REGULATION UN/ECE 48 REGULATION UN/ECE 112 Above mentioned european regulations are now-a-days detailing all beams specs on the market and can be assembled on all vehicles: A) HALOGEN BEAM B) XENO BEAM BiXENO BEAM C) LED BEAM BiLED BEAM New headlight technology on the market is day by day developing. Now-a-days last evolution entering the market stronger and stronger is LED beams LED advantages are: a) Reduced energy consumption; b) Long lasting life c) High visibility d) Similarity to solar light Beams manufacturers are right now trying to reduce production costs to ensure a large market penetration in the next 5 years
Vehicle drivers realize how complicated new beam systems are just when these should be replaced. Beams have been improved first of all to grant a wider and better vision during day and night as driving. Wider & better vision during day and night driving These targets have been achieved using different type of light than Halogen, such as XENO or LED and adding also additional function such as : AFS (Adaptive Frontlighting System), IS (Infrared System) and DRL (Daytime Running Light)
Different type of beam light Halogen Halogen light sources have been used for vehicle lights and in both reflection and projection systems for all other major automotive lighting functions since the early 1960s. Halogen bulbs last longer than simple filament bulbs and are more efficient. These types of lights can produce both high and low beams with just one projection module, mechanically switching back and forth via a shutter. In the higher position, the shutter creates the specific cut-off line for the low beam lights. When it is lowered, the high beam is released. Such a shuttering system prevent incoming driver on the other side to be hurt by the light of opposite vehicle.
Different type of beam light Xeno: This technology has been introduced early 1990ies and such a beam can produce a 200% more light in comparison with conventional halogen beam. The result is the effective illumination of the road and the roadside, with a light similar to that which we see during the day. Then match the natural condition of the human eye, making driving safer and more relaxing. The Xenon lamps require about a third less energy compared to the corresponding halogen and their life cycle almost reaches the lifetime of the vehicle. Their use is made both for applications high and low beam, with projection or reflection: an electromagnetic actuator can be used to move a device and switch from low beam to high beam (principle of the projection system) or can also be activated by a small movement of the discharge lamp in the reflector (the principle of reflection system). To prevent other drivers from being dazzled, Xenon headlamps are equipped with an integrated automatic leveling system adjusting headlamps according to different load situations. the Xenon headlamps must be equipped with cleaning system ensuring lenses always cleaning to always get uniformity in the distribution of light. The purpose is to prevent the effect satin lamp" made of a film of dirt, causing therefore a phenomenon of diffused light and, therefore, no longer properly directed.
Different type of beam light LED: with the recent introduction of full- LED headlights (Audi R8 first), all the functions of a projector have been realized for the first time with LED technology ( low beam, high beam, indicators, parking lights and DRL). LED technology advantages are numerous: temperature of the light almost reaches same quality of daylight, as well as bring considerable advantages in terms of space occupied inside the optical and a considerable improvement from aesthetic point of view. Moreover, the LEDs have a life cycle extremely high, higher than that of the car itself, and remarkably reduced energy consumption. The most immediate consequences of the latter factor is the reduction of fuel consumption and emissions of carbon dioxide, aspects of particular importance with the introduction of the Daytime Running Light (DRL) : DRL with LED technology requires 14 W of energy, while the consumption of conventional daylight illumination ( sidelights and dipped beam ) is equal to 300 W. Matrix beam works with vehicle CPU adjusting light in connection with environmental conditions, obstable on the way. All analisys are made by the camera installed on the car, such a camera communicates with the CPU to activate much/less beam parts to grant illumination accordingly
DRL (Daytime Running Light) AFS (Adaptive Frontlighting System) Different added beam and function on beam light These are just few of the actual options on cars now-adays, just to complete the list see below: Adaptive headlamp Automatic highbeam headlamp CCD camera Infrared radiation Intelligent car Night vision Active infrared night vision Pedestrian Pedestrian detection Thermographic camera
Car manufacturer started already using Xeno and LED technology with additional function to increase safety level in vehicle driving Mercedes-Benz In late-2005, Mercedes-Benz introduced their Night View Assist system on the redesigned S-class. It was the first system to use the instrument cluster's LCD as a display. In 2009, Mercedes added a pedestrian detection function calling the revised system Night View Assist Plus and offered it on the redesigned E-class and refreshed S-class, however, the E- class uses the navigation screen's display. For model year 2014, S-class with Night Vision Assist Plus will also have animal detection. To give further warning, the Nigh View Assist PLUS system is coupled to the car s spotlight function which is able to focus a beam of light onto the pedestrian or animal while flashing them repeatedly. Toyota Night View system on the 2003 Lexus LX 470; in 2002, Toyota introduced the first production automotive active night vision system or Night View on the Lexus LX 470 and Landcruiser Cygnus. This system uses the headlight projectors emitting near infrared light aimed like the car's high beam headlights and a CCD camera then captures that reflected radiation, this signal is then processed by computer which produces a black-and-white image which is projected on the lower section of the windshield] In 2008 Toyota added a feature to the Crown Hybrid which highlights pedestrians and presents them in a box on an LCD display in front of the driver, this was the first pedestrian detection feature for an active system. Audi The Night Vision Assistant was introduced in 2010 on the Audi A8. It uses a thermal imaging camera behind the four rings at the front of the car which can "see" 300 meters (984 ft) ahead. The display in the instrument cluster highlights humans with yellow markings. More importantly, the computer can determine if the person on the road moves in a way that could lead to a collision with the car. In that case the pedestrian is being marked in red color and the driver of the car receives an audible warning.
Car manufacturer started already using Xeno and LED technology with additional function to increase safety level in vehicle driving BMW In fall 2005, BMW introduced BMW Night Vision on the 7-series. This system processes far infrared radiation, which minimizes non-essential information placing a greater emphasis on pedestrians and animals, allows for a range of 300 meters or nearly 1,000 feet, and avoids "dazzle" from headlights, road lights and similar intense light sources. In the fall of 2008, on the redesigned 7-series, BMW added a pedestrian detection system which flashes a caution symbol on the navigation/information screen and head-up-display when it detects pedestrians. For model year 2013, BMW Night Vision added animal detection with Dynamic Light Spot feature for the 7-series. As soon as the remote infrared detects pedestrians or larger animals on course for collision in the dark, the system directs two separately controlled Dynamic Light Spots at them without creating an unpleasant glare. In the event of an acute risk, an acoustic warning signal is also sounded and the brakes are set to maximum standby. For the model year 2014, BMW 5- series will also have these new features General Motors In 2000, General Motors introduced Night Vision on the Cadillac Deville which became the first vehicle sold with such a system, however it was discontinued in 2004.This system was developed with Raytheon and worked by using an infrared sensing camera mounted behind the vehicle's grille. Infrared radiation is picked up by the sensor, processed by computer and then displayed on the windshield using a head-up display. Information is displayed as a black and white image with warmer objects in white, while cooler objects appear black. Honda In the fall of 2004, Honda introduced the redesigned Legend with an optional Intelligent Night Vision system. This system detected far infrared radiation and was also the first system to offer pedestrian detection. The pedestrian detection feature alerted the driver with an audio warning and visually enclosed the pedestrian in a box on the display which was presented via head-up display.
CHECKING A HEADLIGHT Past and additional test on new product technology LOW BEAM AND HIGH BEAM Traditional mechanical check: h-h= horizontal deviation v-v= vertical deviation LOW BEAM AND HIGH BEAM Traditional intensity check: 75L= Low beamlight intensity check 75R= low beam light intensity check HV= high beam light intensity check
CHECKING A HEADLIGHT Past and additional test on new product technology XENON - LED MECHANICAL POSITION ADDITIONAL CHECK: Adding all function above described (AFS-DRL-DLA, etc ) nowit is extremely important that on horizontal position to check that torsion does not occur: - rolling angle Cut off line must be within specific limits to grant light to be enough to illuminate the road - cut off line Yaw and cutt off grant that light projection/reflection are within specific limits - yaw angle EUROPEAN REGULATION 15 USA REGULATION 45
CHECKING A HEADLIGHT Past and additional test on new product technology XENON - LED LIGHT INTENSITY CHECK: New generation headlight can respect traditional low beam/ high beam shape therefore it always necessary to check traditional hot spot (50L/R)) but it is becoming more and more frequent that to check light intensntity headlight beam tester should detect a different area or accuracy grade achieves higher resolution. Last generation LED are using a different shape and to double check that hot position is within the limits, analisys to be done indìcludes different range of check.
CHECKING A HEADLIGHT New range of headlight beam testers All above mentioned additional functions on beam assembly are almost connected to the car CPU and it is necessary to be EOBD connected to release the command that allows operator to adjust the beam inclination; we could say that now the healight beam tester is moving to a «diagnostic dimension»: Having a solid and stud structure and a performing elelctronic core ensure a long lasting investiment because additional beam software evolution can be downloaded through Tecnolux portal and updated directly on the unit. Tecnolux enlarged its range with two new electronic solutions: Electronic board CTF5: equipped with 12 photodiodes placed on a specific position of the aiming screen to grant all known readings required on the market to adjust new generation vehicles beams. In the future such a unit can be updated till the time diodes position will cover needed areas to be detected Electronic board CTF6: equipped CCD camera, unit works screening the spectrum of the light and reducing the light to a pixel analysis; a specific software developed on photometric evaluation detects all points and reconduct algorithm to obtain specific reading. CCD Camera is the future because as a diagnostic tool, unit could be updated with a sw download
