2 Programme Specification BA (Hons) International Management This programme specification (PS) is designed for prospective students, enrolled students, academic staff and potential employers. It provides a concise summary of the main features of the programme and the intended learning outcomes that a typical student might reasonably be expected to achieve and demonstrate if he/she takes full advantage of the learning opportunities that are provided. More detailed information on the teaching, learning and assessment methods, learning outcomes and content for each module can be found in Definitive Module Documents (DMDs) and Module Guides. Programme Rationale The programme caters for students who wish to enter a career in international management and who desire to obtain two degree awards to reflect this choice. It will be equally attractive to students from the UK and other partner countries, and will afford the opportunity to study and work in a country other than their own. It is designed to provide the managers of tomorrow with the business and management skills and cultural awareness required for success in an international management career. It will equip the student with the knowledge and skills required for managerial posts in the UK as well as mainland Europe or other Englishspeaking countries. The international experience will be an important and positive factor in the personal development of students, and a foreign language competence will give them a competitive edge in the job market. The managers of tomorrow require a broad range of skills and capabilities, and need to operate effectively in a rapidly changing and increasingly global business environment. The programme offers a foundation in the disciplines that underpin and contextualise business, as well as exploring the functional areas of finance, human resource management and marketing. It further focuses on leadership and management practice, whilst developing intercultural awareness and sensitivity. It includes a mandatory work placement, which provides valuable work experience that heightens business awareness and employability. The programme, which is taught in conjunction with partners in the Trans-Atlantic Business School Alliance (TABSA), offers two degree awards on completion of the programme. It requires students electing to study and work in France, Germany or Spain to follow the host country language. 2

Programme Structures, Features, Levels, Modules, and Credits The programme is offered as a 4-year degree leading to the award of BA Degree with Honours in International Management. Where a partner student has completed two placements of a minimum of 18 weeks each, at their home/a partner university and at UH, and passed any required assessments, a sandwich degree will be awarded (BA Honours in International Management (Sandwich)). For outgoing students, entry is normally at level 4 at UH with suitable A-level or equivalent qualifications. For incoming students, entry is at Level 4 at the partner university, subject to the partner s entry requirements. For outgoing students, the programme is located at University of Hertfordshire in the first year, then at one of the partner institutions for the following two years, followed by a final year at University of Hertfordshire. For incoming students, the programme is located at one of the partner universities in the first two years, and then at University of Hertfordshire for the following two years. Students will obtain, on completion of the programme, a BA International Management award from University of Hertfordshire, and a Bachelors award from the partner university attended. In the first year at the partner university, students will follow equivalent modules at the partner institution to the core modules at University of Hertfordshire, as shown in this Programme Specification. The other subjects at the partners will in part reflect the requirements to obtain the partner s degree award and the optional subjects available. The partners for entry in September 2017 will be: - Kedge Business School, Marseille, France - Hochschule Bremen, Germany - Universitat de Valencia, Spain - University of North Carolina Wilmington Cameron School of Business, USA The programme offers three languages: French, German and Spanish at beginners, intermediate and advanced levels. Students electing to study in France, Germany or Spain will be required to take the host country language. Work-Based Learning, including Sandwich Programmes All partner institutions require students to undertake an 18-week placement as a minimum, and this is built into the programme of study. The placement period is an important element of the programme as it gives students a practical perspective to their academic study, enables them to increase their foreign language proficiency (in some cases), and to develop cultural awareness and an understanding of foreign business practices. A pass grade for the placement is essential for the completion of the Dual Award at the partner universities. An award in the Sandwich mode is made if at least 36 weeks of approved, supervised work experience is undertaken, and the HBS Placement Module successfully completed. Because of the duration of study necessitated by this format of programme, sandwich degrees will normally only be available to those students who are able to undertake two placements as part of their programme so that they accumulate the necessary 36 weeks placement time required in total. This therefore is available to incoming students from Kedge and Bremen. 5

6 Programme Structure The programme structure and progression information below (Table 1a and 1b) is provided for the Honours award. Any interim awards are identified in Table 1b. The Programme Learning Outcomes detailed above are developed and assessed through the constituent modules. Table 2 (in section 2) identifies where each learning outcome is assessed. 35 Programme-specific assessment regulations The programme is compliant with the University's academic regulations (UPR AS11, UPR AS12 or UPR AS13, UPR AS14) with the exception of those listed below, which have been specifically approved by the University: Students Honours classification will be determined from the average numeric grade of their best 90 credits at Level 6 (Year 4) at the University of Hertfordshire, as in line with the University Regulations (UPRs AS14 D.6.1.6). Final compensation will not be applied to the Level 6 Applied Project module. This applies to both outgoing and incoming students. Incoming Bremen students are required to complete an additional language module for their home institution. This continues the additional language that they studied at Bremen. This module grade and credit cannot contribute to their UH degree award. A sandwich degree is available only to incoming students from Kedge and Bremen. Further points of clarification and interpretation relevant to this specific programme are given below: All partners require students to pass their placement portfolio and the Applied Project in order to receive their award At partner universities, the partner regulations apply, both for the management of taught study, and placements. Students are responsible for ensuring that they adhere to partner regulations and that they fulfil all partner requirements for the award of partner degrees. The award of a partner degree is not dependent on the award of a University of Hertfordshire degree and vice versa. Degrees awarded by partners are awarded in line with their own regulations, and might not include a specific classification beyond pass/fail.
