KCTCS General Education Competencies Students should prepare for twenty-first century challenges by gaining: A. Knowledge of human cultures and the physical and natural worlds through study in the sciences and mathematics, social sciences, humanities, histories, languages, and the arts. B. Intellectual and practical skills, including inquiry and analysis critical and creative thinking written and oral communication quantitative literacy information literacy teamwork and problem solving C. Personal and social responsibility, including civic knowledge and engagement (local and global) intercultural knowledge and competence ethical reasoning and action foundations and skills for lifelong learning D. Integrative and applied learning, including synthesis and advanced accomplishment across general and specialized skills. Course Specific Competencies (Student Outcomes): Upon completion of this course, the student can: 1. Identify and explain motherboard components. 2. Identify, install, configure, and upgrade personal computer components. 3. Perform device driver installation, scheduled maintenance, and memory and firmware updates.
3 4. Identify common tools, basic diagnostic procedures, troubleshooting techniques, and preventive maintenance methods. 5. Explain and apply the troubleshooting process to diagnose and repair common hardware and software problems. 6. Demonstrate an understanding of conversion between binary, decimal, hexadecimal number systems. 7. Compare and contrast client operating systems and their features. 8. Use multiple user interfaces, including command-line, to perform operating system management tasks; to configure, optimize, and upgrade the current client operating systems; and to diagnose network connection issues. 9. Use and manage file systems, operating system utilities, backup programs, and optimization tools. 10. Describe the process to install, configure, secure, and troubleshoot a basic small or home office network. 11. Identify the fundamental principles of networking and security. 12. Describe and apply appropriate operational procedures including safety, environmental procedures, good communication skills, and professional behavior. Professionalism in the workplace Course Structure: This course is being taught through a 16 week, in person format. There will be one section due every week. You will be expected to access the course site through Blackboard and TestOut to view course materials and submit assignments. Excessive absences or lack of participation will result in the instructor asking you to drop the course. Starfish is a software program that allows college faculty and advisors to maintain contact with students concerning their academic progress during the semester. If academic progress is not satisfactory, flags can be issued with suggested improvements. Referrals to academic support services can be made and positive comments, called kudos, may also be issued. These Starfish notices will be sent to students college addresses only. Students will also have the opportunity to schedule appointments with their academic advisors through the Starfish calendar feature. Students may access Starfish through a link in Blackboard. Students may also be able to sign up for conferencing appointments with their instructors in order to discuss course progress using the Starfish calendar feature. Students should contact their instructor, their advisor, or an advisor in the Advising Center if they have questions about the program. Technology/Media Component: The TestOut Labsim website is the software package of choice that will be used throughout the semester. You must have access to Windows 10. If you do not have Microsoft Office on your home computer, you have 5 licenses available for download through your Webmail account. Ask your instructor for specific instructions to download.
5 Service-Learning: Course Requirements and Evaluation: Assignments will be done weekly through this course. You will be expected to do course work and submit all assignments on time. Grading Policy: Grading Scale % -A 80-89% -B 70-79% -C 60-69% -D Below E Attendance Policy: Attendance in this course is mandatory. If you miss more than 20% of the scheduled classes you will be asked to drop the class. Missed Exam Policy: If you miss an exam you must contact your instructor by the next week to arrange a makeup exam. If you do not follow this policy you will not be able to make up the exam. Late Assignment Policy: Late assignments will not be taken. Withdrawal Policy: The student can withdraw up to midterm without the consent of the instructor.
