1 Midterm No. 1 for V Wednesday, October 6, 2010 There are three sections. Each section is worth 35 points. The maximum score on the test is 105. Please remember to print your name clearly on every page of this test, as well as on the accompanying blue booklet. Please feel free to write answers both on this page and the test booklet. However, please make it clear in each case, so I know where to find your answer. Section 1: For each statement, indicate: (a) what will be printed to the screen; and (b) what is the value or output of the expression. Write NOTHING (in all capital letters) to indicate that there is nothing printed or that the expression has no value. Note that the equals sign =, which assigns a value to a variable, is assumed to have NOTHING for output as well. If the statement should produce an error: (a) write ERROR in the last column; and (b) put ERROR in the Print Out column, unless you expect something to print out before the error message. See the examples for clarification. On the appropriate line numbers in the table below the function, please list the errors (if any), along with possible corrections. In each case, a minimum number of errors is listed. You do not need to find more errors than that number. For example, if the description says to find three errors, you only need to find three, even if there are actually four or five errors. Sample 6: The function minus takes two numbers as input and subtracts the second from the first. There is only one error.

3 Question 12: This function takes three arguments: 1) a number from 1 to 30 representing a day in September corresponding to the user s most recent appointment at the hair stylist; 2) the color of dye that the stylist is to apply; and 3) The desired day in October the user wants for their next hair appointment. The program then makes a useful statement about the appointment. In print statements for the user: Sunday is assumed to be day of the week 1, Tuesday is 2,..... Saturday is 7. 4 Section 3: Write two functions as specified. Please write your function either in the space provided below or in a clearly labeled test booklet. Question 13: This program calculates the amount of fabric needed to create a sweater for a dog. For simplicity, the program calculates the amount of material required to make a hollow cylinder, based on some measurements of the dog. The height of the cylinder is the distance from the base of the neck to the base of the tail. The diameter is the height of the thickest portion of the dog s chest. The formula for the area of the surface of a cylinder is (height π diameter) + (2 π radius 2 ). The program should ask the user for the appropriate input and print the appropriate output in a way the user can understand. The function should return the total amount of fabric in square inches or square centimeters.

5 Question 14: Write a Function that: A. Asks the user to choose a number from 1 to 7, making it clear that 1 stands for Sunday, 2 for Monday, 3 for Tuesday,... 7 for Saturday. B. Ask the user to choose a number of days in the future. C. Have the system calculate which day of the week it will be that number of days in the future. D. Have the system print out the resulting new day of the week in a meaningful way. E. Return this same day number as the output of the function.
