Basic guide to Canon EOS C This guide is designed to take you through the basic and essential functions of the Canon C100 camcorder. Battery insertion Have the camera in the off position. The power switch is on the upper left hand side of the body as you look at the back of the camera. The battery can only be inserted one way. If force is used then damage can be made to the battery or camera. Insert the battery by sliding it in the direction of the arrow until it clicks into place. Battery removal Turn off the camera. Remove the battery by sliding the battery release lever forward and removing the battery as shown by the arrow below. While holding the lever down slide the battery to the right and out.
Turning camera on There are two modes. CAMERA for recording and MEDIA for playback. Turn the switch to CAMERA to switch on for recording or MEDIA for playback. The flip-out screen To open the LCD flip screen pull the bottom of the screen up and flip it over to the left.
Memory card There are two memory card slots, A and B. You can use A or B or both. A memory card is supplied with the camera. Check that it is inserted in the SD slot. This must always be returned with the camera to the stores. Insert or remove the memory card with the camera turned off. Menu and Joystick The 2 things you will use the most when navigating the Menu functions will be the MENU button and the JOYSTICK. Formatting the memory card and Camera Reset Before using the C100 it is good practice to reset the camera to its default set up. This eliminates any potential settings previously used and allows us to set the camera to our desired set up. In the menu select Other functions > Reset > All Settings Before using the memory card supplied you must format any material previously recorded. Any media still on the card at the start of your booking can be formatted.
In the menu select Other functions > Initialize Media > Select A or B and then press the joystick. Select OK and then press the joystick. Recorded Image Quality It is important that the video you record uses the correct settings. The settings can be found in the menu. Select Other Functions > System Frequency Choose 50Hz Select Other Functions > Frame Rate Choose either 50i (interlaced) or PF25 (Progressive) Setting the Black Balance Whenever the camera has had a master reset the black balance will need to be reset in order to calibrate the camera. Ensure the lens cap is attached before attempting a ABB. Select Camera Set Up > ABB Preparing the Camera for Recording
Shutter Speed You can change the shutter speed using the joystick, it appears as a fraction. Generally you will set this to 1/50 (180 ) unless there s a desired effect you are trying to achieve by lowering it. Changing the shutter speed does changed your exposure but it will effect the movement in your image, so if you are unsure, stick to 1/50. ISO Press the joystick once and then navigate to ISO using the joystick. The native ISO that will give you the best quality image is 850, this will appear in brackets. The higher you set your ISO the brighter your image will be. However, this is an artificial way of adding light so you start to see noise in the image. Iris / Aperture PUSH and HOLD AUTO IRIS Only for Zoom lenses Button number 12, on the left-hand side of the camera that provides momentary automatic aperture. This is a good setting to use to test the f stop the camera thinks should be used. Manual Iris set up Zoom Lens To manually adjust the Iris / aperture use the dial control on the hand grip (only available on Zoom lenses) Manual Iris set up Prime Lens To manually adjust the Iris / aperture turn the lens ring accordingly.
Focus Automatic Only available on the Zoom lens Continuous AF With compatible lenses that camera can be put into (AF) auto focus mode. One-shot AF With the lens switch set to AF, using the ONE-SHOT AF, button 15, will focus the camera automatically. Manual When using Zoom or Prime Lens To manually focus the camera turn the focus ring on the lens. White balance
One function which should never be left in automatic is the camera's white balance. To white balance the C100 press the WHITE BALANCE button. You can choose: Custom Preset Set a colour temperature using Kelvin (This is recommended) Auto Colour Temperature Setting Press the WB button The white balance mode will be selected Push the Joystick up/down to select the K icon Press the button Push the to set. Joystick up/down to change the colour temperature value and then press the joystick Colour Temperature Chart in Kelvin
Audio Levels
You can record sound using the built-in mics. A useful tip for the internal mic is the low cut feature. Select Audio Input > Int Mic Low Cut > Then LC1 or LC2. LC1 - Will remove low frequencies and let high frequencies through LC2 Good to use in Windy conditions or connect external mics through the XLR inputs held with the clamp Use the AUDIO IN switches to select internal or external mics
Adjust the level controls if the audio is too loud or quiet. The audio level indicators on the flip-out screen should peek at 2/3rds of their full scale. Making and playing-back a test recording It is good practice to make a test recording to check that the camera works satisfactorily. Once you have made a test recording play it back by turning the switch to MEDIA pressing the PLAY button. Alternatively you can stay in camera mode and press button 6 index for an instant playback of the last shot recorded.
The Play button is on the body of the camera beside the flip-out screen. You can also use the joystick to navigate the footage. Useful menu settings Guide Frame There are a few grids available that may be helpful. This setting enables a grid to be displayed on the flip-out display which is helpful for framing shots. Select LCD/VF Setup > Markers Then select the markers you wish to display. To see the markers LCD/VF Setup > Markers >Enable > ON Zebra Bars This setting enables zebra bars to be displayed on the flip-out display, which will indicate where the picture is being over exposed. The zebra bars are not recorded. Select LCD/VF Setup > Select (under ZEBRA) Choose your desired zebra option. Using the Focus Assistance Functions
Peaking In order to focus more accurately, you can use two focus assistance functions peaking, which creates a clearer contrast by emphasizing the outlines of the subject, and magnification, which enlarges the image on the screen. You can use both functions simultaneously for greater effect. Select LCD/VF Setup > Peaking Open the submenu to select the peaking level and change the colour. We recommend you set the peaking colour to red Magnification Press the MAGN. button. If necessary, use the joystick to move around the orange frame and check other parts of the image. Set the focus mode switch on the lens to MF in advance. You can move the orange frame 5steps vertically or horizontally. Press the CANCEL button to return the magnification frame to the center position. Press the MAGN. button again to cancel the magnification. Setting the Time code This setting enables you to set the TC. I would suggest using time of day and in free run mode. Good to use for logging shots and on multi camera shoots. Select Timecode > Mode > Preset Timecode > Run > Free Run Setting > Set to time of day Assigning Buttons
This setting enables you to assign your shortcuts. The numbers relate to the back of the camera next to the view finder. Select Other Functions > Assign Button > I would suggest setting Number 1 to PHOTO Number 3 to HEADPHONE + Number 6 to HEADPHONE - Editing your material Before you edit your material you need to create a back up copy. To follow this procedure you will need a Hard Drive, which has enough free space to store all your camera card s media. 1.As soon as you have finished recording on a camera card copy the entire camera card s content to an external Hard Drive. Store each card s content in a separate folder, each with a sensible name: Card 1 Date, Card 2 Date etc. example Card Store your back-up drive in a safe location, ideally not in the same room or even the same building as you are editing in. Never use the back-up drive to import from or edit from, unless you have lost your other copies. 3.Using the original camera card copy the entire card s content to an external Hard Drive, via the icon on the Macs s desktop. (If you want to be able to use your material in more than one edit suite then store your material on your own Hard Drive; NOT the Edit suite drives) 4.Import / Link your media (To view media instantly please use LINK button when in Avid media composer) 5.Using your editing application, check that you have access to all your material. 6.When, and only when, you know you have access to all your material should
you reformat the camera card. When it is safe to do so it would be helpful to reformat the camera's media card before returning to the Media School store. Please tell Elly or Graham that you have reformatted the drive to prevent her from having to do so.
