3 2. General information The board allows text and graphics to be displayed on a graphical display. The board comes complete with an intelligent graphics controller chip, which handles all of the communications between the board and the display. The controller chip is connected to the E-blocks D-type connector in the form of a UART so commands can be sent from the host microcontroller to the display. The board also features an audio output and a micro SD card socket to allow you to take screen dumps, display photos, animations or stream audio. 1. Connections The patch system on the board is used to allow the onboard signals to be connected through to any of the 8 digital channels or through to another board or port. 5 4. Testing This Product The following instructions describe the test procedure for the EB D Picaso Touchscreen Display board. 1. System Setup Multi-programmer board (EB-006) with: EB006 Options Power supply PICmicro device SW1 (Fast/Slow) SW2 (RC/Xtal) Xtal frequency Port A Port B Port C Port D Port E Test program Setting External, 14V 16F877A Don t care Xtal MHz EB004 LED Board EB076 4D Goldelox Display EB076.HEX 2. Test procedure Connect EB076 (4D Picaso Touchscreen Display board) to PORTC of the Multiprogrammer. Connect EB004 (LED board) to PORTB of the Multiprogrammer. Ensure EB076 jumper settings are in the B position. Connect a wire from the +V screw terminal of the Multi-programmer to 5V terminal of 4D Display board. Connect USB cable to computer and EB006. Ensure 13.5V power supply is working correctly and connect to EB006. Open PPP. In PPP open file EB076.HEX. In PPP click on Send To PICmicro icon. A pop up window will inform you of status. If status is ok a Program Sent And Verified window will be observed on the screen. The LED board will flash at 1 second intervals signifying the program on the EB006 is running correctly. The display should display a plain yellow background Touching the screen should draw a blue circle Dragging your finger across the screen should draw a blue line made up of circles. If the LEDs are flashing at the 1 second rate and the 4D display is displaying the yellow background with blue lines where the display has been touched then the board has passed the test routine. 6 5. Circuit Description The EB076 4D Picaso Touchscreen Display circuit can be observed in Appendix1. 1. Module Commands The EB076 board supports 4D display modules using the Picaso type controller chip. The displays are controlled by issuing byte commands using a serial UART connection from the host microcontroller. To allow the UART connection to work you first have to send out an auto baud command to allow the module to startup. The UART baud rate must be set to 9600 bps in your program. Auto Baud Command : UARTSendByte 0x55 UARTReceive 0x06 = OK Here is an example command to clear the display. Clear Display : UARTSendByte 0x45 UARTReceive 0x06 = OK, 0x15 = Not OK For a complete list of commands please refer to the 4D Systems Picaso command datasheet. 2. The SD Interface The SD card interface is again controlled by passing commands over the UART to the 4D systems module which then performs actions on the SD card. Functions available include dumping the display to the card, recalling photos or images from the card to the display, scripts to output objects to the display, audio streaming and raw file read/write access V operation The E-block can operate with 5V and 3.3V systems but the voltage connected to the screw terminal must be 5V. Voltages greater then 5V on either the screw terminals or the signal connections will cause irreversible damage to the module. 4. Expansion Bus (no fit) The 4D Picaso Touchscreen module also features a 16-bit expansion port which has been made available underneath the module on the E-block PCB. The expansion port is controlled or sampled by sending commands to the display module using the UART data connection. Copyright 2011 Matrix Multimedia Limited 6
