5 Overview The ET10A Network Bridge is a high performance, remote, selflearning Ethernet bridge. Its compact size and low cost make it ideal for cost-sensitive bridging applications, or as a LAN extender or segmenter over bit stream type infrastructures. The built-in N x 64K/ N x 56K timing clock generator makes it easy to connect with other N x 64K / N x 56K related data equipment. Several selectable data interfaces, including V.35, RS-530, RS-449, X.21, and RS-232, make this Ethernet Bridge 's connection between 10Base-T LAN and various SYNC or ASYNC data port interfaces convenient. 9 (1) Protocol Switch: When this switch is set to the SYNC position, the ET10A is set to HDLC Sync mode; when it is set to the ASYNC position, the ET10A is set to RFC 1662 HDLC-like framing PPP mode. (2) Power LED: Green, when external power adapter is plugged in and power switch is turned on, the ET10A will work and this LED will light for power on indication. (3) DC 9V/IN: This jack receives power from the external DC 9V AC power adapter. (4) Power Switch: When depressed, this pushbutton switch will supply power to the internal circuits from the AC power adapter. (5) Collision LED: Red, indicates a collision has occurred on the LAN. (6) Error LED: Red, indicates an error has occurred in ET10A, for instance a buffer overrun or underrun. (7) Cross Over Switch: When this pushbutton switch is pressed, the LAN port of the ET10A can connect to a PC directly; when released, the LAN port of ET10A can connect to a HUB directly. (8) RJ-45 Ethernet LAN Port: Connection to the Ethernet LAN is made here. (9) SW1: Configuration setting for the bridge. (Please refer to DIP SW setting table.) (10) SW2: Configuration setting for the bridge. (Please refer to DIP SW setting table.) (11) LAN Tx LED: Green, indicates that the LAN is transmitting. 5

(14) WAN Tx LED: Green, indicates that transmission of data is taking place over the link. (15) WAN Rx LED: Green, indicates that data is being received from the link. (16) WAN port: This DB25 male connector is for the WAN connection. The ET10A performs in DTE mode and its WAN port connector may be connected to a DCE device (such as a modem) directly. 6

In this configuration, the ET10A acts as a repeater. When the filter is enabled, frame destinations are tested against the internal MAC address table. Filtering enabled is the normal selection for Bridging. Compression: Enhances Tinygram Compression increases data throughput. Valid Ethernet frames have a minimum length of 64 bytes. Frames shorter than 64 bytes are padded. With compression enable, these padding bytes are stripped off before being transmitted over the WAN, and re-padded when received on the other side. ACCM (only valid in Async mode): When ACCM is enabled, the first 32 characters in asynchronous mode are transmitted as a two octet sequence consisting of the control escape octet 0x7d, followed by the original octet with its sixth bit complemented. Otherwise, the characters are transmitted as is.

Setting the ET10A s X.21 clock mode to internal is not recommended. APPLICATIONS In the following example, the ET10A is configured for bridging over an E1 (or T1) carrier provider s network. The ET10A s interface is set to V.35 to match the CSU/DSU unit and protocol is set to SYNC. The CSU/DSU may be set unframed or may be set to use a fraction (n x 56 or n x 64) of the E1 (or T1) line. The CSU/DSU timing is received from the carrier provider s network so they both should both be set to recovery. The Tx and Rx clocks for both ET10A s should be set to external. 24 APPLICATIONS In the next example, the ET10A is setup to bridge over a PSTN s leased line. The ET10As are set to SYNC protocol, while the Speed settings depend upon the speed of the leased line and the settings of the modems. The timing scheme recommended is this application is for the Tx and Rx Clocks of each unit to be set to External while the clocks of the modems are set to Internal for both or Internal for one and Loop for the other. Figure 4: Bridging over Synchronous leased line. In this example, the ET10A is used for LAN extension in asynchronous mode. Maximum speed setting is 115.2Kbps, but depends upon the type of modem and distance between them. If filtering is disabled, the ET10A s act as repeaters. If the LAN traffic is to be segmented, the filter should be enabled (bridging mode). Figure 5: ET10A in a LAN extension application 20

25 APPLICATIONS In the following example, the ET10A is paired with a G703/64K interface converter to provide connection over G Kbps services. If the G.703 transmit and receive clocks are provided by the central carrier, each G703/64K converter will be set to centradirectional line code.
