4 Introduction The competency-based (CB) Functional Safety Engineer Certification Program has been developed by Exemplar Global and the Korea Testing Laboratory (KTL) in liaison with industry representatives. This program provides international recognition for engineers who ensure that automotive-specific safety critical components are safety-compliant and meet ISO safety standards. This personnel certification program has been developed to meet the following key objectives: To achieve the requirements of the International Standard for personnel certification ISO/IEC 17024:2012; To ensure the requirements of functional safety (ISO 26262) To assist organizations to select appropriately qualified functional safety (ISO 26262) engineers; and To enhance the professional recognition of qualified functional safety (ISO 26262) engineers. Engineers who wish to become certified by Exemplar Global should review this document and the Personnel Certification Guide to better understand the certification requirements prior to applying for certification. 5 Grades of Certification There are two grades of Functional Safety Engineer certifications: Functional Safety Probationary Engineer Functional Safety Engineer The Functional Safety Probationary Engineer tests, evaluates, and implements controls and safety features in a vehicle to ensure they are optimized to keep the vehicle in a safe state. The Functional Safety Engineer will actively participate with the product development teams to ensure that relevant functional safety standards are achieved and maintained for its current and future products. This understanding of applied technologies includes, but is not limited to, development and operation of functional safety (ISO 26262) engineer systems. Applicants for grades must provide evidence with their application related to their combined indirect education, direct education, work experience, and audit experience specific to the scope they seek. GRADE TRAINING WORK EXPERIENCE EDUCATION Functional Safety Probationary Engineer KTL ISO Training (Exemplify) None Applicants must have completed an engineering degree of tertiary education or national equivalent. Examples include: university degree, college diploma, and advanced certificate. Functional Safety Engineer KTL ISO Training (Exemplify) Two years relevant work experience in product development, ideally in automotive safety-related products. Applicants must have completed an engineering degree of tertiary education or national equivalent. Examples include: university degree, college diploma, and advanced certificate. 5

6 Knowledge Requirements Applicants for Functional Safety Engineer certification must provide evidence of knowledge competency defined in the following units: Functional Safety Probationary Engineer: Understand safety lifecycle (management, development system/hardware/software level, production) for vehicle developments required in ISO 26262; Understand risk-based approach to determine the automotive safety integrity level; Understand the demonstration to achieve functional safety with proper technical methods and analysis through evidences; and Understand requirements of the relationship between customers and suppliers for functional safety. Functional Safety Engineer: Act as a functional safety engineer for safety products; Perform safety management activities for active safety according to relevant standards during all project phases (concept, product development, and production), including preliminary hazard analysis, qualitative, and quantitative safety analysis; Develop safety architectures and safety plans to ensure compliance with ISO 26262; Lead and coordinate the creation of functional safety documentation according to ISO 26262; Cascading safety requirements to the systems, subsystems, and component levels in the product portfolio; Specify detailed safety requirements, including diagnostic and software requirements; and Collaborate with functional safety manager, project managers, development team and customers regarding functional safety. EVIDENCE OF KNOWLEDGE-BASED COMPETENCY: A certificate/s of attainment from the KTL Functional Safety (ISO 26262) course from an Exemplar Global certified training provider issued within the three years prior to application is required. Applicants whose certificate is older than three years may be eligible to complete the KTL knowledge examination to demonstrate current knowledge. 6

7 Qualification Requirements Applicants for Functional Safety Engineer (except Functional Safety Probationary Engineer) certification must provide evidence of qualifications defined by Exemplar Global in the following categories: EVIDENCE OF EDUCATION: Applicants must have completed an engineering degree of tertiary education or national equivalent. Examples include a university degree or college diploma. EVIDENCE OF WORK EXPERIENCE: The functional safety engineer must provide evidence of at least two years work experience in product development, ideally in automotive safety-related products responsibilities. Evidence of work experience must be verifiable and include: Employer (including contact details); Dates of employment; and Roles, responsibilities (job description), and achievements. ACCEPTABLE FORMS OF EVIDENCE: Acceptable evidence of education and work experience will be in the form of a copy of the applicant s educational certificate and/or degree and a work resume or curriculum vitae. This documentation is submitted with the application. 7

8 Examination of Skill Applicants for Functional Safety Engineers (except Functional Safety Probationary Engineers) must provide evidence of the skill competency defined by Exemplar Global. THE FOLLOWING COMPETENCIES ARE REQUIRED TO BE DEMONSTRATED: Functional Safety Engineer Grade: Written skill test exams by certified test center. 8

9 Recertification To maintain certification all certified Functional Safety Engineers are required to demonstrate continuing conformity with the current certification requirements for the grade of certification awarded. Exemplar Global will provide reminders with an invoice for the recertification fee. Every two years from the date of initial certification and each subsequent recertification, Functional Safety Engineers must provide: Confirmation that the Code of Conduct has been adhered to and any complaints against performance have been resolved; Examination of skill for Functional Safety Engineer (except Functional Safety Probationary Engineer); or KTL 1 day maintenance course. 9

10 Expansion Certified Functional Safety Engineers can apply to expand their grade of certification at any time. To apply for an expansion of certification auditors are required to: Complete the online expansion application available through your self service portal, accessible through the Exemplar Global website at Submit the expansion fee as part of the online application process; and Provide evidence of the requirements for the grade sought, as defined in the certification requirements.
