Cisco Unified IP Phone 7942/7945/7962/7965/7975 Firmware Upgrade from pre 8.3(3) to 9.3(1) Document ID: Contents Introduction Prerequisites Requirements Components Used Conventions Overview Conditions Preparation Solution Summary and Key Points Related Information Introduction This document provides guidelines and best practices to upgrade Cisco Unified IP Phone 7900 series from pre 8.3(3) firmware version to 9.3(1). Phones that have pre 8.3(3) firmware installed must be upgraded to 8.5(2) firmware version as an interim step before they are successfully upgraded to a 9.3(1) firmware version. The sections that follow provide instructions to upgrade Cisco Unified IP Phone 7900 series from pre 8.3(3) firmware version to 9.3(1) firmware version. Prerequisites Requirements There are no specific requirements for this document. Components Used This document is limited to Cisco Unified IP Phone 7942/7945/7962/7965/7975 series firmware upgrade from pre 8.3(3) firmware version to 9.3(1) firmware version on a Cisco Unified Communications Manager Business Edition 3000 server. The information in this document was created from the devices in a specific lab environment. All of the devices used in this document started with a cleared (default) configuration. If your network is live, make sure that you understand the potential impact of any command. Conventions Refer to Cisco Technical Tips Conventions for more information on document conventions. Overview
For all SIP firmware upgrades from pre 8.3(3) firmware release versions to 9.3(1) version or later, you must first upgrade your firmware to an intermediate version (8.3(3) to 8.5(2)) and then upgrade to 9.3(1). To upgrade the Cisco Unified IP Phone 7900 series from pre 8.3(3) firmware version to 9.3(1) or later version, follow the steps provided to register these phones on the Cisco Unified Communications Manager Business Edition 3000 server. Note: You can directly upgrade the Cisco Unified IP Phone 7900 series 8.3(3) or later firmware version to 9.3(1) and register with Cisco Unified Communications Manager Business Edition Press Setting > Model Information > Load File in order to check the phone firmware version. After Cisco Unified IP Phone 7900 series on pre 8.3(3) firmware version is powered on and connected to the network, the phone device information needs to be entered in the Cisco Unified Communications Manager Business Edition 3000 phone configuration page. Conditions When the Cisco Unified IP Phone 7900 series with pre 8.3(3) phone firmware tries to register to the Cisco Unified Communications Manager Business Edition 3000 server, the phone reboots, attempts to upgrade, and shows "Auth Fail", "Load Authentication Failed", "Registration Rejected : Error DBCo..." messages. It continues to cycle through this process.

Note: If the active phone load is pre 8.3(3) and the phone is exhibiting these symptoms, the procedure describe in this document needs to be followed to upgrade the firmware.
Preparation The upgrade process involves a reboot of the Cisco Unified Communications Manager Business Edition 3000 server. Therefore, it is recommended to execute the upgrade during a maintenance window to limit impact to users. The following phone firmware COP files are required to upgrade pre 8.3(3) firmware versions: cmterm 7942_7962 sip cop.sgn cmterm 7945_7965 sip cop.sgn cmterm 7975 sip cop.sgn Note: You can download the COP files from Navigate to Products > Voice and Unified Communications > IP Telephony > Unified Communications Endpoints > Cisco Unified IP Phone 7900 Series. Solution Tip: Check the firmware version installed on the Cisco Unified IP Phone 7900 series. Perform these steps in order to upgrade the pre 8.3(3) firmware version: 1. Log in to the Cisco Unified Communications Manager Business Edition 3000 server administration UI page. 2. Click the Maintenance tab in the left panel. 3. Click Upgrade under the Maintenance tab.
4. Place the COP file in any of the folders of the SFTP server. Note: You can install the cmterm 79xx sip cop.sgn file using a DVD or storage device or through SFTP server. For a workaround in this document, the COP files are downloaded from the SFTP server. 5. Enter the IP Address, User Name, and Password of the SFTP server. 6. Click Browse and select 8.5(2) cop file: cmterm 79xx sip cop.sgn. Note: Due to Cisco bug ID CSCth87104 (registered customers only), the MD5 checksum for COP files might not work. Leave the MD5 Checksum field empty (see the screenshot in Step 7).
7. Click Start Upgrade. 8. The upgrade progress validates the COP file and continues to install. 9. The installation process is completed and the 8.5(2) COP file is installed on the Cisco Unified Communications Manager Business Edition 3000 server. Note: Reboot the Cisco Unified Communications Manager Business Edition 3000 server after the phone load COP installation.
10. After the reboot, an upgrade screen appears on the Cisco Unified IP Phone 7900 and displays the status as the phone processes each piece of the firmware upgrade. Note: Press the Settings button on the phone and navigate to Model Information > Load File to verify the phone firmware version. 11. At this point in the process, the phones should register. To complete this procedure, you must now upgrade from 8.5(2) to 9.3(1) to ensure the phone supports all the features of the Cisco Unified Communications Manager Business Edition 3000 server. To upgrade from 8.5(2) to 9.3(1) firmware version, follow Step 1 through Step 5 again. In place of Step 6, choose the 9.3(1) firmware version files listed below, then continue with Step 7 through Step 10. Click Browse and select 9.3(1) cop file: cmterm 7942_7962 sip cop.sgn cmterm 7945_7965 sip cop.sgn cmterm 7975 sip cop.sgn Summary and Key Points The Cisco Unified IP Phone 7900 series firmware must be upgraded to version 9.3(1) or later to work properly with Cisco Unified Communications Manager Business Edition This document provides the steps to upgrade Cisco Unified IP Phone 7900 series on pre 8.3(3) firmware versions through a required intermediate version 8.5(2) firmware version to the final 9.3(1) or later firmware version.
