PRODUCTS Family Brochure Your Path for Growth Apollo Optimized Multilayer Transport (OMLT) Product Family Full transport solution from access to core based on a single product line Optimized for the NG WDM, CESR, and NG Packet-OTS market with integrated powerful L0, L1, L2/MPLS, and L3 functionality Transparent aggregation and transport of services over 10G to 100G WDM links Universal OTN/MPLS fabric providing smooth migration from existing to next generation networks Complete reconfigurable solution from access to core using a variety of ROADMs Fully flexible any-card, any service, in any slot cage Your Partner for Growth
Overview The Apollo Optimized Multilayer Transport (OMLT) is a groundbreaking, purpose-built, next-gen modular transport portfolio integrating Layer 0, 1, 2, and Layer 3 technology, providing a strong OAM model equally applicable to circuit and packet traffic, and offering an integrated multilayer management view. Apollo includes a range of platforms that span metro access, edge, and core/regional/long haul requirements. Its state-of-the-art system is optimized for the transition from hybrid networks supporting SDH/SONET, data, and storage services, to pure IP networks over OTN/WDM. Based on modular building blocks and a series of cost-optimized platforms, Apollo gives operators the option to start implementing either a complete optimized multilayer transport solution or only selected building blocks of that solution, on a standalone basis as needed. For instance, the operator can start out only with optical transport or with Carrier Ethernet switch router capabilities, and can add more modular building blocks when and where additional functionality is needed. This can be done without fear of stranding assets, having initial deployment decisions limit future options, or committing to a solution that will be less optimized for one type of traffic in favor of another providing operators with significant future proofing.
Unique Architecture Right Down the Line Apollo supports applications from metro to regional/long haul. The system architecture is one of the most flexible in the market and can be tailored to the requirements of each site and application. For better utilization of network resources, Apollo can be configured as a pure WDM system, Metro OMLT (NG Packet-OTS), Core OMLT, and CESR. These configurations are implemented by using a variety of L1, L2 and L3 switching fabrics, either locally on the I/O cards or centrally. In metro applications, the system can be configured to support a powerful Ethernet Layer 2/MPLS/Layer 3 switching fabric. In metro core and regional/long haul applications, the system supports a robust universal fabric sustaining 1 Tbit, scalable to multitera, ODU cross connect/ethernet Layer 2/MPLS/L3 switching. Any mix of traffic types can be handled, as determined by site requirements. Underlying OTN Technology Apollo is based on Optical Transport Network (OTN) technology, ensuring carrier-grade capabilities and unmatched QoS. The OTN transmission layer provides a converged pathway for legacy SDH/SONET as well as advanced high-capacity Ethernet offerings. Sub-lambda services can transparently be groomed over a single pipe. The universal fabric supports cross connects, from ODU-0 all the way to ODU-4, including ODU-Flex. Each service, Ethernet, SDH/SONET, and storage is kept intact with its overhead and original timing clock, using its own protection scheme according to the customer Service Level Agreement (SLA). Apollo's OTN layer also supports GFEC and EFEC compliance with G.709. The result is an increase in the maximum span length, reducing the need for regeneration (3R) sites, and enabling more ROADM nodes to be deployed along the signal path without 3R regeneration. Apollo incorporates advanced technologies that promote plug-and-play, ease of installation, and fast and simple new service provisioning, thereby reducing OPEX and CAPEX significantly. It includes a variety of state-of-the-art ROADM modules, tunable lasers, an advanced management system, and a GMPLS-based control plane. All these capabilities place Apollo among the most advanced systems in the market. Apollo multiservice architecture
Advanced End-to-End MPLS Apollo enables a wide range of enterprise services, such as MEF-compliant L2 VPN to NG L3 MPLS IP-VPN. With simplified provisioning and SLA management systems, Apollo empowers service providers to easily tailor business networking solutions for any enterprise size or application. Apollo features a field-proven IP/MPLS control plane as well as MPLS-TP. This flexibility allows network engineers to select the optimized signaling method per network domain, according to the specific application and available resources. Signaling Gateway functionality enables full interoperability between dynamically signaled IP/MPLS and statically provisioned MPLS-TP domains. The signaling gateway maintains end-to-end (E2E) transport OAM capabilities across both domains and extends MPLS to the access. Packet switching is available in assorted fabric types, depending on the site location and requirements. It can scale from small capacity over dedicated packet-switching fabrics to multitera over universal fabric types. FE, GbE (electrical or optical), 10 GbE, and 100 GbE non-blocking data cards with full duplex support can be added in the service slots as part of ECI s budget-conscious, pay as-you-grow approach. Integrated MPLS over a metro WDM network
Flexibility Hits the ROADM ROADM is considered the technology of choice for carriers worldwide, adding flexibility and lowering total cost of ownership (TCO) for various network scenarios. Today's operators require flexible capabilities from the access to the core, using cost-effective ROADMs for each segment. Apollo provides these capabilities based on a variety of photonic modules and ROADMs with best-in-class WSS ROADM technology, fully tunable lasers, and power equalization capabilities. Apollo introduces truly agile optical networking, providing wavelength connectivity with up to 100 Gbps each, in ring or mesh topologies, at 100 GHz (44-channel) and native 50 GHz (88-channel) spacing. The ROADM can be configured to support colorless/directionless/contentionless methods yielding improved flexibility. A variety of amplifiers, ROADMs (such as 2D-ROADM and multidegree ROADM), Tunable Filter Array, and passive filters are available for the different network segment requirements. End-to-end packet-optical solution
Advanced Control Plane The Apollo product family offers Automatic and Wavelength Switched Optical Network (ASON/WSON) control plane architecture, capable of offering intelligent services in transport networks. This is achieved by supplying a GMPLS control plane that enhances Apollo networks, adding restoration to the sub-50 msec protection schemes and automated service provisioning. It further boosts network capabilities, contributing to reduced CAPEX and OPEX. Control plane capabilities add a valuable level of protection and restoration features to Apollo platforms. This goes beyond the simple protection provided by backup fibers in case of fiber cuts affecting multiple links. Control plane restoration capabilities reduce the capacity that must be held in reserve for protection purposes. At the same time service providers can offer varied levels of service restoration for different services. Key components of the Apollo management and control suite include automatic topology discovery, resource dissemination, point-and-click connection provisioning, automatic user-initiated setup, E2E performance management across the OTN layer, and network-wide E2E path protection and restoration. The distributed dynamic routing capability enables rapid cost-effective creation of new nodes and additional bandwidth without the extensive offline operations usually required. Smart and Simple Management All ECI transmission equipment, including Apollo, is managed by a single network management system (NMS), LightSoft. LightSoft features a unique multidimensional approach to managing today's converged networks. It handles a single physical layer and several logical layers covering Ethernet/MPLS, OTN, SDH/SONET, and optical. It employs a graphical user interface that provides a comprehensive view of the entire network while allowing customization of individual technology-centric views. The network management suite includes comprehensive configuration, fault management, performance monitoring, administration, maintenance, and security tools for all the transport technologies in the network, ensuring efficient resource control, streamlined operation, and high QoS. The user can view all aspects of the network at a glance and fully control all elements. In addition, multiple users can simultaneously configure the network without causing access conflicts.
