3 Inmarsat today The company Established in 1979 as an inter-governmental organisation (IGO) Privatised in April 1999 Majority share holding taken by Apax and Permira December 2003 Services cover the maritime, aeronautical and land mobile markets Owns, Controls and Manages a network of 9 geostationary satellites, serving user terminals The track record 25 years of successful service Trusted with Maritime and Aeronautical distress and safety services through compliance with IMO and ICAO requirements overseen by IMSO (International Mobile Satellite Organisation) The technology I4 launch 2005 onwards - the worlds three most powerful commercial satellites

22 Avionics for SwiftBroadband The I4 satellites and the BGAN Network will operate at L-Band (1.5/1.6GHz) Existing Inmarsat Aeronautical Antennas (High, Intermediate and Low Gain Antennas) will work with the I4 satellites and BGAN Use existing Aero HPAs (High Power Amplifier) where possible Newer smaller lighter equipment in development ARINC 781 (Typical weight/power of a SwiftBroadband twochannel installation, with antenna: 110lbs/200watts) Simultaneous SwiftBroadband, Swift64 and Aero H/H+ Classic transmissions will operate through a single Inmarsat Aero-H antenna

28 Eurocontrol NexSat Steering Group action Inmarsat beginning a deeper involvement with Eurocontrol NexSat group a Call-for-tender was issued to assess Aero- BGAN/SwiftBroadband to support Eurocontrol NexSat requirements Study objectives: This study aims at helping the aviation community to assess how Aero- BGAN could improve its communication infrastructure in fulfilling the aviation requirements, what would be the resulting concept of operation in different world regions, what are the expected associated cost, and how major institutional and business issues would be solved. QinetiQ formed a consortium; SITA, EADS-Astrium, Inmarsat and Thales Avionics UK Proposal delivered in July. Contract awarded this month. 30 European Commission A Proposal Submitted in March 2004 for an EC 6th Framework Integrated Project to Investigate, Prototype and Demonstrate Advanced Satellite Technologies for Navigation and Communications for Civil Aircraft. Project ANASTASIA Core team: Thales-Avionics, Airbus, Dassault-Aviation, DLR. (Inmarsat support WP4: Communications) Status consortia down-selected to one. Entered contract negotiation phase. 4 year project. Expected to start in Jan work will concentrate on the design and implementation of a prototype, affordable aeronautical satcom system that will meet the evolving European ATM requirements.
