2 ANSI Standards The American National Standards Institute (ANSI) is a private, non-profit organization that administers and coordinate the U.S. voluntary standardization and conformity assessment system. In order to maintain ANSI accreditation, a manufacturer must adhere to a set of requirements or procedures known as the ANSI Essential Requirements. They are also responsible for writing the voluntary industry standards for OSHA compliance. OSHA does not approve products, but they provide the criteria necessary to meet ANSI standards. NIOSH 42CFR84 Respirators (reference page 24) MUTCD Requirements MUTCD, the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices defines, the standards used by traffic engineers and project managers nation-wide to install and maintain traffic control devices on streets and highways. NCHRP-350 As required by the Federal Highway Administration (FWHA), work zone traffic control devices must be crash worthy and qualify as such according to the testing and acceptance guidelines of the National Cooperative Highway Research Program Report 350 (NCHRP-350). ANSI-ISEA STANDARD: This standard specifies minimum amounts of retroreflective materials, colors and placement of materials, for items used to enhance the visibility and safety of workers. Performance Class guidelines are identified with corresponding recommendations for selection based on worker risk hazards, such as complex backgrounds, vehicular traffic and speeds encountered. See abbreviated definitions below: Class 1 - Provides the minimum amount of required material to differentiate the wearer from the work environment. Class 2 - Provides superior visibility for wearers by the additional coverage of the torso, and is more conspicuous than Performance Class 1. Class 3 - While the type of garment and the size of the wearer dictate the area of clothing, it is the intention of this standard for Performance Class 3 to offer greater visibility to the wearer in both complex backgrounds and through a full range of body movements. Additionally, visibility is enhanced beyond Performance Class 2 by the enhancement of background and reflective materials to the arms and/or legs. Regardless of the area of materials used, a sleeveless garment or vest alone shall not be considered Performance Class 3. The higher the base curve, the greater the sweep of the spectacle. This provides more wrap-around protection, peripheral vision and eliminates the need for side shields. uv radiation biologic effects: To assess the effect of ultraviolet radiation (UV) on the human eye, the following photo biologic scheme divides the UV spectrum into three bands or regions: UV-A ( nm): Unfiltered exposure to high levels (>200J/cm2) of radiation may produce severe reactions to all layers of the cornea. UV-B ( nm): Unfiltered exposure to twice the threshold of radiant exposure (2 x HL*) may produce permanent cataracts. 68 WELDING Auto-Darkening Features and selection chart: Delay Adjustment: controls the amount of time the lens will stay dark, before transitioning back to the light state, after you have stopped the arc. This is beneficial when making several consecutive welds in the same area and the light state is not necessary to get set for the next weld. The higher the number, the longer the unit will stay dark after the arc before transitioning to the light state. Sensitivity Adjustment: allows user to fine tune the unit depending on ambient light (such as the sun, overhead lighting or other welders in close proximity) or arc intensity. This feature allows low amp, DC TIG welding that other units cannot do. The higher the number, the more sensitive the unit will be to ambient light or arc intensity, thereby transitioning to dark with a less intense light. Solar Battery Life Extender: solar panel that extends the welding hours provided by a set of batteries, thus decreasing battery replacement costs and downtime Intellisense : allows the unit to detect weld less than 5 amps. This feature is useful for those who are performing low-amperage welds, primarily low-amp TIG welding. 3N1: provides three modes of operation for the lens: grind (shade 3), weld (shades 9-12) and oxyfuel gas cutting (shade 5). This allows the welder the ability to wear one hood for every welding process, thus eliminating downtime. HTLS Lightstate: maintains a clear state of 3.75, the clearest PI filter available. The HTLS Lightstate provides good color and visibility for hood-down set-up in environments with low ambient light. Independent Redundant Sensors: in units of two or more sensors, if one sensor is blocked or damaged, the unit s performance will not be compromised. Therefore, welders can work in tight areas, where a sensor may be blocked, without any interruptions. Auto-Off: battery maximizing feature that manually shuts-down the unit when not in use or 20 minutes after the last arc is struck. ClimaSensor Technology: tests the ambient air temperature three times per minute and automatically adjusts the lens accordingly to ensure a true shade when welding. ClimaSensor technology is useful to those who are welding in extremely hot or cold environments. EMI Coating: a special coating applied to the casing of the unit to protect the electronics against extreme electromagnetic interference. This coating is essential for welders who generate higher than normal electromagnetic interference, such as TIG welding, particularly AC TIG, and other alternating current welding applications, or are in an environment with a concentration of this interference. Low Voltage Indicator: when lit, alerts the welder to change the batteries in their ADF. Replacement batteries must be alkaline batteries for optimal performance. Huntsman recommends the same battery brand as what originally came with the product to ensure a proper fit and connection with the unit.
