2 DAMA SDR SYSTEM DAMA SOFTWARE- DEFINED RADIO SATELLITE COMMUNICATIONS SYSTEM At last secure communications and mobility come together Introduction Nowadays two of the most important trends within the telecommunications users community are secure communications and mobility. Indra s satellite communications system is designed to bring together both requirements by means of using advanced and proven technology. The use of real time configurable SCPC, SCPC DVB-S2, DS-SCPC, FH-SCPC (STANAG 4606) and CDMA (STANAG 4708) waveforms allows both to use small antennas suitable for mobile terminals, as well as providing a robust and difficult to intercept modulation. Services available are voice, data (IP) and SMS-like messaging. DAMA SDR SYSTEM
3 Highlights Software-radio modems, with different waveforms, provides a secure access to the satellite offering the highest degree of resistance to jamming and eavesdropping Very low spectrum density, for easier frequency coordination when using small terminals Asymmetrical and bidirectional communications Several type of terminals: mobile, fixed, multichannel and portable. All of them with real software-radio solution that provides a single and flexible platform DAMA, PAMA and BoD resource management Fully automated system Improved X-band front-end enables enhanced transmission capabilities, and COTS ku-band front ends allow terminals to operate in military or civilian satellites in any theatre of operations Mobile communications feasibility when in conjunction with satellite tracking antennas System overview The network is a fully-automated Demand Assigned Multiple Access (DAMA) multistar and multibeam system that provides a very efficient use of the highly valued space segment. This DAMA network is designed to provide personal communications utilising either fixed, portable or mobile remote terminals. The DAMA access scheme is complemented with four waveforms: SCPC, DSSCPC, FH- SCPC and CDMA. The network also supports Permanently Assigned Multiple Access (PAMA) and Bandwidth on Deman (BoD) access schemes. The system is composed by three types of elements: the Network Management Station (NMS), Gateway Hub Earth Stations (GHES) and terminals. Station is provided with a system performance statistic module which allows to get a good overview of the system as well as quick identify possible faults. Remote terminal bandwidth can be programmed from the station in order to organize resources in a efficient way attending to user time requirements. Station elements and remote terminals are provided with a SNMP agent which allows an easy and quick integration with other user monitoring and control systems. Service Voice Data Function Vocoder Data Rate BER Echo cancellation BER Interfaces: Narrowband (NB) Broadband (BB) Data services: IP connection (PPP), NB IP connection (PPP), BB Characteristics UIT-T G kbit/s < 10E-3 G MT-9122 < 10E-6 RS232C / IP Serial synchronous 4.4 to 169 kbps 28.6 kbps to 3 Mbps SMS Store and forward Not connection-oriented service Simultaneous with voice or data connections Compatible external GSM networks through SMPP SPACE
4 Product family The system provides two-way communications between terminals and a GHES. The NMS manages the proper operation of the network, whereas the GHES acts as a gateway between the satellite network and external networks (e.g. POTS or Internet). In this way, from any terminal users can also communicate with external networks. Many GHES can be used, and they do not need to be at the same location of the NMS. Different types of terminals are available, depending on the application (small terminal narrowband, fixed broadband, mobile ). The system support all of them at the same time with just one NMS. Remote terminals The design of the remote communications terminal developed by Indra is built around the most advanced concept of efficient military and civilian satellite communications networks. Non-fixed remote terminals provide great versatility and coverage, given the ease of transportation and deployment as well as the possibility of operating in remote locations. Thanks to its low consumption, and to the universal power supply and solar panel-rechargeable batteries the terminal can be fully autonomous. The system can work in L-, X- or Ku-band, for greater flexibility, supporting both mobile or fixed satellite communications depending on remote terminal type. Terminals are built using the softwaredefined radio (SDR) paradigm, so that it is possible to change the configuration of the modem and adapt it to application-specific customer requirements. Remote terminal configurations FIXED (F) PORTABLE (P) MOBILE (M) Multichannel (MC) Singlechannel (SC) Rack Rack and desktop - Rugged Rack Rack and rugged SPACE
5 Software-defined radio modem The modem is designed based on the software-radio paradigm. Hence different configurations are available without any change of hardware. The waveform is selected through the keyboard and display. SR40 and SR50 can work both as part of a fully automated DAMA network (requires installation of the Network Management System) or setting up point to point links. In both scenarios, the modem can be integrated in existing M&C systems through standard SNMP IP interface. The core of the modem is an advanced signal processing board based on state-of-the-art DSP and FPGA. IF frequency at 70 MHz uses no analog mixing neither at the RX nor TX chains. Additionally, an on-board controller and a powerful network processor allow implementation of advanced networking and general purpose applications. SR40 and SR50 can be configured in both bridge and router modes in order to provide the greatest flexibility when integrated in existing networks. Optional L-band interface and TCP/IP acceleration.
