5 The importance of Interoperability The ability of systems and products to interwork is fundamental Interoperability is the ultimate aim of our standardisation work the red thread running through the entire standards development process interoperability is not an isolated issue it is not something to be somehow fixed at the end The best approach base standards should be designed with interoperability in mind from the outset testing (and formal test descriptions) provides vital feedback the standardization work into Jørgen Friis, Deputy Director General, ETSI 5

6 What happens if we get it wrong? In the past, interoperability failures meant: Bad publicity in trade magazines Embarrassment for the manufacturer Annoyance of the end customer Today, interoperability failures in the field means: Front page headlines in the Financial Times Fall in manufacturers stock price Loss of investor confidence Unrecoverable damage to brand name Irretrievable loss of customers We can no longer afford to get it wrong!! 8 Conclusions on Convergence World Class Standards Further Telecoms network convergence is inevitable and IMS will be that point of convergence A single IMS specification is essential to ensure economic success Performance expectations demand further R&D investment Interoperability testing is essential Jørgen Friis, Deputy Director General, ETSI 8

9 Cooperation is the way forward Whatever decisions are taken, robust standards are essential for stimulating a multi-vendor, mass market and for future-proofing of investments Interoperability is key Standardization requires investment too!
