1 Electrical and Computer Engineering Student Learning Outcome Assessment Report 1. Program mission The departmental educational mission was approved in Fall of 2007 and appears in the 2008 undergraduate catalog. The mission statement reads: The Electrical and Computer Engineering Department strives to contribute to the state, nation, and world through the education of outstanding professionals and leaders in engineering. Our educational focus is on a broad, rigorous education in all areas of electrical and computer engineering with significant hands-on experiences. The program will provide students with an understanding of engineering problem solving at all levels and an appreciation for engineering as a profession. 2. Student Learning Outcomes (SLO) a. Campus-Wide Student Learning Outcomes: Programs must demonstrate that their graduates have: I. an ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing. II. an ability to think critically and analyze effectively. III. an ability to apply disciplinary knowledge and skills in solving critical problems. IV. an ability to function in diverse learning and working environments. V. an understanding of professional and ethical responsibility. VI. an awareness of national and global contemporary issues. VII. a recognition of the need for, and an ability to engage in, life-long learning. b. Program Specific Student Learning Outcomes The learning outcomes of both BS Electrical Engineering and BS Computer Engineering programs are: a: an ability to apply knowledge of mathematics, science, and engineering b: an ability to design and conduct experiments, as well as to analyze and interpret data c: an ability to design a system, component, or process to meet desired needs d: an ability to function on multi-disciplinary teams e: an ability to identify, formulate, and solve engineering problems f: an understanding of professional and ethical responsibility g: an ability to communicate effectively 1

2 h: the broad education necessary to understand the impact of engineering solutions in a global and societal context i: a recognition of the need for, and an ability to engage in life-long learning j: a knowledge of contemporary issues k: an ability to use the techniques, skills, and modern engineering tools necessary for engineering practice. l: an awareness of engineering and professional issues related to complex projects. The ECE learning outcomes are mapped to the campus learning outcomes in the following table. ECE Outcomes a b c d e f g h i j k l Campus Outcomes I II III IV V VI VII 3.
