Voice Video Data Consistent, Reliable, Predictable Performance Business Policy Switch 2000 Quality of Service designates that a particular architecture delivers availability, reliability, performance and predictability. Quality of Service and Class of Service cannot be exclusive of one another. Quality of Service is a measurement of how well a network performs, and it includes categorizing a particular connection or flow. Class of Service has a more granular definition: It implies the categorization of services into distinct classes that can be treated individually, relative to each other.

By classifying, prioritizing, policing and marking (DiffServ Code Point / TOS Byte) LAN IP traffic, SMB networks can offer reliable connectivity and required bandwidth for mission-critical applications like IP telephony, to specific groups and users, and to individual devices such as e-commerce servers. The Business Policy Switch acts as the stackable Ethernet edge or closet element in conjunction with the Passport* routing switches in the network core, complements the Policy Enabled Networks* line of products from Nortel Networks, and delivers end-to-end QoS. To further protect your network investment, flexible, high-speed LinkSafe* up-link options (gigabit Ethernet/fast Ethernet/fiber) allow for connections to Passport routing switches, other high-speed switches, or the network center. For each of these applications, advanced QoS features support IETF standard DiffServ QoS architecture, packet classification based on the contents of packet header fields (voice, video, data), traffic policing, and remote sniffing. As a result, optimal network performance and reliability may be attained while realizing significant cost savings. Customized service type and flow-based administrations through traffic shaping and policing may also be established, providing an opportunity for customer-specific service offerings, which can be implemented to addressspecific and unique customer requirements. Superior Network Availability The Business Policy Switch provides network availability for mission-critical applications, devices, and users. This is done by classifying, prioritizing, policing and marking LAN IP traffic using four hardware-based IP service class queues on a per-port basis based on the following parameters: priority 802.1p header TOS/DiffServ byte Source/Destination MAC address IP SA/DA or subnet TCP/UDP source/destination port Ingress port number IP protocol ID (TCP, UDP, IGMP) L3 protocols VLAN ID Business Policy Switch

4 Figure 4: Flexible QoS Management The QoS policies can be configured via the Business Policy Switch built-in web-based Management tools to facilitate QoS; or alternatively, Optivity* Policy Server can be utilized for dynamic end-to-end enterprise-wide policy and QoS management, which is facilitated through the Business Policy Switch Common Open Policy Support (COPS) client. Simple to advanced configuration options provide network resilience and advanced management with redundant MultiLink Trunking, Remote Monitoring (RMON) on every port, Device Manager, Virtual Local Area Network (VLAN) Manager, web-based management and complete integration into Optivity Network Management software. Management tools provide summary, configuration, fault, statistics, applications, real-time statistics sampling and administration for Business Policy Switch, stack or hybrid stack via a single IP Address. Business Policy Switch 2000 Stackable and Fail-Safe The Business Policy Switch can be deployed as a stand-alone desktop switch, in a Business Policy Switch-only stack, or in a mixed Business Policy Switch/ BayStack 450 stack (backwards compatible with BayStack 450/410). It has been designed with a redundant cascade stacking architecture (Figure 5) to connect up to eight Business Policy Switches (224-10/100 ports) in a self-healing configuration that protects the stack from a single point of failure. Each element can translate the overall corporate policies set in the policy server and influence and police IP traffic on a per flow and per node basis. This allows network managers to make the network as consistent and predictable as possible. With the advanced QoS configuration capabilities, network managers can set average and peak allowed rates.
