5 Aton_C29_EN.book Page 3 Monday, June 22, :04 PM 1 Important Safety Instructions Emergency Calls Your Aton C29 has been designed to allow emergency calls to be made in the event of a mains failure. To make a call: 1. Pick up the handset 2. Dial the required number 3. Have your conversation 4. Hang up Note Although this backup function is available for outgoing calls, the ability to receive incoming calls during a mains power failure cannot be guaranteed. Important Safety Instructions Safety Precautions Warning Read the safety precautions and the user guide before use. Explain their contents and the potential hazards associated with using the telephone to your children.! Do not expose the telephone to humidity or any types of liquid. To avoid the risk of electrocution, do not open the telephone.! This telephone should not be used in areas where there is a risk of explosion or gas leaks. There is a slight possibility that this telephone may be damaged by electrical storms. We therefore recommend unplugging the telephone from the line during thunderstorms.! Your telephone may interfere with other electrical equipment such as televisions, radios, radio alarms or computers if placed too close to them. We recommend keeping it at least a meter away from such equipment.! To clean the product, use a damp (not wet) cloth or antistatic wipe. Never use a dry cloth as this may cause a static shock.! Never spray cleaning fluid directly onto the telephone. 3

It must be taken to a point of sale or central collection point for electronic and electrical devices in accordance with the Swiss Ordinance on the Return, Taking Back and Disposal of Electrical and Electronic Appliances (ORDEA). The individual materials are recyclable as indicated. By reutilising, recycling or re-using them in any other form, you are making a major contribution towards environmental protection. Note Not all of the functions described in this user guide are available in all countries. CLIP (Calling Line Identification Presentation), SMS (Short Message Services), etc. are dependent on the network provider. 2 First steps Before starting to use the phone, read through this section to help you set up the phone correctly. 2.1 Check the package contents! 1 telephone base unit! 1 handset with handset cord! 1 adaptor with power cord! 1 telephone line cord with Swiss connector! 1 User Guide! 2 etiquettes for one touch keys! 1 plastic cover for one touch keys Note Carefully remove all of the contents from the package. If there is any visible damage, or any of the contents are missing, do not attempt to operate this equipment. 4

7 Aton_C29_EN.book Page 5 Monday, June 22, :04 PM 2.2 Setting up the telephone unit! Set up the telephone on a flat, non-slip surface.! The phone s feet do not usually leave any marks on surfaces. However, due to the multitude of different varnishes and polishes used on today s furnishings, the occurrence of marks on the surfaces cannot be completely ruled out. 2.3 Connecting the telephone unit 1. Plug one end of the handset cord into the handset socket and the other end into the socket on the underside of the base unit marked with 2. Plug one end of the telephone line cord into the socket on the underside of the base unit marked with and the other end into the telephone wall socket. 3. Plug the AC adaptor into the socket on the underside of the base unit marked with and the other end into the wall outlet. 4. Switch on the power to power up the phone. First steps 2.4 Useful tips for using this manual Step-by-step instructions In this manual, step-by-step instructions for accessing the phone functions are condensed into the following format: Press P ) Phone Setting ) Date/Time The arrow ) means: Use the! and " keys to scroll to a menu or option and then press e. Therefore, the above example expanded in detail is as follows: 1. Press P. 2. Press! or " until the display screen shows the Phone Setting menu. 3. Press e to select the menu. 4. Press! or " until display screen shows the Date/Time option. 5. Press e to select the option. 5

After timeout, the phone will return to idle mode without saving any data. To exit from menu setting mode, press Y Entering or editing numbers When you are prompted to enter or edit numbers: 1. Press! or " to choose the slot where you want to input a digit. 2. Press the number keys to enter a digit or press X to remove the preceding digit Entering or editing names When you are prompted to enter or edit a name: 1. Press! or " to choose the slot where you want to enter a letter. 2. Press the number keys corresponding to the letters you want to enter or press X to remove the preceding letter. 3 About the phone 3.1 Key features of the phone! Display: 3 lines, 15 characters! 4 Menu languages: English, German, French and Italian! Memories: 5 memory keys and a phonebook with up to 50 entries! Call duration display (appears automatically for a few seconds during each call)! Caller list (incoming, missed) with 30 entries! The call is picked up and you can begin phone conversation. Tip If caller ID is available, the caller s number will be displayed on the screen. If the caller s number matches the last 6 digits of a number stored in the Phonebook or Direct Memory, the screen will show the caller s name. 4.2 Make a call There are several ways to make a phone call Manual dialling Pick up the handset or press J (for handsfree operation) and dial the number you want to call. 9

Note To add a pause after any dialled digit, press M (e.g. for PABX access or to control external functions) Manual pre-dialling Enter the number that you want to call, then pick up the handset or press J (for handsfree operation). The number is dialled a few seconds after the last key press Automatic dial from Direct Memory A number that is stored in Direct Memory can be automatically dialled. Press a Direct Memory key. OR Pick up the handset or press J (for handsfree operation) and press a Direct Memory key. The number is automatically dialled out Automatic dial from Phonebook A number that is stored in the Phonebook can be automatically dialled. See 5.1 Review Phonebook Entry and Call a Phonebook Entry for details Automatic dial from SMS A number can be automatically dialled from SMS entries. The call is ended. 4.4 Recall This option generates a Flash signal. When you press d, it sends a signal to the telephone exchange to access the different modes of operation. For example, it provides you with a quick way to obtain a new dial tone after completing a call. 1. During a call, press d. The current call is ended. The screen shows R. 2. Dial a number or press a Direct Memory button that has a stored number. A new call is made. Calls Tip If an empty Direct Memory button is pressed, you will be prompted to store a new number. See Manually add a Direct Memory for details. See 12.4 Recall Time on how to change the Recall time. 4.5 Redial List This option lets you review and quickly dial a number that you had previously dialled. The redial memory stores the last 5 dialled numbers with 24 digits for each number. If the number is over 24 digits long, the first 24 digits will be stored to memory Review Redial List 1. Press! or " to select Store to Book. 4. Press e. 5. You will be prompted to edit the number. When done, press e to save it. 6. You will be prompted to edit the name. When done, press e to save it. The entry is stored in the Phonebook Delete a Redial entry 1. Press M ) Select the entry 2. Press X. The display screen shows Delete?. 3. Press e to delete the entry or Y to cancel. 4.6 Caller List The Caller List records the last 30 entries of the incoming calls. This option lets you review and quickly dial a number that called you previously Review Caller List 1. Press v with the handset lifted or on hook. 2. Press! or " to scroll through the list. 12

Or Turn on the handsfree in On-hook mode, and dial the number after 3 seconds Store a Caller List entry to the Phonebook Calls 4. Press e. 5. You will be prompted to edit the number. When done, press e to save it. 6. You will be prompted to edit the name. When done, press e to save it. The entry is stored in the Phonebook Delete a Caller List entry 1. Press v ) Select the entry 2. Press[X. The display screen shows Delete?. 3. Press e to delete the entry or Y to cancel. 4.7 Call the COMBOX Press and hold 1 for more than 2 seconds. Tip For more information about the COMBOX, see 13 COMBOX Settings. 1. Press v ) Select the entry The screen shows Dial. 3. Press! or " to select Store to Book. 13

16 Aton_C29_EN.book Page 14 Monday, June 22, :04 PM Phonebook 5 Phonebook This section tells you how to use the Phonebook. The phone can store up to 50 phonebook entries. Each memory can store numbers with up to 24 digits and names with up to 20 characters. Press u to open the Phonebook options. 5.1 Review Phonebook Entry This option lets you view the names/numbers saved in the Phonebook. 1. Press u ) Review 2. Press! or " to scroll through the list. OR Enter a letter using the number keys to go directly to the first entry that begins with that letter Call a Phonebook Entry 1. Press u ) Review ) Select the entry 2. Pick up the handset or press J (for handsfree operation). The number is dialled out. OR 1. Press u ) Review ) Select the entry The screen shows Dial. 3. Press e again. The unit will dial the number immediately. Or Turn on the handsfree in On-hook mode, and dial the number after 3 seconds Edit a Phonebook Entry 1. Press u ) Review ) Select the entry 3. Edit will be displayed at the lowest line of the screen. Press e. 4. You will be prompted to edit the number. When done, press e to save it. 5. You will be prompted to edit the name. When done, press e to save it.

Press u ) Review ) Select the entry 3. Press! or " until Store to Direct appears at the lowest line of the display screen. Press e. 4. Press! or " to choose a Direct Memory number. Press e. 5. You will be prompted to edit the number. Edit it if you wish to, and press e to save it. 6. You will be prompted to edit the name. Edit it if you wish to, and press e to save it. The entry is stored in the Direct Memory you selected Delete a Phonebook Entry 1. Press u ) Review ) Select the entry 2. Press X. The display screen shows Delete?. 3. Press e to delete the entry or Y to cancel. Phonebook 5.2 Add a new Phonebook Entry 1. Press u ) New 2. You will be prompted to enter the phone number. When done, press e to save it. 3. You will be prompted to edit the name. When done, press e to save it. The entry is stored in the Phonebook. Tip New Phonebook entries can be added from Redial List. See Store a Redial entry to the Phonebook for details. 5.3 Delete all Phonebook Entries 1. Press u ) Delete All? The display screen shows Sure?. 3. Press e to delete all entries or Y to cancel. 15

18 Aton_C29_EN.book Page 16 Monday, June 22, :04 PM Direct Memory 6 Direct Memory Direct Memory stores number and name entries that can be quickly accessed and automatically dialled. The phone comes with 5 Direct Memory keys. Each key can store numbers with up to 24 digits and names with up to 20 characters. 6.1 Add a new Direct Memory entry If a Direct Memory key does not have any entry stored, a new entry can be added. There are 2 ways to add a new entry Manually add a Direct Memory 1. Press a Direct Memory key (that has no entry stored). The screen shows New?. 3. You will be prompted to enter the number. When done, press e to save it. 4. You will be prompted to enter the name. When done, press e to save it Add a Direct Memory from Phonebook This option lets you store a Phonebook entry into Direct Memory. See Store a Phonebook Entry to Direct Memory for details. 6.2 Dial a Direct Memory This option lets you call a number stored in Direct Memory with just one key press. 1. Press a Direct Memory key (that has an entry stored). The number will be dialled out. 16

The screen shows the Direct Memory number, phone number and name. 2. Press e. 3. You will be prompted to edit the number. When done, press e to save it. 4. You will be prompted to edit the name. When done, press e to save it. 6.4 Delete a Direct Memory 1. Press a Direct Memory key (that has an entry stored) for 3 seconds. The screen shows the Direct Memory number, phone number and name. 2. Press X. The screen shows Delete?. 3. Press e to delete the entry or Y to cancel. 7 Volume Settings Volume Settings This section tells you how to control the volume of the phone. 7.1 Volume control Handset volume This feature lets you adjust the volume you hear from the handset. 1. Lift up the handset and press p to reduce volume or o to increase volume Speakerphone volume This feature lets you adjust the volume you hear from the speakerphone. 1. When the speakerphone is in operation, press p to reduce volume or o to increase volume. 17

20 Aton_C29_EN.book Page 18 Monday, June 22, :04 PM Writing and editing text Ringer volume This feature lets you adjust the ringer volume when there is an incoming call. In idle mode or when the phone is ringing, press p to reduce volume or o to increase volume or to switch off. 7.2 Mute and Unmute the phone This feature lets you switch off the microphone so that the other party cannot hear you. 1. During a call, press.. Mute is activated. The appears on the top left corner of the screen. 2. To unmute a call, press. again. disappears. 8 Writing and editing text The following rules apply when writing text:! Press! or " to move the cursor to the right or left.! Press * to switch between upper case and lower case.! Press X to delete the letter/character to the left of the cursor. To manually switch to upper case or lower case, press *. 19

22 Aton_C29_EN.book Page 20 Monday, June 22, :04 PM Sending and Receiving SMS 9 Sending and Receiving SMS This section tells you how to use the Short Message System (SMS) features of the phone. The SMS service allows the transmission or reception of text messages to other devices. One message can have up to 160 characters. SMS service can only be used, if the device supports the display of the subscriber number (CLIP). Note Your network operator must support the SMS function. Important In order to receive a SMS, it is necessary that you have already sent at least one SMS. The sending number and receiving number for SMS centre are already preinstalled for Swisscom. Tip If the phone is connected to a PBX do not forget to enter the access code (e.g. 0) before the sending number of the SMS centre. See 9.5 SMS Settings for details on how to set the sending number and receiving number for the SMS centre. 9.1 Write an SMS (and send/ store it) 1. Press I ) Writing SMS 2. You will be prompted to write a message. When done, press e. Note The counter on the screen displays the number of characters entered. If the maximum length of 160 characters is reached, you cannot enter any more characters. Press * to switch between upper case and lower case. Press X to delete the character to the left of the cursor. 20

23 Aton_C29_EN.book Page 21 Monday, June 22, :04 PM 3. Enter a phone number to send the SMS to. When done, press e. OR Press u or v and use! and " to choose an entry, and then press e. 4. Press e to send the SMS now, or use! and " to select Store to save the SMS to Draft. (see 9.4 Draft ) Note If you are interrupted by a call while writing an SMS, the text is automatically saved in the Draft message list. If your SMS is not sent successfully, it will be saved in the Outbox, indicated with a letter F on the bottom right of the screen. 9.2 Inbox The Inbox stores all the SMS that you have received. Depending on the length of each SMS, it can store up to 25 messages. If the memory is full, the screen shows an error message. You have to delete some messages before you can store new ones. (See Delete Inbox SMS ) 1. Press I ) Inbox 2. Press! or " to scroll through the list. Sending and Receiving SMS Tip In the bottom right corner, there will be a letter A or N displayed. A means that the SMS has been read. N means that the SMS is unread. Note If the sender s number is longer than 15 digits, only the last 15 digits are displayed. If the last 6 digits of the sender s number match a number in the Direct Key Memory or Phonebook, the name is displayed Read Inbox SMS 1. Press I ) Inbox ) Select the entry 3. Read appears at the lowest line of the display screen. Press e. The SMS text is displayed. 4. If the SMS is longer than one page, press! or " to scroll between pages. 5. Press Y to exit. 21

Press! or " until Delete appears at the lowest line of the display creen. Press e. The SMS is deleted. The next SMS will be displayed (if any). Tip To set it so that Inbox SMS are automatically deleted after reading, see SMS Storing Call Inbox SMS This option lets you call the number that sent the SMS to you. 1. Press I ) Inbox ) Select the entry 3. Press! or " until CALL appears at the lowest line of the display screen. Press e. OR Press J (for handsfree operation). The number is dialled out Reply Inbox SMS This option lets you reply to an Inbox SMS. 1. Press I ) Inbox ) Select the entry 3. Press! or " until Reply appears at the lowest line of the display screen. Press e. This will bring you to 9.1 Write an SMS (and send/ store it), except that your message will be sent to the number of the SMS sender by default Use Inbox SMS This option lets you edit a message from the Inbox and then send it. 1. Press I ) Inbox ) Select the entry 3. Press! or " until Use appears at the lowest line of the display screen. Press e. This will bring you to 9.1 Write an SMS (and send/ store it), with the SMS text automatically displayed on the screen. You may edit the text and then send/ store it. 22

Press I ) Inbox ) Select the entry 3. Press! or " until Forwarding appears at the lowest line of the display screen. Press e. 4. Enter a phone number to send the SMS to. When done, press e. The SMS is sent. Tip You cannot edit the SMS text or choose to store the SMS with this option Delete all Inbox SMS This option deletes all SMS in Inbox. 1. Press I ) Inbox ) Select the entry 3. Press! or " until Delete all SMS appears at the lowest line of the display screen. Press e. All Inbox SMS are deleted. The Outbox stores all the SMS that you have sent. Depending on the length of each SMS, it can store up to 25 messages. If the memory is full, the screen shows an error message. You have to delete some messages before you can store new ones. (See Delete Outbox SMS ) 1. Press I ) Outbox 2. Press! or " to scroll through the list Read Outbox SMS 1. Press I ) Outbox ) Select the entry 3. Read appear at the lowest line of the display screen. This will bring you to 9.1 Write an SMS (and send/ store it), except that it will be sent to the number of the SMS recipient by default Use Outbox SMS This option lets you edit a message from the Outbox and then send it. 1. Press I ) Outbox ) Select the entry 3. Press! or "until Use appears at the lowest line of the display screen. Press e. This will bring you to 9.1 Write an SMS (and send/ store it) with the SMS text automatically displayed on the screen. You may edit the text and then send/ store it.

The SMS is sent. Tip You cannot edit the SMS text or choose to store the SMS with this option Delete all Outbox SMS This option deletes all SMS in Outbox. 1. Press I ) Outbox ) Select the entry 3. Press! or " until Delete All appears at the lowest line of the display screen. Press e. All Outbox SMS are deleted. Draft stores all the SMS that you have written and chosen to store instead of send. With COMBOX basic, you can always be reached on the telephone. The invisible answering machine answers any call that you can t take personally and registers the caller s messages digitally. You don t need an additional device and you don t pay a subscription fee. You can operate your COMBOX basic worldwide from any fixed-line or mobile phone, listen to messages and answer calls by simply pressing a key. Message Waiting Indicator (MWI) COMBOX basic can signal new messages on your telephone. If you don t have a Swisscom COMBOX basic yet, you can order it for free. To register your COMBOX basic dial toll free number from your own telephone and select COMBOX basic. MWI is ON, when a new voice message has been received in your COMBOX basic. MWI is OFF, when all new voice messages have been retrieved.

Check that the Ring Volume is not set to Off and make sure that is not displayed on the screen (see Ringer volume ) The other party cannot hear me! Have you pressed the Mute key? Press the key again and make sure that is not displayed on the screen (see 7.2 Mute and Unmute the phone ) The Caller s number is not displayed! The network does not support CID, CID is unavailable or unknown. I cannot receive new SMS! SMS memory is full: Delete old SMS to receive new ones.
