1 Level 3 Computing Year 2 Lecturer: Phil Smith

2 Introduction This unit aims to enable you to develop the skills and understanding required to design and develop procedural programming applications. Irrespective of framework or delivery platform, the development of procedural code is still at the core of many commercial applications development projects. Event driven systems and object oriented platforms all use procedural code for the critical command content of their objects, events and listeners

3 Introduction This unit spans the whole year. 1 hour per week. Combined lecture and practical's. 3 assignments in your own time. 6 in class assessments. Assignment 1 around November P1, P2, M1 and D1 Assignment 2 around January P3, P4, M2 Assignment 3 around April P5, P6, M3, M4, D2

4 Learning Outcomes 1. Understand the features of procedural programming. 2. Be able to use the tools and techniques of a procedural language. 3. Be able to design procedural applications. 4. Be able to implement procedural applications.

5 Resources Lectures. Books (in lab). Books in LRC. Internet, you have internet access. Periodicals etc. WIKI Moodle

6 Environment Programming Language: Python Use Idle no IDE (as such) and pycharm? Why? 1. Easy to learn. 2. Quick to write. 3. No complicated IDE. 4. Able to cover all programming principles. 5. But! (see over)

7 Environment this unit is not just about the language, this is just syntax. It is about (learning outcomes again) the principles of programming, being able to design procedural programming solutions, implement the solutions (writing the code python), test the solutions. Python is good for procedural programming but it can also cater for OOP and EDP. Python is an OOP language.

8 Python Python is an interpreted language. Each statement is read and executed immediately by the python interpreter. This is an example of unmanaged code (not compiled). Javascript is another example of interpreted execution. VB.net, c, c++, C# are examples of managed code, the code must be compiled before it can be executed. It could be argued that managed code is faster to execute but slower to develop???

9 Environment Procedural programming is one of three programming paradigms. Can you name the other 2??

10 Environment Once you learn the principles of programming you can then skin it with any language you like. So this unit is much more than learning python! But we will need python to help us. Also Python is supplied on the Raspberry Pi. Hopefully you will all get the opportunity to implement your design to guide and drive an autonomous vehicle to follow a line.

11 Procedural programming So what is procedural programming? Procedural programming is a programming paradigm, derived from structured programming, based upon the concept of the procedure call. Procedures, also known as routines, subroutines, methods, or functions, simply contain a series of computational steps to be carried out. Any given procedure might be called at any point during a program's execution, including by other procedures or itself. Procedural programming is a list or set of instructions telling a computer what to do step by step and how to perform from the first code to the second code. Procedural programming languages include C, Go, Fortran, Pascal, Swift, and Python.

12 Procedural programming Procedural programming relies on you guessed it procedures, also known as routines or subroutines. A procedure contains a series of computational steps to be carried out. Procedural programming is also referred to as imperative programming. Procedural programming languages are also known as top down languages.

13 Procedural programming The most Popular Procedural programming language is probably C. We will be using Python. Procedural programming is used in event driven applications as well as in Object Oriented Programming (OOP). In fact it is present in virtually all types of programs regardless of the programming language used to write the code.

14 Programming What does a computer program do? At a very high level it: 1. Takes input from something or someone! 2. It does some form of processing of the input. 3. It writes to some form of output.

15 Procedural programming so a computer program does three main things. 1. It reads input. 2. It processes the input. 3. It write output. Input Process Output 4. All computer programs perform these three basic operations, including the operating system.

16 Procedural programming In procedural programing we list a set of steps which have to be executed in order to achieve something. e.g. step 1: Get Value1 input step 2: Get Value2 input step 3: Get Value3 input step 4: Sum=Value1+Value2+Value3 step 5: Average=Sum/3 step 6: Display Average Output Steps are completed in order Process Process This is a sequence.

17 Python Task Let us start to look at Python. On your PC type IDLE to start the Python shell program. We are going to look at input process output Now follow my lead
