2 Case Study Parc de Vilgénis College In September 2005, Parc de Vilgénis College, a scientific and technical college in Massy, near Paris, France, underwent a complete network restructure in order to interconnect numerous buildings and provide advanced services to staff and students, including voice and video. Wireless connectivity was also implemented to support roaming network access for laptop users. Allied Telesis was selected to provide the new solution, thanks to their selection of innovative products, and their ability to offer excellence at an affordable price. Today, thanks to the new network solution, pupils and teachers can access Internet and Intranet resources from about 1000 workstations. Customer Requirements Prior to the network restructure, Parc de Vilgénis College's network was a single non-segmented Layer 2 network. They wanted to implement a new scalable network architecture that would meet their needs, both in terms of functionality and security. The college needed to improve the reliability and security of their applications by segmenting their network - a complex project due to the large amount of user diversity, and the site's physical architecture. They required the ability to manage network bandwidth and high-priority traffic to ensure superior performance of critical applications. They also needed centralized management to make it easy to administer the entire system. The college also sought to future-proof their network design to meet their administrative and academic requirements well into the future. The solution With around 1000 workstations, the solution was a Layer 3 network, segmenting their network into Virtual LANs (VLANs) to optimize traffic flows, and in particular to secure administrative data. A major advantage of VLANs is that users can be grouped together according to their need for network access to specific applications, regardless of their actual physical locations. Subdividing the LAN into smaller segments, or VLANs, increases overall reliability, performance, and makes the network easier to maintain. The new network connects all the College's buildings with each other across a high-performance, switched backbone. "We proposed a comprehensive and scalable architecture to meet the requirements of l'espace Numerique de Travail 1.We also had to take into account the issues that can arise in expanding Local Area Networks when voice and video traffic and other services are all used and managed over the same infrastructure. The goal was to offer students the best service at any given time," explains the Allied Telesis Education Project Team. At the core of the new network, an AT-9924SP multilayer Gigabit switch provides wire-speed traffic throughput. It supplies featurerich, resilient switching technology capable of dealing with multicasting (for streaming video), network control, and security. An AT-9424T managed Layer 3 switch provides gigabit connectivity to the College's servers. 1 L'Espace Numerique de Travail is the French education system's virtual office, which connects everyone involved in education. 4 Case Study Parc de Vilgénis College Benefits of the new solution Increased Performance The new solution segments the site using VLANs to manage the large number of departments and services at the College. Routing between VLANs permits these different services to communicate with each other. The sophisticated Quality of Service (QoS) features on the Allied Telesis switches guarantees the priority delivery of advanced applications, like voice and video across the network. Security Significant in any network, security of critical data is very important for Parc de Vilgénis. Staff and students now have the use of appropriate network resources and applications, as Access Control Lists (ACLs) have been implemented to control data and to restrict access as required. High Availability For a busy college running workstations, a resilient network design is essential to avoid unnecessary downtime, as interruptions could have critical consequences for this sensitive school network infrastructure. The new solution uses Rapid Spanning Tree Protocol (RSTP). Rapid Spanning Tree allows redundant links and prevents network loops, which in turn prevents any interruption of network services by allowing traffic to use a backup path if a link failure was to occur. Manageability Administration of a large in-demand network can be greatly reduced with tools that facilitate automation of everyday tasks and centralize monitoring. For the College network, administration - in particular that of active devices - is easily facilitated with Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMPc). This tool, in conjunction with the graphical AlliedView TM - EMS Network Management System, now allows centralized management and monitoring of all Allied Telesis network equipment, as well as other network devices. Network administration has been simplified, as the distribution of IP addresses to workstations on the network is now automated with the use of Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP). Support for the DHCP Relay feature on the Allied Telesis switches allows workstations on all VLANs to access a central DHCP Server. Future proof design The college sought to future-proof their network design to meet their administrative and academic requirements. This was achieved with innovations like integrating voice and video traffic into the network, plus secure wireless access.
