2 Your Introduction to Certification & Testing This presentation will cover the very basic information related to requirements and procedures surrounding certification, testing, and the test approval process/procedures.

3 Purpose Statement The purpose of the presentation is to introduce Professional and Student Services Class certificate candidates to what will be expected in terms of certification, testing, the test approval process, and to be given the opportunity to begin planning ways to cover the cost of examinations.

4 Spr 17 Graduate Student Admits (Professional/Student Services Certification) All Graduate students admitted Spr 17 to a graduate professional program pursuing initial educator certification with a Master s degree or a professional educator certification must: 1. Must be accepted into a College of Education graduate degree program. 2. Must complete a short certification in order to apply for a certification plan. PB students must have a Bachelor s degree and at least a GPA of 2.5 in the last 60 hours of complete coursework to apply. 3. After submission of the certification plan application you will receive a copy of your plan in approximately two weeks outlining all required coursework. 4. See a program advisor. 5. After receiving your plan you may petition course substitutions by submitting a Certification Plan Petition, if necessary. 6. Complete all coursework. 7. Complete state exams. Prior approval by the certification officer is required. 8. Apply for certification.

6 Professional/Student Services Recommendation Process Must have a certification plan on file Completion of all certification plan coursework Master s degree officially conferred(doctorate degree for Superintendents) A Texas teaching certificate Have two years approved full-time teacher experience in an approved accredited school documented through an official teacher service record Superintendent certification requires a valid Principal certificate Successful completion of TExES exam required for chosen certification area (minimum score 240) Practicum course completed with160 hours documented via log (ELCS 6393/7392, ELCS 7394, & PHLS 7393), and signed by mentor and university supervisor Applying for Texas Educator Certificate If you have not already initiated your TEAL account for testing you will need to do so. Please see the Educator Certification Online System instructions. Obtaining a Copy of Your Certificate Virtual Certificate- Official Certificate Record: The virtual certificate found online is the official certificate record. Effective April 1, 2009, hard copies of the certificate will no longer be automatically printed and mailed to the certificate holder after submitting a certificate application. The certificate application will have a field where the individual may request a hard copy. To print the virtual certificate, the individual can login to his/her TEA account at

8 Who must take the TExES Examinations? All candidates seeking professional and student services certification are required by state law to take and pass TExES (Texas Examination of Educator Standards) examinations prior to being recommended for certification. TAC 230

9 September 1 st, 2015 As of 9/1/15,state law now limits the total number of test attempts to five for any one given certification exam. Keep in my that the vast majority of our candidates are able to pass all exams easily within the allotted attempts allowed.

10 How are exams administered? All exams are administered by computer at various independently run testing facilities. Candidates with a documented disability or health-related need must make arrangements with ETS (testing company) BEFORE registering for any exam. It is not too early to get the paperwork in place Once approved, accommodations are good for a two year period.

11 What is the cost of each exam? The registration fee for each exam is $ plus a Texas use fee of $3.20, and payment must be made by either credit or debit card at time of registration. This makes the total cost of each exam $134.20, and the same fees also apply to any necessary exam retakes.

12 When will I be eligible to test? Professional and Student Service Certificate Candidates must get approval to test after practicum coursework has been completed and needs Program Director Approval (ELCS 6393/7392, ELCS 7394, & PHLS 7393)

13 Where do I take the exams? There are many test sites across the state (there is one located on campus at the testing ) and candidates may choose to take exams at any location available for the exam date selected.

14 Are there materials to help me prepare for the exam? You can find additional materials at no cost on the ETS website - Test at a Glance and Preparation Manuals on that page contain a lot of very useful information.

15 Should I know anything else? You will need to ensure you have set up a TEAL (TEA Login) account with the Texas Education Agency (TEA). Applying for Texas Educator Certificate If you have not already initiated your TEAL account for testing you will need to do so. Please see the Educator Certification Online System instructions. You will be assigned a TEA ID# at that time. Record the number in a place you can easily access it, such as your cell phone.

18 A Final Note University of Houston prepares our professional candidates very well for exams, and currently holds an overall 95% pass rate for all certification areas offered. If you dedicate yourself to your classes and take learning seriously, you should have little trouble passing your exams. Certification Services wishes you the best as you test!
