Requirements of 4G-based mobile broadband on future transport networks ECOC, Geneva, Matthias Fricke, Andrea Heckwolf, Reinald Ries, Dr. Felix Wissel, Dr. Stefan Wevering, Nokia Siemens Networks 1
Agenda Motivation From LTE to LTE Advanced -- The Long Term Evolution of mobile broadband Important building blocks of LTE Advanced The evolution of mobile networks Optimizing transport networks for 4G mobile networks Typical roundtrip times for different access technologies The impact of LTE The impact of LTE Advanced Conclusion 2
Gigabit society needs transport solution for dramatically growing mobile data traffic Traffic growth up to 6000% is expected by 2013 Existing mobile communications infrastructure falls short in terms of Higher bandwidth Better quality Anytime Anywhere Lower prices 4G/LTE is considered the optimal solution
First LTE deployment in Germany: Kyritz, Brandenburg, 30/08/10 Re-using the digital dividend frequencies to fill the white spots LTE Plug & Play : Site in Kyritz taken into use by plugging in 'magenta' transport cable to NSN Flexi LTE René Obermann, CEO Deutsche Telekom "With the LTE-Rollout it will be easier for us to overcome the 'white spots' in Germany, where no fast Internet access is possible" Tina Fischer, State Secretary and representative of Brandenburg Green Light for 4G ; Kyritz, Brandenburg "Internet is the lifeline for the modern society". "Companies that look for a place to start their businesses, no longer ask for access to street infrastructure, but first ask 'Do you have broadband-access here?'". 3G coverage 4G coverage
Deutsche Telekom launches first LTE network in major city 100 LTE Base Stations connected in Cologne, 01/06/11 Deutsche Telekom has launched the first LTE high-speed network (Long Term Evolution) in a major German city. After Cologne, more than 100 other cities in the entire federal territory will be provided with next generation mobile communications. Further expansion will occur in the weeks ahead. Benefits at a glance for Cologne residents Speed record: mobile surfing with up to 100 Mbit/s Utilization of 1.8 Ghz technology for surfing at the fiber optic level 100 LTE base stations serve the entire city center region. About 150 km² covered.

Optimizing transport networks for 4G The impact of LTE Advanced Simultaneous data transmission from different enbs to user equipment for CoMP JP/JT CoMP implementation may require direct X2 connectivity between enb sites due to stringent latency requirements. enb enb Mobile Backhaul Network X2-u/c Backbone Network S1-u/c MME SAE-GW 11
Optimizing transport networks for 4G Outlook: Separation of RF and Baseband Modules 3G Site Feederless 4G Site Feederless RF Module System Module RF Module X2 Centralized location public Matthias Fricke / Requirements of 4G-based mobile broadband on future transport networks
Conclusions LTE and LTE Advanced are exciting technologies for the future of communication. Both for mobility applications and for special applications, such as fixed access substitution in white spot areas. Optimizing the transport network architectures to best support 4G mobile services is necessary to ensure end users quality of experience. We expect that 3GPP standardization will reach its conclusion next year. Then the details of LTE Advanced will be specified with respect to CoMP and its requirements for the X2 interface. First analysis shows that even stringent latency and bandwidth requirements of LTE Advanced could be met by fiber-based backhauling to the reduced number of central offices in our German network. 13
