4 Internet2 Network Progress Community Design Workshop Held June in Indianapolis Over 100 attendees Representatives from RONs, institutions, national networks, researchers Goals: Provide greater detail about new network Gather feedback

7 Internet2 Network Progress Community Design Workshop First day: Services Discussion Covered: Potential research / production services and network usage policies for the new network Feedback: 500 Mbps commodity no longer bundled in with connection fee NTAC group formed to provide input on services National content exchange fabric discussed and beta trial plans formalized Other services (VoIP, IPTV, etc.) shouldn t be allowed to distract from progress deploying network Network access policies should be simple and easy to implement

9 Internet2 Network Progress Community Design Workshop Second day: Breakout sessions Covered: Discussions to finalize node locations Feedback: Site locations clarified and alternate connections identified Allow for longer transition period to 2x10GE connection model Also Technical Advisory Group discussion and feedback: Hierarchical structure (similar to MACE) considered Advisory Group would create Working Groups to address technical issues (Paul Schopis would lead initial formation) Executive committee with Level3, Internet2, Infinera, ESnet and other partners created

12 Internet2 Network Progress Follow-on Connector Calls Internet2 staff conducted multiple calls / meetings with connectors representing 44 indiv. router connections and key participants Goals: Better understand needs of connectors relative to their business models for services Discuss details related to transition to new network Provide means for connector input on the Internet2 network and organization

13 Internet2 Network Progress Follow-on Connector Calls Recurring themes: Connection speed and cost models Allow slower migration to 2x10G Demand for wave services Low demand for dynamic services but there was demand for static waves Internet2 should take lead in developing new dynamic services with input from researchers on applications Strong desire for more personal contact with Internet2

14 Internet2 Network Progress Follow-on Connector Calls Themes cont d: Connector issues Work with regionals and avoid going around them Lack of free backhaul an issue There will be difficulties faced by those smaller connectors wishing to stay independent Commodity / peering services Strong interest in these services savings could be used to offset increased connector costs Insisted that Internet2 ensure services didn t undermine the good work the Quilt has done
