5 Gould Road, PO Box 2155 New London, NH USA Voice: (603) Using the Lantronix SGX 5150 Serial Device Server Application Note #28 - Revision 12/2018 Overview The Lantronix industrial wireless device serial servers and Ethernet Bridge/Routers are built for networking equipment in an array of machine-to-machine (M2M) applications. The SGX 5150 features an industrial strength enclosure and operates over a wide temperature range (-40 to 70 C) to withstand challenging M2M environments. Dual port design allows connection of up to 2 devices. Dual-band WiFi supports both 2.4GHz and 5GHz networking. Security features include wireless security; network security; and device security (multi-level encryption capability to protect configuration data). This Application Note details the configuration steps necessary to use the Lantronix SGX 5150 Device Server with several Campbell Scientific dataloggers including the CR2XX, CR3XX, CR800, CR1000 and CR6 and the Canary Systems MLGPS module. Definitions Ad-Hoc Network: An ad-hoc network is one of the two types of wireless networks (the other is "Infrastructure") and is not very common. Ad-hoc networks do not require a wireless network access point and are considered "de-centralized". Ad-hoc networks are convenient to allow devices and/or PC's to communicate with each other in the absence of a centralized network. DHCP: Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP) is a mechanism used in computer networks to assign IP addresses automatically. Infrastructure Network: An infrastructure network is one of the two types of wireless networks (the other is "Ad-Hoc") and is the most common. Infrastructure networks require a wireless network access point to manage and forward traffic to and from the wireless network. SSID: Service Set Identifier (SSID) is the unique identifier for a wireless network, either infrastructure or adhoc. The SSID is used to configure each device or PC to select the wireless network that you want it to communicate on. Wireless Network Access Point (AP): A wireless network access point is a WiFi router that is used to setup a wireless network. Access Points support "Infrastructure" networks as opposed to "Ad-Hoc" networks. The AP is responsible for forwarding network to and from connected wireless devices and PC's. Serial Interface: Typically, the dataloggers are connected to one of the serial interface connectors on the Lantronix SGX The serial interface port support baud rates up to 921.6Kbps and RS-232 or Multiprotocol RS-232/422/485. The default serial port settings are 9600 baud, No parity, 8 data bits, 1 stop bit and no flow control. Using the Lantronix SGX 5150 Serial Device Server 1
Required Equipment and Software To configure your SGX 5150 and test its operation you need: 1. SGX 5150 Serial Device Server (normally installed in the datalogger enclosure) 2. A USB to Serial Adapter, Lantronix Serial Port adapter cable 3. Computer with a WiFi network adapter (most laptops have built in WiFi and USB WiFi adapters are readily available to add WiFi capability to a desktop) 4. Datalogger (normally installed in the datalogger enclosure) Note The datalogger system should have the serial cable which connects the SGX 5150 serial port to the datalogger serial port already installed. SGX 5150 Connections (Figure 1 - Front view of the Lantronix SGX 5150) (Figure 2 - Rear view of the Lantronix SGX 5150) Note - Serial 1 and Serial 2 are sometimes referred to as Line 1 and Line 2 by Lantronix. Configuring the SGX 5150 This Application Note describes how to configure the SGX 5150 to operate in an infrastructure network. It does not cover configuring for an ad-hoc network. Using the Lantronix SGX 5150 Serial Device Server 2
Gather information about your wireless network Before you can configure the SGX 5150 you need to understand the wireless network that you are connecting the SGX 5150 to. Work with your systems administrator to obtain this information, specifically: IP ADDRESS nnn.nnn.nnn.nnn Assigned by your IT Department SUBNET MASK nnn.nnn.nnn.0 Typically SSID Example: MyNetworkName Created by your IT Department Passphrase Example: Secretphrase Created by your IT Department Default Gateway nnn.nnn.nnn.nnn Assigned by your IT Department (Table 1 - Note: n can be any digit 0 to 9) Note The SGX 5150 does include support for DHCP but it is NOT recommended to use this as IP addresses can be re-assigned which will require MultiLogger configuration to be updated. Names can be assigned to an IP address, and MultiLogger does support name resolution of IP addresses, however this requires additional configuration that is beyond the scope of this Application Note. Configuration over a Serial Port The following steps are for configuration of the SGX 5150 over the serial port. This configuration method does not require extra software or network access. If you have access to the network you want to configure for, please see Appendix D for an alternative method. 1. In order to start the configuration, first set SGX 5150 to Factory Defaults; See Appendix A. 2. Turn off power to the SGX Open the terminal program HyperTerminal (or similar program like PuTTY) and set serial communications to: (9600, 8, N, 1, No Flow) Baud rate: 9600 Data bits: 8 Parity bit: None Stop bit: 1 Flow control: None 4. Set your terminal program to the proper COM port (Check Device Manager). 5. Connect the USB-Serial Adapter to a Null-Modem cable. Plug the Serial Cable adapter into Serial 2 (use Serial 1 if configuring for an MLGPS) on the SGX 5150 and the DB-9 end to the Null- Modem cable. 6. In the terminal window, Hold down the! key (shift + 1). 7. Turn on the power to the SGX Keep holding the! key for about 10 seconds until a! character appears in the terminal window. 9. Release the! key and type xyz within 5 seconds. 10. The SGX 5150 prompt should appear in the window: (Figure 3 - Terminal Window) Using the Lantronix SGX 5150 Serial Device Server 3
Enter the commands as shown below. Black text is the command prompt. The red text indicates commands you enter. Blue text indicates command responses from the SXG For brevity, not all SGX 5150 responses are shown. Using the Lantronix SGX 5150 Serial Device Server 4
Testing SGX 5150 Configuration To test the operation of the Serial Device Server with a CR300 (or similar) Control Module, open MultiLogger and update the IP:Port configuration for the new device, CR300 example shown below. Connect the datalogger s Serial Port to Line 1 on the SGX Note Be sure to use the settings utilized with your infrastructure. The ports for the Serial Ports are as follows: Serial Port 1: (Serial Port 1 is Line 1 on the SGX 5150) Serial Port 2: (Serial Port 2 is Line 2 on the SGX 5150) Press Save in MultiLogger when settings are updated. (Figure 4) Double-click the node, CR300_1 in the example above, or select it and press the Logger button, to open the Logger form. Using the Lantronix SGX 5150 Serial Device Server 5
Press the Monitor button on the Logger toolbar to start the Monitor mode. This initiates a socket connection to the device and attempts to start the Monitor mode. If successful, the Datalogger Clock starts updating to indicate successful communication. Appendix (Figure 5) Appendix A SGX 5150 Reset To reset the SGX 5150 and restore the manufacturer default settings: Press the Reset button as shown in the figure below for 6 seconds.
