1 Reseller Update Update no: 254 Date: 12th April 00 Introduction of the IP Networking Cassette Introduction This reseller update introduces the IP Networking Cassette (IPNC) the latest addition to the INDeX s data offering. The IPNC is an Integral router designed specifically to address the Remote Access and Internet Access markets, whilst the Data Router Cassette remains the solution of choice for LAN-LAN connectivity. The IP Networking Cassette also provides the foundation for delivering Voice over IP solutions. The IPNC is supported by INDeX level 9 software on both the CPU-V and CPU-X The following sections describe the IPNC functionality and positioning in greater detail. IPNC Features and Benefits Remote LAN access Allowing remote access to the company network is becoming increasingly important. Security is a major consideration. The IP Networking Cassette supports a variety of security features applicable to remote access. Password Authentication Protocol (PAP) is an international standard whereby the calling party sends a simple unencrypted password to the IP Networking cassette that checks it against its database. Challenge Handshake Authentication Protocol (CHAP), also an international standard, is an alternative to PAP offering greater security in that the password is not sent over the unprotected link where eves droppers may intercept it. Calling Line Identity checking is where the IPNC checks the CLI of the caller to assess if they are calling from a trusted telephone number before allowing access to the network. Time Profiles allow the IPNC to govern at what times a remote worker can access the network i.e. 9 to 5 Mondays to Fridays Integral Firewall control what type of protocols can be used and which machines can be accessed on a user by user basis. The IPNC allows all of the above features to be applied to each specific user. A particularly powerful combination is CLI, Time Profiles and the Firewall. For example a home worker accessing the network can be configured so that they will only be allowed on to the network if they dial in from their home telephone number during normal working hours. Once on the network the firewall can restrict them to only accessing the file server and only allow the use of file transfer protocols. Conversely, a member of the IT department could be allowed access to the network without restriction 365 days of the year providing they are calling from a trusted telephone number.
2 Modem Support IPNC can be provided with four, optional, V.90 modems. These can operate at speeds of upto 56Kbps depending on the callers modem and line conditions. The modems are a central resource allocated on a per call basis and released to the pool at the end of the call. Modems are most likely to be required when providing access to staff who are either mobile, calling from hotel rooms, or those who only occasionally work from home and do not wish to go to the expense of an ISDN line. Terminal Adapters (TA) upto 32 simultaneous calls from terminal adapters can be handled by the IPNC allowing for speeds of 64 to 115Kbps (two ISDN calls are required for 115kbps operation reducing the total number of simultaneous calls supported). There are wide ranges of TAs available in the market, an obvious recommendation would be the CyberGear TA with its added benefits of providing telephony and CTI to the remote worker. Personal Routers As with the TA upto 32 x 64K simultaneous calls can be handled by the IPNC. Multiple 64K ISDN channels can be combined for even greater throughput (two ISDN calls are required for 1128kbps operation reducing the total number of simultaneous calls supported). Using a CyberGear Gold has the added benefit of providing Telephony, CTI and voic to the remote worker. Routers should always be considered in preference to TAs and modems in environments where the remote worker is connected to the office network for substantial periods of time. A router will drop the telephone line when idle and reconnect when required without the users intervention. This will help minimise telephone costs. Internet Access Every business today can benefit from the wealth of information available on the Internet be it market research, competitor analysis or looking for a supplier. Similarly, by hosting a web site, opportunities arise to sell and market products, e-commerce. The IPNC is the ideal way to enable a customer access to the Internet. With a competitive Recommended Selling Price the cost barrier is breached. However, customers new to this technology may still have some concerns. I don t want my staff wasting all day playing with the Internet and running up a big telephone bill. With the IPNC Service Quotas can be set to limit the total time that a service, such as Internet Access, is available to a company. Once a quota period has been used up that service will no longer be available. The quota can be refreshed on a daily, Weekly or monthly basis allowing tight control over telephone expenses and staff misuse. Is this going to leave my network vulnerable to hackers? The IPNC has a number of security and privacy features to help in protecting a customers network. Network Address Translation allows the numbering scheme of a network to be hidden from the outside world, representing the whole network as a single IP number. In addition to this an integral Firewall allows tight control of the type, source and destination of traffic that traverses the IPNC. Most Internet Service Providers will provide as part of their offering some space for a customers web site. However, in some cases, where they wish to be in control of performance and maintenance, it may make sense for the customer to host their own Web site on their own network. When hosting a web site a leased line connection is essential. This will ensure 100% availability and maximum performance and capacity. The IPNC supports an X.21 or V.35 leased line as standard for this purpose. Being externally clocked the IPNC will operate at the Kilostream speed subscribed to, this could be up to a full 2M bit/s per Second. Voice over IP Many data networks have capacity that could be shared with voice traffic. The combination of Voice over IP and Quality of Service (QOS) standards now makes this a realistic prospect. INDeX combines both traditional telecommunications and these new technologies in a single platform allowing a low risk transition from traditional telecommunications to IP based telephony. INDeX delivers Voice over IP in two-application areas, Desk to Desk telephony across an IP wide area network and the support of IP extensions on the LAN. The INDeX solution uses the industry standard Difserv to prioritise voice traffic over data, allowing VoIP technology to deliver real business solutions today. Through VoIP the opportunity to make substantial savings is unlocked whether the objective is to reduce call costs, simplify the overall management of both voice and data or capitalise on the latest multimedia application.
3 Sharing capacity in a fixed Wide Area Network for Voice (IP Trunking) The INDeX IP Networking cassette allows the use of the data Wide Area Network to make desk to desk voice calls between INDeXs. Since leased lines typically have a fixed cost, voice traffic essentially travels for free courtesy of data. The IPNC uses voice compression technology to make the most of the available space. Using industry standard compression (G and G.729a), up to 20 voice calls can be made simultaneously. There are two methods of implementing this type of solution, connecting the leased line directly to the INDeX or by using existing leased line routers. Connecting the leased line directly to the INDeX is by far the simplest and safest solution. In this scenario the IPNC will take IP data from the LAN and combine it with INDeX voice traffic for delivery over the leased line. Each leased line can operate at speeds of upto 2Mbps. Another advantage of directly connecting to the INDeX comes from its support of Frame Relay. Since leased lines are normally charged per end and Frame Relay only requires a single end per site, the number of leased lines needed can be rationalised, offering substantial savings in the Wide Area Network. When use in conjunction with existing leased line routers the IPNC will pass INDeX voice traffic onto the Local Area Network to be transmitted by the external router. However, in this scenario quality of service must be carefully considered, all equipment involved in the passing of the voice traffic must support the Difserv quality of service standard or unpredictable results may be encountered. Note: The recommended solution when using voice leased lines or ISDN circuits is to make use of the Voice Compression Cassette (see Voice Compression) Supporting IP extensions in the Local Area Network IP extensions are telephony devices that connect to the PABX through the Local Area Network using IP. They range from simple IP telephones to full multimedia applications such as Microsoft Netmeeting TM supporting voice, video and collaborative working services. The IPNC supports the H.323 standard that allows these devices to make and receive calls via the LAN to INDeX handsets and the outside world. Through INDeX it is possible to introduce LAN connected multimedia stations in key locations whilst keeping mission critical staff in a traditional telephony environment. As with IP trunking the IPNC will prioritise IP packets carrying this time sensitive data. However, it is important to remember that all other devices on the LAN that are involved i.e. switches and routers, must support the Difserv Quality of Service standard.
