1 Background: AllStar and EchoLink node Operation Procedure For the RMRL Eldorado Mountain MHz repeater The AllStar linking system is a VoIP (voice over internet protocol) system based off of asterisk. Asterisk is a professional open-source system, which many companies use for telephone services, and offers excellent audio quality over the network. AllStar is a branch off of asterisk designated for radio amateurs. Similar to IRLP, nodes can connect to each other using DTMF commands. The difference is more capability; each all-star node is sort of like an IRLP reflector, in which it can connect to many nodes at once until the wireless bandwidth is at a limit. AllStar provides excellent communications through amateur radio and the network. Visit allstarlink.org for more information. Node The MHz repeater requires a Hz sub-audible access tone and is located a few miles southwest of Boulder at an elevation of 8,300 feet. It now has an EchoLink and AllStar node linked up to it. Before using the system, identify and state what you will be doing. AllStar node EchoLink node KDØWHB-L EchoLink node # Commands Due to the multiple VoIP modes and the fact that several nodes can be connected and disconnected, there is not a simple DTMF connect and disconnect command. Here is the list of important DTMF commands when using the system. WARNING: Do NOT connect a bunch of large nodes together without

2 permission. *3 <node number> Connect to an AllStar node number. Ex. * connect to AllStar node (Willem AC0KQ on saddleback mountain, CO). To add more nodes to the connection, just continue the sequence. *1 <node number> Disconnect an AllStar node number. If you dialed a bunch of nodes, but only want to disconnect one, use this command. *33<node number> Connect to an EchoLink node number. You will need to look up the node Number, not call sign for this to work. IMPORTANT NOTICE: Node numbers must always be 6 digits long. If the node number is 5 or 4 digits long, 1 or 2 zeros will NEED to be placed before the node number for it to work. For example, to connect to the EchoLink test server, dial * *13<node number> Disconnect an EchoLink node number. For example, a disconnect from the EchoLink test server would require the commands * *2<node number> Connect to a node in Monitor mode (receive only). The node will not hear any transmissions of yours, but you will hear everything from the node (use with caution). *71 Probably one of the most important commands, this will disconnect all links (AllStar or Echo) *70 Local connection status (Will announce what nodes are connected to you) *73 System wide status (Will announce system wide nodes connected, be cautious with this command when connected to large networks).

3 *74 Reconnect all links (Ex. If you perform *71, and want to reconnect all of the links that were disconnected) *30 Reconnect the last link, which you were disconnected from. *81 Speak the Time. *821 Enable Parrot mode (For testing), which will repeat what you say to it back. *822 Disable Parrot mode *92 Connect to a random AllStar node *93 Disconnect from the random AllStar node *94 Connect to random EchoLink node *95 Disconnect from random EchoLink node Important: The node dials DTMF commands to the repeater to turn off the sub-audible CTCSS tones during the hang times and beep (as well as announcements and ID s) If anybody remotely reports ID s, beeps, or announcements coming through the node remotely, something did not get dialed right on connect. DIAL THE COMMAND 4 * with your DTMF touch-tones. After dialing out, make sure you Key Your Transmitter, Pause a second or so, then start talking. Due to the Internet connection, and lag the node may take some time before the other user can actually hear you. Wait until you hear the short, single courtesy beep from a non-local station

4 before you transmit back, that way you don t double with the node. Have fun, and I hope the new Allstar/Echolink node brought to the RMRL repeater gets good use!
