5 1. Introduction 1.1. Overview This document will depict the usage of UART functions supplied by SIM5XXX. User can get useful information about the SIM5XXX s UART function quickly through this document. SIM5XXX UART can work in two modes: Standard mode. Null mode (default mode) Seven UART pins: RX, TX, RI, DCD, DTR, RFR, CTS. WARNING: SIM5218 only support the function addressed in chapter References [1] SIMCOM_SIM5XXX_ATC_EN_Vx.xx.doc. Terms and Abbreviations For the purposes of the present document, the following abbreviations apply: AT ATtention; the two-character abbreviation is used to start a command line to be sent from TE/DTE to TA/DCE 2. UART mode function 2.1. Standard mode (7 lines mode) When UART working in standard mode, all of the UART pins must follow the standard RS232 protocol. User can not set the UART pins to other functions, meaning that AT+CGFUNC is invalid. Example: AT+CSUART=1 // set UART to work in standard mode OK AT+CGFUNC=10, 0 // to disable DCD function of DCD pin ERROR //invalid AT command 2.2. Null mode (3 lines mode) When UART working in NULL mode (the default mode), only RX and TX pins must follow the standard RS232 protocol. 7 3.1. CTS This pin can be used in these modes: GPIO/ISR/FLOW_CONTROL, one can use +CGFUNC to select a mode to use. In GPIO mode, one can use the pin by configuring the direction, setting the output value, and getting the input value. Example for GPIO mode: AT+CGFUNC=11, 0 //close the FLOW_CONTROL mode AT+CGDRT=33, 1 //set this pin to output AT+CGSETV=33, 1 //set this pin to high In ISR mode, one can use the pin by configuring the trigger condition. Example for ISR mode: AT+CGFUNC=11, 0 //close the FLOW_CONTROL mode AT+CGISR=33, 0, 1 //set gpio to ISR with high level trigger condition In FLOW_CONTROL mode, the function is the same as the pin in standard UART mode. Example for FLOW_CONTROL mode: AT+CGFUNC=11, 1 //enable the FLOW_CONTROL mode 3.2. RFR This pin can be used in these modes: GPIO/ISR/FLOW_CONTROL, one can use +CGFUNC to select a mode to use. In GPIO mode, one can use the pin by configuring the direction, setting the output value, and getting the input value. 8 In GPIO mode, one can use the pin by configuring the direction, setting the output value, and getting the input value. Example for GPIO mode: AT+CGFUNC=3, 0 //close the WAKEUP_HOST mode AT+CGFUNC=17, 0 //close the EVENT_INDICATOR mode AT+CGDRT=37, 1 //set this pin to output AT+CGSETV=37, 1 //set this pin to high In ISR mode, one can use the pin by configuring the trigger condition. Example for ISR mode: AT+CGFUNC=3, 0 //close the WAKEUP_HOST mode AT+CGFUNC=17, 0 //close the EVENT_INDICATOR mode AT+CGISR=36, 0, 1 //set this pin to ISR with high level trigger condition In WAKEUPUP_HOST mode, this pin will be pulled down when some given conditions (incoming call, SMS, URC) are satisfied. One can use this function to wake up one s host device. Example for WAKEUP_HOST mode: AT+CGFUNC=3, 1 //enable the WAKEUP_HOST mode NOTE: 1. One must use +CFGRI to enable the RI indicating function for URC condition, otherwise RI pin has no change even if URC reported. 2. one needs to use +CRIRS to reset the RI pin to high after one s host device has been waken up. In EVENT_INDICATOR mode, this pin will output a low level pulse when some given conditions (incoming call, SMS, URC) are satisfied. Different conditions have different pulse width. Incoming call condition will output a low level till the call is connected or hang-up, SMS condition will output a 120ms low level pulse, and URC condition will output a 60ms low level pulse. Example for WAKEUP_HOST mode: AT+CGFUNC=18, 1 //enable the EVENT_INDICATOR mode NOTE: 1. One must use +CFGRI to enable the RI indicating function for URC condition, otherwise RI pin has no change even if URC reported. 2. One needs not to use +CRIRS to reset the RI pin to high, since SIMCOM module will reset it by itself DCD pin This pin can be used in these modes: GPIO/ISR/DCD, one can use +CGFUNC to select a mode to use In GPIO mode, one can use the pin by configuring the direction, setting the output value, SIM5XXX UART Application Note 7

Example for GPIO mode: AT+CGFUNC=10, 0 AT+CGDRT=36, 1 AT+CGSETV=36, 1 //close the DCD mode //set this pin to output //set this pin to high In ISR mode, one can use the pin by configuring the trigger condition. Example for ISR mode: AT+CGFUNC=10, 0 //select the GPIO mode AT+CGISR=36, 0, 1 //set this pin to ISR with high level trigger condition In DCD mode, the function is the same as the pin in standard UART mode. Example for DCD mode: AT+CGFUNC=10, 1 //enable the DCD mode 3.5. DTR pin This pin can be used in these modes: GPIO/ISR/WAKEUP_ME/ UART_ SLEEP_INDICATOR, one can use +CGFUNC to select a mode to use. In GPIO mode, one can use the pin by configuring the direction, setting the output value, and getting the input value. Example for GPIO mode: AT+CGFUNC=2, 0 //close the WAKEUP_ME mode AT+CGFUNC=18, 0 //close the UART_ SLEEP_INDICATOR mode AT+CGDRT=35, 1 //set this pin to output AT+CGSETV=35, 1 //set this pin to high In ISR mode, one can use the pin by configuring the trigger condition. Example for ISR mode: AT+CGFUNC=2, 0 //close the WAKEUP_ME mode AT+CGFUNC=18, 0 //close the UART_ SLEEP_INDICATOR mode AT+CGISR=36, 0, 1 //set this pin to ISR with high level trigger condition In WAKEUP_ME mode, this pin acts as an interrupt source, one can configure the trigger condition. Example for WAKEUP_ME mode: AT+CDTRISRMD=0, 1 //set high level trigger condition AT+CGFUNC=2, 1 //enable the WAKEUP_ME mode In UART_ SLEEP_INDICATOR mode, this pin is an indicator to request the SIMCOM module to sleep/wakeup the UART interface, please consult chapter 4 for more details. 4. UART sleep function SIM5XXX UART Application Note 8

10 There are two means to indicate UART to enter into sleep mode or wakeup from sleep mode RX pin as indicator Host device can use RX pin to request UART to enter into sleep mode or wakeup from sleep mode. UART will ready to enter into sleep mode if RX pin is pulled down. UART will ready to exit from sleep mode if RX pin is pulled up. Example: AT+CGFUNC=18, 0 //close the DTR SLEEP_UART_INDICATOR mode, //which will use RX pin as indicator NOTE: if one uses this mode as UART sleep indicator one must take into account the following case: During the whole UART sleep/wakeup process SIMCOM module will receive an extra dirty data: 0(since during the process RX will be pulled down and then pulled up some time later). SIMCOM module will ignore this data while UART is in command mode. But if in data mode SIMCOM module is helpless. So SIMCOM module supplies a command to mute this problem. Host device can use the command +CUARTWD to set a stable timer to let UART wake up completely, during the stable time UART will ignore any data received DTR pin as indicator Host device can use DTR pin to request UART to enter into sleep mode or wakeup from sleep mode. UART will ready to enter into sleep mode if DTR pin is pulled up for more than 2 seconds. UART will ready to exit from sleep mode if DTR pin is pulled down for more than 10ms. Example: AT+CGFUNC=18, 1 //enable DTR SLEEP_UART_INDICATOR mode. NOTE: 1. if DTR is pulled up for more than 100ms but less than 200ms, SIMCOM module will regard this event as a DATA/COMMAND switch condition (like +++). SIM5XXX UART Application Note 9
