MPLS network built on ROADM based DWDM system using GMPLS signaling PIONIER experiences in GMPLS based next generation optical network and strategy for integration of MPLS based metropolitan academic networks Tomasz Szewczyk (PSNC)
Agenda Background (NewMAN project) DWDM transmission system MPLS network Summary and further work
Background (NewMAN project) Extension of 21 local teleinformatic scientfic networks - NewMAN Extending the amount of equipment (purchase of network equipment) in 21 centers of Metropolitan Area Networks (MANs) in order to ensure and maintain the highest world standards in the scope of network infrastructure dedicated to scientific institutions connected with MANs all over Poland Developing the network infrastructure to facilitate the connecting of subsequent scientific institutions to the MAN Developing the network infrastructure to allow the connected institutions to use higher bandwidth links Increasing the reliability of MANs Research projects Advanced data transmission services for scientific and research community International peerings Virtual Labs MPLS backbone supporting user defined requirements HPC Commodity Internet Flexible DWDM transmission system Bandwidth on demand
Background Metro networks and PIONIER 21 independent Metropolitan Area Networks Routing/traffic policies Hardware platforms Services for local academic and R&D communities 5 HPC centers PIONIER Connecting MANs together International connectivity Services deployment, maintenance and coordination
Background Network upgrade summary MPLS deployment in 21 scientific metropolitan area networks Integrated switching environment advanced MPLS services IP/IPv6 routing New DWDM system 80-lambda colorless, directionless, contensionless Homogeneous optical system in PIONIER network basing on Wavelength Switched Optical Networks GMPLS control plane Optical connections between all POPs (without 3R regeneration) 40G and 100G ready NMS with MPLS services monitoring support MPLS/IP platform Core switches 191 Access switches GE interfaces GE interfaces DWDM platform Nodes 79 ROADMs GE interfaces 404
Agenda Background (NewMAN project) DWDM transmission system MPLS network Summary and further work
DWDM network Overview Adva FSP3000R7 platform Meshed backbone network Colorless, directionless, contentionless ROADMs 35 ROADM nodes 8 2 degree 146 directions GMPLS control plane Any-to-any services 10GE transponders 100G ready and tested Without OEO conversion and 3R regeneration between end-points
DWDM network High Availability technologies (Adva)
DWDM network High Availability options (Adva control plane) Restoration Primary / Working (Control Plane restores primary tunnels) Secondary / Protection (Control Plane restores secondary tunnels) All Connections (Control Plane restores primary and secondary tunnels)
DWDM GMPLS control plane Dynamic lambda provisioning with GMPLS signaling Adva proprietary extension for ROADM equalization request Performs hop by hop equalization on all nodes on the path The equalization may take few minutes (~ 2-3) depending on number of ROADMs in the path Adva specific properties Currently there is no automatic fallback mechanism. The optical path is not re-established after network failure is repaired. This process requires manual request (by operator) Network design Optical channel (lambda) restoration performed manually depending on service requirements and type of network failure (estimated duration time).
Optical channels for reliable Internet access Providing reliable access to Internet for MAN s routers Dante World Service end-point located in Poznan 2 routers 2 redundant links 2 independent channels (lambdas) Primary: Shortest path/latency Backup: Alternative fiber path and resources No DWDM protection and/or restoration required DWDM resources usage similar to protection but additionally provides backup for routers Only BGP policies applied on the routers
