This system has been put together from E-blocks to facilitate rapid access to mobile telephony technology.

The Mobile communications system consists of several E- blocks boards which connect together using D-type connectors to form a mobile telephone that can be used for text messaging.

This system has been put together from E-blocks to facilitate rapid access to mobile telephony technology. This is particularly relevant to students who find learning about electronics within a mobile phone context highly motivating. The Mobile communications system consists of several E- blocks boards which connect together using D-type connectors to form a mobile telephone that can be used for text messaging. Additional E-blocks can be connected to this core system to make it applicable to individual applications: for example the addition of a ph sensor can be used to simulate the use of telemetry in water quality monitoring stations. The mobile communications system is controlled by a 16F877 PICmicro microcontroller. Programs for this microcontroller can be written in a variety of languages including Assembly, C and flow charts. Flow chart programming is well supported using Flowcode and prewritten high level flow chart routines have been written to allow designs using the Mobile communications system to be assembled in a matter of hours. The mobile phone is supplied in rugged plastic trays for convenient storage and safety. Flowchart programming using Flowcode facilitates rapid development of systems using mobile phone technology. The use of Flowcode for mobile communications technology is well supported with a teachers workbook (including student tasks) and pre-written high level routines for controlling all parts of the system. This also includes several working programs. Two versions of this product are available for operation in different territories: for regions that operate in the 850/1900MHz band (including North America) and EB543 for regions that operate in the 900/1800MHZ band (including Europe). 2 Optional extensions: This product is supplied with a single user version of Flowcode. This product can also be programmed in either C or Assembly which can be ordered as extras: Assembly for PICmicro microcontrollers C for PICmicro microcontrollers A large range of additional sensors is also available. Learning objectives The learning objectives for this product are as follows: Fundamentals of PICmicro programming Fundamentals of flow chart programming Understanding construction of mobile telephone systems Simple text messaging systems Keyboard and display control AT command structure used in mobile communication systems Setting up a voice communication system using AT commands Mobile phone telemetry using sensors Learning resources This product is shipped with a teacher s guide that includes information on the mobile phone system and outline exercises for students. Specifically it includes: An introduction to teaching electronics using mobile phone technology Information on setting up the mobile phone Exercise 1 sending a basic text message Exercise 2 sending a message under certain conditions Exercise 3 mobile telemetry acid detection in a river Exercise 4 Message texting system Using AT commands To carry out these objectives students will need to undertake a programme of study in programming microcontrollers using Flow charts. To support this the Flowcode CD ROM includes a large number of sample programs, and a full HTML course in flow chart programming of PICmicros. The teacher s guide includes additional exercises and ideas for assessment. Further learning opportunities The solution is supplied with additional E-blocks for circuit prototyping and development. These can be used to develop custom solutions and projects based on mobile phone technology. For C and Assembly users the GSM module is supplied with a 240 page manual which allows the module to be used for advanced features that your mobile service provider may supply including data transmission. Sample programs To assist in getting the mobile phone working, and to check that the system is operating correctly, two sample programs- written in Flowcode are available to use as starting templates/solutions to these problems:

3 Tutorial program Phone_01.fcf This program shows how you can use Flowcode to send a simple text message. This program consists of four top-level icons Flowcode icons: declare array contents for the phone number, declare array contents for the message, initialise the GSM modem, and send the message. Tutorial program Phone_02.fcf This program is an advanced program that uses the keypad to enter the number and message and then sends a text message. This program is not explained in any detail: You should use this as a task to set for advanced students and this is the answer to the task.

4 Technical specification EB118 is a flexible technical education solution designed to give an insight into the operation of mobile phones. The kit is comprised of a number of circuit boards that can be snapped together to form a fully functioning mobile phone for full voice, and text communications. The kit can be further expanded into a mobile telemetry unit by the addition of additional sensors. The kit is based on a 16F877 PICmicro device and a full suite of software is supplied which allows the system to be programmed using flow charts. This is backed up by a full online course as well as teachers notes which allow teachers to construct tasks for their students. Optional language packs for programming the unit in C and assembler are also available.
