2010 openpdc Releases See for more info. January 2010 (Version 1.0) The first, fully tested openpdc release. Based on the TVA SuperPDC (a Visual Basic system) the openpdc was reengineered and converted to the more robust C# language. June 2010 (Version (1.1) The June release included numerous additions to the configuration system including wizards for setting up data bases and configuring the openpdc as well as security and performance monitoring improvements (see attached) August 2010 (Version 1.2) The web-based configuration tool was replaced with a faster, easier to configure windows-forms configuration system. Installation time for the openpdc and the openpdc Manager was reduced to less than 5 minutes. (see attached) October 2010 (Version 1.3) This release included tools to streamline the management of PMU configuration data in the openpdc. (see attached) Next production release: January 2011 Nightly build is always available for testing new features. 19 NYISO Vendor Workshop
GPA OpenPDC Services GPA provides open and free support. The openpdc web site is used for logging problems and improvement suggestions. GPA also offers additional services under a range of business arrangements for: Installation Maintenance Customization 20 NYISO Vendor Workshop
Customization Examples By GPA -- The magic A/B switch being added to the openpdc to select the best value in phasor data systems that incorporate redundancy. By Users Quick demonstration of a openpdc adapter 21 NYISO Vendor Workshop
PMU Registry 22 NYISO Vendor Workshop
What is the PMU Registry? The NASPI PMU Registry is the source of meta data on synchrophasor devices and the measurements collected by them throughout North America. Where is the measurement taken? What is the measurement? Who owns the measurement? and for gateways, where can I get it? 23 NYISO Vendor Workshop
PMU Registry Objectives To be the one-stop-shop for information on PMUs in North America (vis-à-vis NERC ISN data definitions) To establish uniform naming conventions for PMUs and their measurement descriptors to facilitate the exchange of PMU data for analysis and display To set the stage for NASPInet to provide a measurement point name server. To support federal SGIG and industry investments in PMUs through collection and tracking of data on PMU equipment The registry software is being developed by NERC to serve all PMU owners across North America 24 NYISO Vendor Workshop
PMU Registry Overview Simple Data Hierarchy Regional concentration Corporate (TO) concentration PMU Measurement Descriptors Allows for multiple layers of data concentration and creation of virtual measurements Allows PMUs that do not provide data to external users to be a part of the registry Creates standard names for PMUs as well as measurement descriptors. The PMU Registry only holds meta data about configuration. 25 NYISO Vendor Workshop
Registry Data Elements PMU / PDC Physical Location Device Info Vendor, Protocol Operational Status Measurement Descriptors Phase Measured Units Reasonability Limits Network Element Electrical One-Line Location 26 NYISO Vendor Workshop
Registry Deployment Paths For tracking SGIG PMU deployment there is a single site: For registry deployment related to phasor gateways, many ISO are setting up their own internal databases and synchronizing with other systems much the way DNS works on the Internet today. 27 NYISO Vendor Workshop
A Wizard Simplifies Data Entry Upload a file 28 NYISO Vendor Workshop
Documentation Compiled Executable Source Code 29 NYISO Vendor Workshop

Setting the stage for NASPInet To publish a signal on NASPInet, an entity must: Have a NASPInet Phasor Gateway Register the measurement (signal) with the NASPInet infrastructure. Configure the Phasor Gateway to designate the authorized receiving Gateways (this configuration can be all ) for this signal. To subscribe to a signal on NASPInet, an entity must: Have a NASPInet Phasor Gateway Discover the measurement (signal) needed through the NASPInet infrastructure Request authorization to receive this signal from the publishing Phasor Gateway owner. 32 NYISO Vendor Workshop

Current State of BES Data Exchange is Complex 40 NYISO Vendor Workshop
Current State of BES Data Exchange is Complex Multiple Regulated Business Processes Many entities Multiple protocols Piecewise development of supplemental information systems using the internet for transport 41 NYISO Vendor Workshop
and complexity is increasing Phasors moving beyond R&D SGIG has resulted in ~$300M in phasor system investments Over 850 new PMUs (6x the current installed base) and 10 new synchrophasor data hubs in the US. Application of phasor data is improving for situational awareness, event detection, system analysis, planning, and automated control. 42 NYISO Vendor Workshop
However, R&D paved the way Phasor measurement units (PMUs) are becoming a more mature technology. Protocols to efficiently bring phasor data to the control center have been standardized. Phasor Data Concentrators are commercially available for use in both Control Centers and Substations. The vision for phasor data exchange has been established by NASPInet. 43 NYISO Vendor Workshop
