High port density means that a single VOL-5000 containing eight slots can support up to 64 Fast Ethernet ports or 8 Gigabit Ethernet ports. For higher port density, three VOL-5000 switches can be stacked together using the VOL-4100-S stacking modules. The VOL-5000 s modular capabilities allow a multitude of possible configurations consisting of Ethernet, Fast Ethernet, and Gigabit Ethernet. Apart from the VOL-5000 s modular capabilities, the VOL-5000 switch is fully manageable via embedded SNMP or Web Java based management technology. 3Innovation

2 INTERFACES An important aspect of integrating an Ethernet switch in the LAN is that the switch conforms to the LAN and not the LAN to the switch. The VOL-5000 s modularity ensures a multiple of interface configurations, which offers flexibility in most LANs. The modules that plug into the switch are available at speeds of 10Mbps, 100Mbps and 1000Mbps (gigabit). The connector interfaces available are VF-45 TM, RJ45 and SC. This ensures connectivity to existing infrastructure or hardware. In addition, a VDSL module is available. 8 Port 100BaseFX module MODULARITY The Volition modular switch allows the user to customize the unit to fit the port density needs as well as interface type. In addition, if higher port density is needed for a single configuration, three VOL-5000 s can be stacked together yielding up to 160 Ethernet or Fast Ethernet ports or up to 20 Gigabit Ethernet ports. ADDITIONAL FEATURES The VOL-5000 offers many standard features, such as line trunking, IEEE 802.1q VLAN, IEEE 802.1d Spanning Tree Algorithm, IEEE 802.3x Flow Control and Backpressure and IEEE 802.1p Class of Service. Optional redundant power supply and all VOL-5000s can be upgraded to Layer 3 IP switching in the field. Line Trunking helps broaden the bandwidth between different switches to help circumvent possible network bottlenecks. For implementing a VLAN across a network, the VOL-5000 supports the full range (4k) of VLANs according to the IEEE 802.1q standard. The VLAN feature allows the switch to be part of a VLAN with other switches supporting the 802.1q standard.

3 MANAGEMENT Front panel LED indicators provide switch and port status information. The SMTP client integrated service provides alarm and trap notification via . With RMON MIB support (four groups), extensive analysis of the switch is available. The VOL-5000 offers additional monitoring and diagnostic capabilities via port mirroring. Any one port may be mirrored allowing for detailed traffic analysis. Using a standard web browser, Java based user-friendly management of switch configuration, port counters, fault detection and performance can easily be monitored remotely. Remote management is possible through the optional out-of-band SLIP protocol. Field upgrade Layer 3 IP switching software is available and may be installed as needed. Layer 3 IP switching software upgrade enables the switch to route packets defined by Layer 3 protocols, such as IP. IP switching enables the establishment of direct communication paths between clients and servers on different subnets. The network traffic does not have to be processed directly through a router.
