be safe, always save your work before disconnecting, and note the time elapsed at the bottom of your session. *In the 2-week trial version, the maximum session time is limited to 6 hours. 5. Save files and end your session When you re finished working, save your files and power off your session. Files are only retained between sessions if they are saved to your personal storage drive (P drive), or downloaded from your session using the Download Now folder. Copying or moving files to the Download Now folder downloads the file to your browser's local download location (typically this is C:\Users\username\Downloads). To copy OpticStudio files to your personal storage drive or the Download Now folder, open Frame Explorer. Drag your files to these folders, or use the copy/paste buttons in the toolbar. After you save your work, click the gear icon in the lower-left corner of your session and select Power off. 5

6 Powering off immediately closes any running applications and terminates your instance. If you want to keep your session active and pick up where you left off later, use the Disconnect feature. Always save your work to your personal storage drive before powering off. Don t save files to the local drive of your session (such as the C: drive) because those files are not retained between sessions. Save everything to your personal storage drive or download the files from your session. After you ve saved your files, go to the menu at the top-right corner of the Launchpad and click Sign out to end your session. 6. Getting Started Using OpticStudio If you re new to OpticStudio, the best place to start is with the tutorials in the Getting Started Using OpticStudio guide. To open this guide, select the Help tab in OpticStudio and click Getting Started Using OpticStudio. In the navigation panel on the left, expand the Tutorials section to find nine step-by-step tutorials. These tutorials include several examples of how to use OpticStudio. We strongly recommend that new OpticStudio users take the time to work through them. After you ve completed the tutorials, here are some additional resources with more information about OpticStudio: OpticStudio Knowledgebase An indispensable resource for OpticStudio users that contains hundreds of articles, including topic-specific tutorials, answers to frequently asked questions, and helpful examples. It s structured into categories and has a powerful search engine to help you easily find articles of interest. Help files Accessible by clicking the Help? icons in the OpticStudio user interface. Help content is contextsensitive, meaning you receive information specific to the analysis or tool in current use. OpticStudio sample files Demonstrate how to set up different types of optical systems and can be accessed by clicking File > Open and browsing to P:\Zemax\Samples. OpticStudio training courses Help expand your optical and illumination design capabilities, whether you re a new or well-established optics professional. Training courses are conducted by our exceptional team of optical engineers, with years of experience designing real-world optical systems. 6
